An antidote to ‘isolation and chaos:' KQED ‘Forum' host opening Oakland community space

Oakland is getting an ambitious new community space from two prominent local writers who hope a combination of coffee, local goods and events will create a much-needed refuge during what they deem an 'era of isolation and chaos.' Couple Alexis Madrigal, co-host of KQED's daily public affairs show 'Forum,' and author and creative director Sarah Rich are opening Local Economy at 6028 College Ave. in the Rockridge neighborhood this fall. The duo, who have lived nearby for 14 years, have long flirted with the idea of starting something similar, but finally seized the moment. 'I'm feeling deeply the many concerns swirling around us in the nation and the world,' said Rich, who has worked as an editorial director for Heath Ceramics, grocery delivery service Good Eggs and design firm Ideo. 'Doing something in local space, in community, to physically connect people is one of the best forms of concrete action we can take right now.' Rich and Madrigal intend Local Economy to be many things. The owners have partnered with Painted Leopard, a West Berkeley microroaster that uses beans from El Salvador, to set up a coffee cart in the front. A retail section will be stocked with goods from independent makers. They plan to host authors (Local Economy is conveniently located next door to East Bay Booksellers), food popups and zine-making for kids. Community members have already made their own suggestions, like a kimchi class or fungi-centric book club. A neighbor is building them two large, 8-foot tables that will anchor the space. Madrigal and Rich hope to replicate the connection of weekly dinners the couple has hosted with friends since the pandemic. Local Economy will offer memberships, though programs and events will be open to the public. Madrigal and Rich said they were inspired by various local models, like Berkeley's La Peña Cultural Center, a community and social justice hub founded in 1975, and the Swallow, an experimental restaurant and collective food writer Ruth Reichl ran inside the Berkeley Art Museum in the 1970s. Newer reference points include the Ruby, a creative collective in San Francisco, and Oakland's Womb House Books, which specializes in work by female, nonbinary and queer writers and authors of color. 'I feel like it's such a Bay Area tradition,' said Madrigal. 'There's a thing the community needs and we're going to D.I.Y. it and call in a constellation of people who want this thing to happen. It feels like we're in another moment like that.'

Auburn baseball adds Eddie Madrigal, Logan Gregorio from transfer portal

A pair of solid bats are heading to the Plains The transfer portal continues to be kind to Auburn baseball as the Tigers have grabbed two more solid bats. Former Northern Illinois ironman Logan Gregorio and ex-Saint Mary's utility player Eddie Madrigal announced their commitment to Auburn on Thursday, running Auburn's transfer portal haul to eight players. Gregorio was the first player to announce his transfer to Auburn on Thursday. The rising senior from Naperville, Illinois announced his transfer on social media, where he thanked head coach Butch Thompson, as well as Karl Nonemaker and Everett Teaford for the opportunity. Gregorio earned all-MAC second-team honors after hitting .333 with 18 home runs and 69 RBI for the Huskies in 2025. He led the team in several categories such as average, home runs, RBI, hits, doubles, and slugging percentage. Later in the day, Madrigal announced his intent to transfer to Auburn after spending three seasons at St. Mary's. Madrigal earned several postseason honors, including All-WCC First Team, ABCA All-West Region, and second-team All-America honors from the ABCA and NCBWA. Madrigal is viewed as the potential replacement for Cooper McMurray; however, there could be an issue as Madrigal is receiving buzz from the MLB draft. Should he elect to stay at Auburn for his final season, he would bring plenty of power to Auburn's lineup after a 2025 season that saw him hit 22 home runs and plate 79 runs while hitting .368. Madrigal and Gregorio join a growing list of players that are set to transfer to Auburn, including UAB infielder Todd Clay, Texas State infielder Ryne Garber, and Western Kentucky pitcher Drew Whalen. St. Mary's baseball making itself known again with NCAA regional berth

For every autograph signed Monday by a member of the NCAA regional-bound St. Mary's baseball team at University Credit Union Pavilion, a kid who probably already had one or two from, say, star first baseman Ed Madrigal or outfielder Aiden Taurek eagerly asked for another. Neither Madrigal nor Taurek are mainstream names. But they're the closest thing to celebrities in Moraga, a practically stranger-less town where a chance encounter with someone you know is more like a certainty. 'You know everyone around here, everyone knows you,' Taurek told the Chronicle. And because of Eric Valenzuela, everyone knows St. Mary's baseball. In his second stint as head coach of the Gaels, Valenzuela needed only two years to put them back in the NCAA Tournament for only the second time in program history, dating back to its inclusion as the school's first sport in 1872. The college baseball selection show Monday morning slotted St. Mary's in the Corvallis regional as a four-seed, meaning they'll face No. 8 overall seed Oregon State — a longtime baseball powerhouse — in Friday's first round of a double-elimination format. Valenzuela acknowledged to the small group that gathered at UCU Pavilion the rigors of the road ahead, along with the incredible journey they've already trekked. An at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament was out of the question. As a three-seed, St. Mary's needed to win the West Coast Conference tournament to automatically qualify for a regional. The only other time the Gaels were crowned conference champions was in 2016, but with Valenzuela at the helm. He built St. Mary's into a perennial winning program from 2014-19, left for Long Beach State from 2020-23, and in 2024 circled back to Moraga. After an intense stretch of conference tournament games in Las Vegas last week, including a Saturday that began with a 14-inning defeat to San Diego and ended with St. Mary's WCC championship-clinching 9-8 win in a same-day rematch, Valenzuela has the Gaels back to where they were before he left. St. Mary's fell below .500 in every season during his brief absence, save the COVID-abbreviated 2020 campaign, before Valenzuela posted a 34-22 record by the end of his first season back in 2024. A senior-heavy roster subsequently disbanded, in addition to transfer portal losses that included catcher Bear Harrison (Texas A&M), outfielder Dalton Mashore (South Carolina) and 6-foot-11 pitcher Jason Reitz (Oregon), who was set to step into a weekend role for the Gaels if he stayed. Despite the turnover, St. Mary's held a top-50 batting average nationally (.301) with a lineup led by Madrigal (.372) and Taurek (.336), a first-year starter. 'I'm proud of this group because six of our nine guys in our lineup from a very (good) offensive team last year are gone,' Valenzuela said. 'To be able to have a better year offensively and overall was huge.' Madrigal was stripped of his opportunity to shine as a third-year sophomore in 2024 following a season-ending knee injury just several games in. His breakthrough this year, marked by a .372 batting average, 21 home runs and 77 RBI (tied for ninth-most in the country), earned him a microphone moment Monday. He was the only player allowed to address the pavilion, though his words stretched no further than a sentence or two. The All-WCC first-team selection need not overstate what has transpired: St. Mary's College of California, a basketball school, is good in baseball again.
