MMEA launches full probe into Pulau Perhentian boat tragedy
KUALA BERANG: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) will conduct a thorough investigation into the boat capsize incident in Pulau Perhentian, Besut, which resulted in the deaths of three victims, including two family members. Its director-general, Admiral Maritime Datuk Mohd Rosli Abdullah, said that although the incident was reported to have occurred when the boat carrying 15 passengers was hit by a storm, his department will conduct a thorough investigation, including the boat's licensing, cargo carried, and ensuring all regulations were complied with. "We will conduct an investigation, including contacting the victims involved and carrying out a detailed investigation in various aspects," he said when met by reporters after the launching ceremony of the Madani Adopted Village and Madani Adopted School programme by the People's Volunteer Corps (RELA) 2025 at the grand hall of the Hulu Terengganu District Council here yesterday. The ceremony was officiated by Home Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. Mohd Rosli added that his team always intensifies control and enforcement, especially since tourism activities on the beach and at sea are becoming more vibrant after the Northeast Monsoon season has ended. In the boat incident that happened at 10.30pm on Saturday, S. Arumugam, 40, and daughter A. Sarrvihka, 3, as well as female relative V. Vennpani, 10, died, whereas another two victims are still being treated in hospital, including one in critical condition, while 10 others survived. All the boat's passengers, aged three to 40, who were relatives, were said to have been on their way back from Pulau Perhentian Kecil to Pulau Perhentian Besar after dinner when a big wave suddenly hit the boat and caused it to capsize. In the same development, Terengganu police chief Datuk Mohd Khairi Khairuddin said his team, together with the MMEA and Malaysian Marine Department, always collaborate to ensure law enforcement, including among tourist boat operators. He also reminded all boat operators to ensure that all boat drivers are not involved in any crime, especially drug-related ones. "This is because, based on the investigation, the 20-something boat driver has five previous criminal records related to drugs. So, the police and other agencies will continuously enhance law enforcement from now on," he said when met by reporters at the same event.— BERNAMA

Audit Dept adopting village and school near Tuaran

The department announced that the Kampung Topokon and Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Topokon were the respective village and school involved in the programmes, with allocations of RM1 million and RM100,000. Auditor-General Datuk Seri Wan Suraya Wan Mohd Radzi chaired the coordination meeting between various federal and state government agencies at Wisma Audit Sabah, here, Saturday. 'Following its successful implementation in 2024, the Government has expanded the programme to 200 villages throughout the country in 2025. 'The effort is in line with the whole-of-government approach that stresses on cross-agency cooperation to ensure quick and efficient service delivery to the public,' the department said in a statement, adding that the Auditor-General presented appointment letters to departments and agencies involved during the meeting. The scope of the adopted school programme would focus on upgrading the canteen to provide a safer and comfortable dining environment for pupils, while the adopted village programme would have four main areas, including upgrading the multipurpose hall, the futsal and open basketball courts, school facilities and community programmes.
