Apple iPhone 17 Air: Did Apple Just Accidentally Leak A Key Design Detail?

Apple recently released its second developer beta of the next iPhone software, iOS 26. It's what the iPhone 17 series will run on when the handsets are released. But it looks like Apple has given something away about one of the new phones, perhaps by mistake. Has Apple just revealed what the display on the iPhone 17 "Air" will look like? As spotted by Macworld, deep in the code for the latest developer beta is a new version of the popular clownfish iPhone wallpaper. So what, you might say, that's nothing new. Except this one is. The new wallpaper has 'a resolution of '420×912@3x,' or 1260×2736 pixels. There's no iPhone model with such a resolution, at least not yet,' the report pointed out. That's pretty clear that one of the iPhones in development will have this all-new screen size, which ties in perfectly with the reports that have leaked about the super-slim iPhone in development, nicknamed iPhone 17 Air. 'The new resolution wallpaper we found matches a report by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo last year, which claimed that the iPhone 17 Air would have a screen of around 6.6 inches with a resolution of approximately 1260×2740. In other words, the wallpaper all but confirms the existence of a new iPhone model with that exact display resolution. Given that iOS 26 will almost certainly be released in September along with the new iPhones, it's clear that Apple is already making the final adjustments for the next-generation iPhone,' Macworld explained. The publication even suggests the new wallpaper was left in the beta entirely by accident: 'Since other iOS 26 wallpapers don't have that resolution, most likely the wallpaper was forgotten by Apple within the build released today for developers and shouldn't be seen by the public,' it said. Well, the truth is you never know with Apple. Could they have planted it in the beta to get everyone talking? Personally, I adhere to the cock-up theory of history rather than the conspiracy one, but who knows? The Prompt: Get the week's biggest AI news on the buzziest companies and boldest breakthroughs, in your Subscribed! You're Subscribed! If it vanishes when the third beta is released, it may indicate a mistake. Either way, it seems to double down on the belief that the iPhone 17 Air will have a 6.6-inch display, which is good to know.

iPhone 17 Air possibly leaked by the latest iOS 26 beta

Earlier today, Apple released the second iOS 26 beta to developers. In addition to some useful new features and improvements to the controversial Liquid Glass UI, the latest beta seemingly also includes a hint about Apple's rumored iPhone 17 Air. As spotted by Macworld on Monday, iOS 26 beta 2 features an updated version of the original clownfish wallpaper that appeared in Mac OS X. Interestingly, the wallpaper has a resolution of '420×912@3x,' which translates to 1260×2736 pixels. That is pretty close to the resolution of a modern iPhone, but as Macworld points out, Apple has never actually launched an iPhone with the display featuring that exact resolution. Today's Top Deals Best deals: Tech, laptops, TVs, and more sales Best Ring Video Doorbell deals Memorial Day security camera deals: Reolink's unbeatable sale has prices from $29.98 This single leaked detail alone isn't enough to prove anything, but last July, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo published a list of 'currently known specifications for the ultra-thin iPhone 17.' That list included a screen resolution of 'approximately 2,740 x 1,260.' It could be an uncanny coincidence, but that's just 4 pixels off the resolution of the wallpaper in iOS 26 beta 2. Pairing these leaks with the fact that iOS 26 will launch alongside the iPhone 17 lineup this fall, it's hard not to believe that Apple just accidentally confirmed the existence of the iPhone 17 Air a few months early. Assuming that the rest of Kuo's report from 2024 is accurate too, here's what we think we know about Apple's rumored ultra-thin iPhone so far: Display: 6.6-inch screen with a 2736×1260 resolution Processor: A19 chip Camera: Single wide rear camera As for the design, it's obviously going to be incredibly thin (possibly just 5.5mm thick). Rumors also claim the iPhone 17 Air will feature a titanium-aluminum alloy metal frame and a Dynamic Island similar to the iPhone 16 models. iPhone 17 Air seemingly leaked in iOS 26 — here's what we know

