Day after MNS march, Mira Rd top cop shunted

Mira Bhayandar: Within 24 hours of the MNS rally in Mira-Bhayandar, where police initially denied permission only to give clearance after protests, the state govt on Wednesday transferred Mira-Bhayandar-Vasai Virar police chief Madhukar Pandey and replaced him with IPS officer Niket Kaushik, reports Vishal Rajemahadik. The rally was a counter to a protest by traders last week against the MNS attack on a shop owner for not speaking Marathi. It was preceded by a pre-dawn crackdown on MNS leaders and detentions of party supporters, described by the opposition and Shiv Sena minister Pratap Sarnaik as excessive action aimed at suppressing Marathi sentiment. A day after the rally led by MNS in Mira-Bhayandar as a counter to last week's protest by traders over Marathi speaking row, top cop Madhukar Pandey has been transferred and will now be additional director general (administration) in the state, a low-profile post that involves less interaction with the public. Niket Kaushik, the man who replaces him as police chief in the suburbs of Thane, was earlier the additional director general of the Anti-Corruption Bureau. Mira Road police had been criticised for denying permission for the march though it was sought well in advance. While Sena minister Pratap Sarnaik had questioned police action, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis had defended refusal of permission saying MNS deviated from the normal route sanctioned for demonstrations. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo He said there was information that there could be a law and order issue. MNS leaders from Mumbai had reached Mira Road to participate in it. Shiv Sena (UBT) activists also joined the march. Sarnaik was heckled by demonstrators when he visited the site to express solidarity with Marathi Ekikaran Samiti, which was among the organisers. He later said police had mishandled the situation. In the Vidhan Bhavan, he said he had spoken to Pandey and expressed dissatisfaction about denial of permission. He questioned the police action allowing traders to take out a protest march without police permission. Sarnaik also said it was not proper to detain someone early in the morning. MNS leaders, including its Palghar and Thane district chief Avinash Jadhav, were taken into preventive custody at 3am which had charged up the cadre and the locals. A prohibitory order was issued against Jadhav by police on Monday, restraining him from entering Mira Bhayandar to participate in the rally. He was released later in the day. The opposition had termed the police action as an attempt by the state govt to suppress Marathi voices.

'Don't know why BJP is anti-Maharashtra and anti-Marathi': Aaditya Thackeray

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray on Tuesday slammed the BJP amidst the ongoing language row in Maharashtra, stating that he doesn't understand why the BJP is "anti-Maharashtra" and "anti-Marathi". Aaditya Thackeray said that everyone has the right to protest in the country.(PTI) Aaditya Thackeray addressed the issue of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena workers being detained in Mumbai, stating that everyone has the right to protest in the country. "Everyone has the right to protest. We don't know why the BJP is anti-Maharashtra and anti-Marathi and why people were arrested last night. There was a peaceful protest. They should have allowed it. Everyone has the right to protest", he said. Aaditya Thackeray noted that the BJP is trying to spread "hatred" and create conflicts between "Marathi and non-Marathi people". He stated that the BJP's tactic is to create division ahead of the BMC and Bihar elections, which wont succeed. "The BJP is trying to spread hatred in Maharashtra and create conflicts between Marathi and non-Marathi people. Their agenda won't work. Their agenda for Bihar and BMC elections is to create division. This is the BJP's tactic, and it won't succeed", he said. Mumbai Police on Tuesday detained several Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers who were protesting against traders for allegedly not speaking Marathi. The protest was part of a larger controversy surrounding the use of language in the city. MNS workers had gathered in the Mira-Bhayandar area to protest against traders who they claimed were not speaking Marathi. The police had earlier denied permission for the rally, citing intelligence inputs and potential law and order issues. Despite this, the MNS workers went ahead with their protest, leading to their detention by the police. Mira-Bhayander, Vasai-Virar Police Commissioner Madhukar Pandey stated that the police had detained some people and appealed to the city's residents to cooperate with the police. Mumbai Police detain MNS workers protesting over language row

