Eknath Khadse (File Photo) PUNE: Former state minister Eknath Khadse's son-in-law Pranjal Khewalkar and six others, including two women, were arrested after a Pune police team claimed to have busted a house party early on Sunday in a Kharadi studio flat off Pune-Ahmednagar highway where cocaine, marijuana and hookah pots were used along with liquor consumption. Police later took Khewalkar, an MD (medicine) and the husband of Rohini Khadse, who heads the NCP (SP)'s state women's wing, and others to Sassoon hospital for medical tests and then to his bungalow in Hadapsar where searches were carried out as part of an investigation to trace the source of the drugs. "A laptop, three pen drives and a hard disk were among the articles seized from the bungalow," a police officer said. Khewalkar and the others were produced before judicial magistrate first class N S Bari who ordered their custodial remand until Tuesday. In court, prosecutor Priyanka Vengurlekar submitted that police needed seven days of custody to investigate the source of the drugs and to ascertain if an organized gang was involved and if the accused have links to any inter-state drug network. "Two of the accused arrested are habitual offenders as they have cases registered against them in the past" she added. Khewalkar's lawyer Vijaysingh Thombare submitted that the arrest was politically motivated. "There were previous attempts by police in civil clothes to trap my client at two locations, and CCTV footage supports this claim," he said. Lawyer Abid Mulani, representing two other accused, submitted, "Police failed to provide the grounds of arrest to the accused at the time of detention in direct violation of Section 50 of the CrPC, which mandates that the arrested persons be informed of the grounds in such an arrest." Lawyer Sachin Zalte, appearing for Yadav, submitted that police have failed to mention in their arrest report the quantity of cocaine seized. The omission is crucial, as possession of less than two grams qualifies as a bailable offence. The court said the allegations of illegal arrest can be taken up in subsequent hearings.

Residents urge pollution board to regulate construction noise in Kolkata
KOLKATA: Citizens of a residential locality in south Kolkata have written to the state pollution control board, urging it to regulate noise pollution from construction activities, similar to how it successfully controlled construction dust pollution. Among the suggestions provided is the installation of sound suppression barriers at construction sites. In a letter to the PCB chairman Kalyan Rudra, an office bearer of a residents' association at Hindustan Park, a residential neighbourhood near Gariahat that has acquired a commercial character over the past three decades, pointed out that constant high-decibel noise generated at construction sites in the locality is an assault on the senses. "It appears as though our homes have also become construction sites. The noise permeates through the walls, making even conversation challenging," she recounted. While acknowledging that construction activity involving grinding, cutting, polishing, and drilling requires heavy-duty/high-speed machines that produce high-decibel noise far in excess of the permissible limit for residential areas, he suggested using multiple measures to contain the noise and avoid disturbing residents. "There can be reasonable restrictions on timings for construction activities that generate loud noise. Sound mufflers can be used around machines that generate loud noise to prevent the spread of noise. Buffer shields or noise cutters can be installed around the construction site to contain the noise within it," explained Kakkar, who said the issue was relevant not only to Hindustan Park residents but also to those living in other neighbourhoods across Kolkata where old homes were constantly demolished to construct new ones. PCB Chairman Kalyan Rudra, while terming the suggestions constructive, said it would require research and development by an academic institution or institute. "There are specific guidelines on noise in residential areas. We impose the guidelines, but it is for the civic body and police to enforce them. We have given police decibel meters to check infringements and take necessary action. We have already made the transport of construction waste to recycling plants mandatory," he pointed out. Kakkar earlier wrote to Municipal Commissioner Dhaval Jain, pointing out that despite houses in Hindustan Park and other localities in south Kolkata being among the highest taxed under the Unit Area Assessment formula citing better infrastructure, the absence of any monitoring and enforcement of construction activities has resulted in these areas becoming almost unliveable. Woman abandons newborn in delivery ward & flees, baby dies 8 days later
Nagpur: A 30-year-old woman has been charged with culpable homicide for abandoning her critically-ill newborn son two years ago in the delivery ward of Mayo Hospital, which subsequently led to his death eight days later. The investigation, which was in deep freeze since December 8, 2022, was revived after a recent review of pending matters. The woman, Shamim Girjasingh Khan, was admitted to Mayo Hospital's delivery ward on November 30, 2022. She gave birth to a boy on December 1, but mysteriously fled the hospital, leaving her newborn behind. The baffled hospital staff made every effort to save the infant, who was shifted to the neonatal ICU. Dr Vedanti Mahale, who attended to the case, declared the infant dead at 8am on December 8, 2022, after a week of intensive care. The Tehsil police initially registered accidental death under Section 174 of CrPC but failed to pursue the matter and the case languished for two years. Shamim, whose last known address was Ekta Nagar, Gorewada, remained untraceable during this period. Investigations revealed that she knowingly abandoned her critically-ill newborn, fully aware of his fragile condition and the absence of anyone to care for him. The negligence, authorities concluded, directly contributed to the infant's death. On Monday, a case of culpable homicide was registered against Shamim at the Tehsil police station. Senior officials feel the baby could have been born out of wedlock. "Had it been a case of child trafficking, the woman would have sold the baby," said a police official. Senior inspector Shubhangi Deshmukh, who is leading the investigation, said that a team has launched a search for Shamim. "We are actively pursuing leads to trace her and ensure justice in the infant's death. We could not find any information about the woman's kin, which is common in such cases, but her cellphone was found. Data would be extracted from the cellphone to trace the woman soon," said Deshmukh.

