Madani govt initiatives ease rakyat's burden, say state leaders
KUALA LUMPUR: State leaders have welcomed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's latest initiatives, calling them a clear sign of the Madani government's dedication to alleviating the people's financial burdens. The measures include a one-off RM100 aid under the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) programme and a reduction in RON95 petrol prices. Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun said the aid, though modest, would significantly help vulnerable groups. 'For those in need, this is a meaningful gift that eases daily struggles,' he stated after chairing the state exco meeting in Seremban. He also praised the expansion of the Madani Rahmah Sales programme, now allocated RM600 million, as a strategic move to boost affordability. Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusof announced plans to leverage the additional public holiday on Sept 15 for tourism activities. 'This sector will be a new economic driver, covering land, air, and sea experiences,' he said outside the State Legislative Assembly. Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari highlighted the broader economic impact of the RM2 billion SARA allocation. 'While RM100 may seem small, the collective spending will stimulate local businesses,' he explained. Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow acknowledged the aid's significance despite fiscal constraints but urged more structural support for businesses and job creation. Perlis Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli and Kedah's Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor both thanked the federal government, with the latter succinctly stating, 'Alhamdulillah for the RM100 and fuel price cut.' Kelantan Deputy Menteri Besar Datuk Dr Mohamed Fadzli Hassan stressed the timing was crucial as households grapple with inflation. – Bernama

[UPDATED] More Jualan Rahmah Madani to help with living costs
KUALA LUMPUR: The government will double the allocation for the Madani Rahmah Sales this year to RM600 million to expand its reach and provide more options for Malaysians. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the initial allocation of RM300 million for this year's programme will be increased to further strengthen the initiative. "The additional funds will allow us to increase the frequency of sales and widen the number of locations nationwide, covering all 600 state constituencies. "We will also add more product varieties to give the public a wider range of choices," he said in his highly anticipated announcement, which was described as an "extraordinary tribute" to Malaysians. Yesterday, Anwar shared on Facebook that the announcement would reflect the Madani government's concern for Malaysians and the shared hope for a fairer and more prosperous future. He said that the announcement today would serve as a testament to the shared commitment to creating a more equitable and prosperous future. In his address, Anwar said Malaysia's economy remains on a strong footing, supported by consistent growth, record investments and a strengthening ringgit. He said the country posted a 4.4 per cent gross domestic product (GDP) growth in the first quarter of this year, with the second quarter expected to reach 4.5 per cent. Malaysia also jumped 11 places to 23rd in the 2025 World Competitiveness Index, while approved investments hit an all-time high of RM384 billion last year, up 17 per cent from 2023. The prime minister added that the ringgit has strengthened by more than five per cent against the US dollar this year to RM4.23, making it one of Asia's best-performing currencies. This strong performance, Anwar said, had enabled the government to implement measures to improve living standards. He also said that the unemployment rate dropped to 3.0 per cent in May, the lowest in over a decade, while over 250,000 jobs were created between 2023 and 2024. He added that the minimum wage was raised to RM1,700 effective Feb 1, with full implementation on Aug 1, and 153,000 workers under government-linked companies now earn a living wage of RM3,100 monthly.

Cooking oil app gets thumbs up at first trial in JB
Vivie Kassim says eCOSS is a great initiative as it was previously hard to get subsidised cooking oil. THE Cooking Oil Price Stabilisation Scheme (eCOSS), currently in its pilot phase in Johor, has received positive consumer feedback as an effective initiative to ensure subsidised cooking oil reaches those who truly need it. The first eCOSS trial was conducted during the Madani Rahmah Sales at Dewan Muafakat Kampung Bakar Batu in Johor Baru. A Bernama survey found the public generally welcoming the government's move to curb leakages in the distribution of the commodity. Above: Asiah says officers helped those who are not tech-savvy. Younger users described the mobile eCOSS app as user-friendly and easy to navigate, although senior citizens appeared to require some assistance. Asiah Saripan, 62, said officials from the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) guided older participants like her on how to use the app. 'I am not very good with smartphones. 'This is something new, and it may take some time for seniors like me to get used to it,' added the housewife. Vivie Kassim Zuini, 42, said the eCOSS app, which only required users to scan a QR code during purchase, helped prevent misuse and overbuying. 'I think it's a great initiative. Previously, it was difficult to get subsidised cooking oil, especially at small grocery stores. 'This system is more organised and we know it reaches the people who truly need it,' said the housewife. Anitha, 38, said eCOSS could help the government distribute the subsidised item more efficiently and transparently. 'We're concerned about abuse. 'What's meant for households is sometimes used by foreigners. 'This app helps ensure only eligible recipients get it,' said the flower vendor. Earlier, a survey found that KPDN had set up a booth to assist the public in buying subsidised cooking oil. For those without a phone, identification card, e-mail account or who forgot their password or whose device was incompatible with the eCOSS app, manual registration was made available as an alternative. Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali was quoted as saying that Johor was expected to be the first state to fully roll out eCOSS to end users, enabling all purchases of subsidised cooking oil to be digitally recorded to curb leakages. He said eCOSS verified users' identities through an e-KYC (Know Your Customer) process using MyKad, ensuring access to only eligible Malaysians.
