More rainfall activity to bring respite from heat across T.N. from July 16
Searing heat may let up in parts of Tamil Nadu, as more places may receive rainfall from July 16. Heavy rainfall is likely to occur over parts of the Western Ghats and northern districts this week. The Nilgiris and its neighbouring districts may receive heavy rainfall till the end of this week. From July 16 to 18, districts around Chennai, including Chengalpattu and Kancheepuram, are likely to see significant rainfall. The Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai, has predicted a drop in the maximum temperature across the State from Wednesday. A yellow alert has been issued , for the Nilgiris from July 15, with heavy rain expected to cover parts of north Tamil Nadu by July 16. An orange alert has been issued for the Western Ghats between July 17 and 20. Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Ranipet may receive heavy rainfall on July 17. On July 18, intense rain of up to 13 cm may cover six districts, including Tiruvannamalai, Cuddalore. P. Senthamarai Kannan, Director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, said the well-marked low pressure area would influence westerly wind convergence over the State, bringing light to moderate rain in some parts this week. On Monday too, parts of the State sizzled, with Madurai Airport recording the hottest temperature for the day, at 39.4 degrees Celsius. Chennai's Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam recorded above normal temperatures of 37.7 degrees Celsius and 38.7 degrees Celsius. Evening thunderstorms provide only temporary relief, as hot westerlies trigger scorching heat the following day. The same weather trend may continue on Tuesday, with maximum temperature likely to soar by two-four degrees Celsius above average in a few pockets of the State. This week's wet spell may increase the overall southwest monsoon rainfall, which is 9% below its seasonal average as on Monday, officials said.

Forecast for hotter, humid days in TN for next few days
Chennai: The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has issued a weather advisory predicting a sharp rise in temperatures across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry over the coming days, driven by strong westerly winds prevailing in the lower tropospheric level. According to the RMC, dry weather conditions will dominate much of the state this week. 'Maximum temperatures are likely to rise by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius on July 8 and 9 in several districts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal,' the advisory stated. The increase is attributed to the influence of moderate to strong westerly winds blowing across the region at lower atmospheric levels. The temperature spike is expected to peak on July 9, with several regions likely to experience both high heat and increased humidity. The RMC has urged residents to take precautions against heat-related health issues, especially during peak daytime hours. On Monday, Madurai Airport registered the highest maximum temperature in the state at 39 degrees Celsius, while Karur Paramathi recorded the lowest temperature for the day. Chennai too is expected to see soaring mercury levels, with forecasts suggesting the temperature could breach the 38 degrees Celsius mark. 'Light to moderate rainfall is, however, expected in some parts of the city,' the RMC noted. Despite the prevailing heatwave-like conditions, the weather department has also forecast isolated spells of rainfall across the region. Light to moderate showers are expected in select areas of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal until July 13. This is likely to bring some relief, especially in the hilly and forested regions. On Monday, Naduvattam in The Nilgiris district recorded the highest rainfall at 6 cm, followed by Avalanche (also in The Nilgiris) with 5 cm, and Chinnakallar in Coimbatore district with 4 cm. The RMC continues to monitor the situation and has advised residents to stay updated through official channels, stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight, and take precautions during sudden rain spells.

Tamil Nadu NH-87 expansion: Cabinet approves 4-lane highway to connect Paramakudi and Ramanathapuram — Key details
Tamil Nadu: The Union Cabinet has approved the construction of a four-lane highway along the Paramakudi - Ramanathapuram Section of National Highway-87 (NH-87) in Tamil Nadu. The project — with a total capital outlay of ₹ 1,853.16 crore — was approved on Tuesday, July 1. Currently, connectivity between Madurai, Paramakudi, Ramanathapuram, Mandapam, Rameshwaram, and Dhanushkodi relies on a two-lane stretch of NH-87 and associated State Highways, which experience significant traffic congestion. To ease congestion and improve safety, the government will upgrade the 46.7 km stretch of NH-87 from Paramakudi to Ramanathapuram into a four-lane highway, as per the official statement. The proposed highway will link five major National Highways — NH-38, NH-85, NH-36, NH-536, and NH-32 — as well as three State Highways — SH-47, SH-29, and SH-34. The expansion will also improve multi-modal connectivity by linking to : 1) Madurai and Rameshwaram railway stations, 2) Madurai Airport, 3) minor ports at Pamban and Rameshwaram. Map of the extension The project will be developed on Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM), Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said while briefing on the decisions taken at the Cabinet meeting. The expansion will also generate approximate 8.4 lakh person-days of direct and 10.45 lakh person-days of indirect employment The government also expects the corridor to strengthen regional connectivity, boost tourism to Rameshwaram and Dhanushkodi, and facilitate trade and industrial development in southern Tamil Nadu. The project is also expected to open new avenues of growth, development and prosperity in surrounding regions, as per the official statement. Given the high volume of vehicles, the existing two-lane stretch of NH-87 often sees frequent accidents and traffic jams. Upgrading that particular stretch of the national highway to a four-lane highway had been a long-standing demand from various stakeholders in Ramanathapuram, as per multiple reports. Consequently in November 2024, NHAI launched projects to upgrade the existing two-lane road from Paramakudi to Ramanathapuram into four-lane roads.