Thane (Maharashtra) [India], July 8 (ANI): Mumbai Police on Tuesday detained several Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers who were protesting against traders for allegedly not speaking Marathi. The police had suggested an alternative route for the rally, which the MNS workers had refused to accept. 'Based on the High Court's instructions, we stated that you can take permission to hold rally, but change the route. We also had some intelligence inputs, based on which we made this decision. We have detained some people, and I appeal to the city's residents to cooperate with the police,' Pandey told ANI. The controversy began when some traders in Mumbai were allegedly attacked by MNS workers for not speaking Marathi. The MNS had been demanding that traders and shopkeepers in the city speak Marathi, leading to tensions between the two groups. The police have been working to maintain law and order in the city and prevent any further escalation of the situation. The MNS has been advocating for the use of Marathi in public places and has been critical of those who do not speak the language. The party's chief, Raj Thackeray, has been vocal about the need for people to learn and speak Marathi, especially in Maharashtra. MNS workers protested in the Mira Bhayandar area at Mira road in Thane earlier today, protesting the now rolled back order of the Maharashtra government mandating Hindi language to be taught in primary schools. MNS leader Avinash Jhadav was also detained by the police for protesting at Mira Road. Notably, Maharashtra Minister Pratap Baburao Sarnaik broke ranks with his government and came to Mira Bhayandar to support the MNS protest against traders over the language row. But instead of a warm welcome, MNS workers called him a traitor and forced the minister to leave the spot. The minister had no choice but to leave as the crowd grew agitated. Meanwhile, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that the administration asked them to take an alternate route, to which they did not agree. Speaking to reporters outside the Assembly, Devendra Fadnavis said, 'It would be wrong to say that we did not permit the protest at Mira Road. I have spoken to the commissioner, who told me that the Police did not refuse permission for the protest.' (ANI)

Trial in Delhi riots larger conspiracy case set to be delayed after judge's transfer, again

Following a recent reshuffle of 135 judges across New Delhi, the trial in the larger conspiracy case related to the 2020 Northeast Delhi riots is set to be delayed again. The case was at the stage of arguments on charges, after which the trial was likely to begin. Five of the 18 accused people had concluded their arguments over the past few months. They will now have to argue from scratch as will Special Public Prosecutors Amit Prasad and Madhukar Pandey, who had concluded their arguments from the Delhi Police Special Cell's side. 'Accordingly all the Special Public Prosecutors and counsel of accused persons are directed to furnish their schedule regarding the time frame and manner in which they will address arguments, particularly time/hours taken by them,' said Additional Sessions Judge Lalit Kumar of Karkardooma Court in his order on od. ASJ Kumar, who replaced ASJ Sameer Bajpai, stated that the arguments on charge have to be expedited and listed the case on June 6. This was the first time he had heard the case. Judge Bajpai had been transferred following an administrative order issued by the Delhi High Court last week. This is the second time the case has been delayed because of a routine transfer. In October 2023, the Court of ASJ Amitabh Rawat (who heard the cases before ASJ Bajpai) directed arguments on charges to be conducted on a day-to-day basis. Judge Rawat was transferred in mid-December 2023. The Delhi Police Special Cell is investigating the alleged conspiracy behind the riots that broke out in February 2020 and left 53 dead and over 700 injured. They have booked 18 accused under relevant provisions of the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the Indian Penal Code. The first chargesheet was filed on November 20, 2020, and the fourth supplementary chargesheet was filed on June 8, 2023 — after a gap of two and a half years. The accused persons include Devangana Kalita, Natasha Narwal, Ishrat Jahan, Faizan Khan, Safoora Zargar, Asif Iqbal Tanha (all six on bail), Tahir Husain, Umar Khalid, Khalid Saifi; Sharjeel Imam; Meeran Haider; Gulfisha Fatima; Shifa-Ur-Rehman; Shadab Ahmed; Tasleem Ahmed; Saleem Malik; Mohd Saleem Khan and Athar Khan (all twelve in jail for over four years).
