Odisha: Nuapada conducts mega Cleanliness drive, paves way for single-use plastic free district
Nuapada (Odisha) [India], July 2 (ANI): Nuapada district conducted India's largest Mega Cleanliness Drive, executing over 3,170 simultaneous cleanliness-cum-plantation drives across educational institutions and government and private establishments, an official statement said. The initiative comes after Nuapada was declared the first district in Odisha and the sixth in India to be Single-Use Plastic Free. The district-level event, held on Monday morning, aimed to fulfil the targets set under the one-month-long SUP-Free campaign. According to officials, the drive covered nearly all villages and wards in the district and saw extensive participation from government personnel, volunteers, and residents, the release added. Led by Collector Madhusudan Dash, Chief Development Officer Lambodhar Dharua, and Additional District Magistrate (General) Subash Ch. Raita, and Secretary of the District Legal Services Authority, Navaneeta Dash, the district cleaned more than 3,000 garbage vulnerable points (GVPs) in a single day. Further as per the release, as part of the operation, approximately 30 tonnes of plastic waste were collected. In addition, over 1,00,000 saplings were planted during the drive as part of the district's green initiative. The three notified area councils (NACs) of the Nuapada district also conducted raids at shops and business establishments to seize banned single-use plastic items. (ANI)

Bhubaneswar: Nuapada has become the first district in India to conduct the largest mega cleanliness drive, marking a significant milestone in the environmental efforts. The event, which took place on Tuesday, involved over 3,170 cleanliness-cum-plantation drives across educational institutions and govt and private bodies, following its recent achievement as the sixth district in India and the first in Odisha to be declared single-use plastic free. The drive, held between 8 am and 10 am, saw massive participation from govt officials, volunteers and local residents, all united under the leadership of district collector Madhusudan Dash and chief development officer Lambodhar Dharua. Together, they tackled over 3,000 garbage vulnerable points in a single day. The key achievements also include 32.52 tonnes of plastic waste collected and more than 102,540 saplings planted. Dash emphasised the significance of the event and stated that this is not just a cleanliness campaign but a public movement towards a cleaner, greener, and plastic-free Nuapada. "We wish to focus on maximum sensitisation and minimum enforcement," he said. The event sets a benchmark for environmental initiatives across Odisha and the entire country, showcasing the power of collective action. Nuapada admn declares it is free of single-use plastic
1 2 3 Bhubaneswar: The Nuapada administration has declared the district as single-use plastic free, becoming the first in Odisha to achieve the objective, officials said. District collector Madhusudan Dash had unveiled an ambitious month-long campaign that combined infrastructure development with community engagement. With the official declaration, Nuapada emerged as one of India's pioneering districts to formally eliminate single-use plastic, echoing this year's global theme of ending plastic pollution. As part of the initiative, 103 panchayat-level segregation sheds and two plastic waste management units were made operational to streamline waste processing. Simultaneously, widespread awareness and capacity-building efforts reached both rural and urban communities, inspiring active participation in over 700 cleanliness drives. Officials said further strengthening the district's ecological foundation, 1 lakh saplings were planted, and 500 green buffer zones created to mitigate pollution and restore degraded areas, setting a replicable model for sustainable, plastic-free living. "The commitment represents a significant step towards environmental sustainability," said collector Dash.