Former Liverpool star Robbie Fowler was head coach of East Bengal as the club made its ISL debut in 2020 Panaji: The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has received 170 applications for the national team coach job, significantly lower than the 291 who applied for the same position it advertised last year. The AIFF invited applications on July 4 after accepting Manolo Marquez's resignation at its executive committee meeting on July 2. According to sources, there was a flurry of applications during the first three days, but when AIFF started compiling the list a week later, there weren't too many big names who had applied for the position. 'Last year there was massive interest in the job, many of them (current) national team coaches and those who had managed teams at the FIFA World Cup,' a senior official told TOI on Monday. 'This time around, there's also interest from across the world, but not as many high-profile candidates.' The AIFF has not revealed the list of applicants, but those in the know confirmed several names who have shown interest. Vadodara: Elections for the top two posts in the powerful Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) will be held in Milk City Anand on Tuesday, after a gap of two and a half years. The heads of 18 co-operative milk unions of Gujarat, who are members of the GCMMF board, will elect the new chairman and vice-chairman of the federation, which markets dairy products under the brand name Amul. Currently, the chairman of the Sabarkantha District Co-operative Milk Producers Union Limited (Sabar Dairy), Shamal Patel, and Kutch-based Sarhad Dairy's chairman, Valamji Humbal, are holding the two top posts. The duo, who were elected to these posts in July 2020, have already served two terms of two and a half years each. Observers point out that the recent developments at Himmatnagar, where milk producers linked to Sabar Dairy staged protests which spiralled into violent clashes with the police, have put Sabar Dairy's chief, Shamal Patel, on a sticky wicket. MGTO Undo Since its inception in 1973, GCMMF was headed by its founder chairman, the late Dr Verghese Kurien, who stepped down in 2006. He was the last non-political chairman of the federation. Since 2006, the GCMMF chairmanship has been held by Banaskantha-based Banas Dairy (Parthi Bhatol), Mehsana-based Dudhsagar Dairy (Vipul Chaudhary), Sabarkantha-based Sabar Dairy (earlier Jetha Patel and now Shamal Patel), and Anand-based Amul Dairy (Ramsinh Parmar). Banas, Mehsana, Sabar and Amul are the four biggest milk unions of Gujarat. The post of vice-chairman, which was created in 2015 through an amendment to GCMMF bylaws, was first held by Panchmahals-based Panchamrut Dairy's chief, Jetha Bharwad, and is currently held by Humbal. Anand district collector Praveen Chaudhary told TOI that the election will be held from 11am onwards according to the GCMMF bylaws presented to him. GCMMF has a unique voting pattern where all district dairy union chiefs who are board members have one normal vote each. In addition, they carry additional votes that are counted based on the business that the dairies they head transact with the federation in the financial year. With 3.6 million dairy farmers associated with the 18 milk unions of Gujarat, GCMMF is the world's largest farmer-owned dairy cooperative. Its group brand turnover is more than $11 billion, while it handles more than 12 billion litres of milk every year.