Apparent confirmation of the iPhone 17 Air, and part of its display specs, has just been found within the latest beta of iOS 26. Macworld spotted that the newly-available iOS 26 beta 2 includes a new version of Apple's clownfish wallpaper — available since the first iPhone — with a 420x912@3x resolution. Doing the math gives us a total resolution of 1,260 x 2,736. This is different from any current iPhone screen resolution, and — given the rumors — suggest there's only one iPhone coming this year that's different in size from previous generations. It therefore suggests that the rumors of a new, 6.6-inch iPhone 17 Air are accurate. Strengthening this are previous claims the iPhone 17 Air will have a resolution of around 1260 x 2740. That's a few rows of pixels off from the wallpaper size, but close enough to support the general claim of a new iPhone of this size coming soon. While we expect the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max to be direct sequels to the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, the iPhone 17 Air is thought to be tagging in for the iPhone 16 Plus while offering a different mix of features. Measuring 6.6 inches according to the rumors, the iPhone 17 Air will be larger than the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro, but still smaller than the Pro Max model. It'll also only carry one rear camera, rather than two or three. But in return, the iPhone 17 Air's body will supposedly be noticeably lighter and thinner, possibly as slim as 5.5mm (0.22 inches). If you've seen the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge, the iPhone 17 Air should fill a similar role in the iPhone line-up. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. The S25 Edge had to reduce its battery capacity and also lost a camera compared to the regular Galaxy S25 model, but we're hoping that the iPhone 17 Air will be able to still offer a practical battery life thanks to Apple's generally power-efficient hardware. We admit we're a little unsure about Apple offering just a single camera on the back, though. Whatever Apple has to offer the world with the iPhone 17 series this year, we should see the announcements come in the second week of September, as we have most years since the iPhone first launched. We can't imagine it'll specifically address the size of its clownfish wallpaper on stage, but hopefully it'll tell us the same iPhone 17 Air display info by more direct means.

Europe, we're not leaving. Period.

There are some headlines making the rounds claiming that TechCrunch is 'pulling out of Europe' and shuttering its coverage of European startups. This is flat-out wrong. It misrepresents who we are, what we do, and — most of all — what we believe. The recent changes at TechCrunch are not about retreat. They are about realignment and reinforcement. This new chapter is fueled by our partnership with our sister company, Foundry, which was brought under the same ownership to create a tech media entity with unparalleled global scope. To be clear, Foundry is a powerhouse of international technology journalism. Its portfolio includes established and respected brands like PCWorld, Macworld, CIO, and TechAdvisor, with a vast network of journalists and deep-rooted expertise in local and regional tech ecosystems across Europe and the world. The suggestion that our new ownership believes international coverage is unessential is patently false. The entire purpose of bringing TechCrunch and Foundry together is to create a stronger, more globally focused media platform. Why we fight for this beat Europe is where fintech regulation is rewritten, where quantum startups spin out of Max Planck labs, where climate-tech pilots become the standard for the rest of the planet. In 2024 alone, European founders raised over €40 billion; many of the unicorns we covered last year were born on this continent. If you care about the future of technology, you have to be here. And we are. As we integrate the strengths of both TechCrunch and Foundry, here is our promise to the founders, investors, and readers in Europe and beyond: Radical presence. We will be on the ground — from demo days in Tallinn to hydrogen-hub unveilings in the Basque Country — because stories look different up close. When is WWDC25? Here's how to watch Apple's keynote event with the world's tech experts

It's time for Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference, also known as WWDC. The event appears to have some major software updates in store. The company appears set to announce iOS 19 for the iPhone and iPad as well as other software updates, Macworld reports. The announcement of Apple Intelligence features dominated last year's conference, which also included updates to a suite of Apple's operating systems. Here's what to know about WWDC25, including how to watch the global tech event. This year's Apple conference, referred to as WWDC25, will be held Monday, June 9 through Friday, June 13. The week begins with a keynote event at noon CDT, followed by a "Platforms State of the Union." Then developers will choose among over 100 technical sessions for "a chance to dive deep into the latest technologies and frameworks with Apple experts." Groups and one-on-one sessions are scheduled after. Fifty Distinguished Winners of the Swift Student Challenge will also visit Apple Park, the Silicon Valley headquarters. This is the second year of the program, which the company says is "one of many Apple programs that seek to uplift the next generation of entrepreneurs, coders, and designers." The keynote event begins at noon CDT on Monday, June 9, at Apple Park in Cupertino, California. While the majority of the week-long conference is limited to developers, its keynote event will be available to stream. The keynote, which was in-person prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, will include most of the major news and showcase features. You can stream the big event on Apple's website, Apple TV, or the official Apple YouTube channel. — USA TODAY's James Powel contributed to this report.
