Wrexham's Rob McElhenney announces name change after Ryan Reynolds made video
Rob McElhenney is legally changing his name to Rob Mac to avoid constant mispronunciations, saying most people already call him that and it saves time for everyone Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney has addressed his decision to file legal documents to change his name. The It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia star first announced his intention to switch to the shortened moniker of "Rob Mac" back in May. The 48-year-old's surname is often mispronounced to the extent that fellow Wrexham owner Ryan Reynolds wrote a song for his birthday in April 2023 to teach people how to say it. McElhenney's wife and Always Sunny co-star Kaitlin Olson previously said the couple's children were not in favour of the change and suggested she also had concerns. However, it was revealed last week that he had formally lodged legal documents in Los Angeles to press ahead with the move. McElhenney has now shared a video to explain his decision, which he said was due to growing tired of having to explain the pronunciation of his surname. In footage published on his social media accounts, he said: "Yes, I'm shortening my name to Rob Mac. Mostly a stage name, but I digress. Is it kinda douchey? Sure. But the amount of time that I have wasted trying to get people to either spell or say my name correctly, is literally days of my life. Trust me, I added it up. "More importantly, it means thousands of you have had minutes of your life stolen by me, because of my last name, including this one. It's a family name, my grandparents, parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins and I all share it, and I love them and I want to stay connected. "Except, it's not even really our f***ing name. Not only have many generations changed its spelling, the current one was just given to my ancestor by a government official who decided that this was now the spelling." McElhenney added: "Most people already call me Rob Mac anyway. My family knows me and loves me regardless of how many syllables I have, and that's the only thing that I really care about. "Honestly, call me whatever you want. Marion, Jerome, Archibald, Eric, Maurice, Stephanie, Frances, Marvin, Gordon or Sam. But maybe we just keep it simple and try Rob Mac. Let's see how it goes." The standard cost of filing for a name change in California is around £330 ($450). That figure can increase once other charges, such as publicising the notice in a newspaper, obtaining certified copies and updating official documents, are taken into account. Total costs for the whole process can potentially rise to more than £580 ($800) if the application is handled without legal assistance. As well as having a stake in Wrexham, McElhenney also has his own company called More Better Industries. The firm, specialising in film, television, and multimedia company, was launched in 2024. McElhenney was also part-owner of Philadelphia bar known as Mac's Tavern, which announced last week that it was closing after 15 years in business. Rob McElhenney is about to make it easier to pronounce his name
The pronunciation of Rob McElhenney's name has been a source of amusement for a while. So much so, in 2023 his friend and business partner Ryan Reynolds wrote a song joking about it. 'You'll probably f it up, but give it a try. Mack instead of Mick, then Henney does the trick,' McElhenney's wife Kaitlin Olson sang on the song. 'So get the name correct and show the man some damn respect!' Now the 'It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia'star has filed to legally change his name to 'Rob Mac,' according to People. He and Olson, who costar on the sitcom, also own a bar called Mac's Tavern, a nod to his character's name on the show. 'As our business and our storytelling is expanding into other regions of the world and other languages in which my name is even harder to pronounce, I'm just going by Rob Mac,' McElhenney recently told Variety. CNN has reached out to representatives for McElhenney for comment.

Rob McElhenney's Mac's Tavern announces it is set to close
Mac's Tavern, based in Philadelphia, has confirmed via social media that it will soon be closing its doors for good. Since Rob McElhenney - who jointly-owns the venue - became Wrexham AFC co-chairman, it had been known to regularly show Reds matches when they were on. It was a place where Philadelphia Reds - and those who travelled from overseas - could gather to share their love of all things Wrexham. Rob and his wife and fellow It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Kaitlin Olson bought what was previously known as the Skinner's Bar and renamed it Mac's Tavern in homage to his character in that show. The bar itself features in many episodes of the long-running series and also in the Welcome to Wrexham documentary, where Rob and others gathered to watch a Wrexham match live from the venue. But, now it looks like the bar is set to close much to the sadness of many who have visited it down the years. Posting on Facebook this week, the Mac's Tavern team wrote; "To all those who have loved, enjoyed and frequented this establishment for over 15 years, we thank you. "When we opened this bar, our hope was to create a welcoming, down-to-Earth place where people could gather, share stories, laugh a little too loudly and enjoy a drink or two among friends. TOP STORIES TODAY They added; "What we got in return was so much more; a vibrant, loyal, and loving community that made Mac's Tavern feel like home - not just to us and the staff, but to everyone who walked through the doors. "From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for your support over the years. We're proud of what we built, but even more proud of what you made it into. "Though Mac's Tavern may be closing, our gratitude to you will remain open - and overflowing - forever." Rob McElhenney is a joint-owner of Mac's Tavern. (Image: PA) Rob has not yet commented openly on the closure, but the announcement was met by many a gutted customer underneath the tavern's post. Declan Swans guitarist Mark Jones said: "A great bar, sorry to hear you're closing." Rob Williamson said: "So sorry to hear this. Mac's has been a great host venue for our darts team for many years now." John Joseph wrote; "Sad to see you guys go it was always a great atmosphere and amazing food - best of luck on the next venture / chapter." Bridget Delaney said: "Thanks for the memories! Watching the Super Bowl Championship Parade Ceremony back in February was an awesome experience I'll have with me forever." Bob McKee added: "End of an era for sure. Incredible run. Fun place that matched your goals. Glad I got to visit whenever I was back in Philly."
