Cierra Ortega's grandmother defends her amid racism backlash following Love Island USA exit

Cierra Ortega's grandmother, Magdalena Carrillo, has spoken out in defense of her granddaughter following Cierra's departure from Love Island USA amid a racism controversy. Speaking to TMZ on July 10, Magdalena clarified that Cierra and their family are not racist, emphasizing their immigrant background. Magdalena expressed her shock and heartbreak over the intense backlash Cierra has faced, including claims that people may have called ICE on the family, which she found "appalling." Magdalena, who has been a pillar of support for Cierra, stated that the family's immigrant status makes the accusations even more difficult to comprehend. She added that her granddaughter's character has been misjudged by the public, emphasizing that the family is rooted in values of respect and understanding. Magdalena also noted that the backlash has affected them all deeply, leaving her feeling heartbroken to see Cierra endure such severe online hate. Cierra was removed from the show after a past post resurfaced in which she used a racial slur. Following her exit, Cierra posted an apology video on July 9, expressing deep remorse for her actions. In the video, Cierra acknowledged that she had naively used an offensive term in the past, which she now realizes caused significant harm. She addressed the Asian community specifically, saying, 'I want to start by addressing not just anyone I've hurt but most importantly the entire Asian community.' Cierra admitted that she was unaware of the word's harmful history and impact, stating, 'Intent doesn't excuse ignorance.' Cierra also spoke about the emotional toll the backlash has taken on her family, revealing that they have received threats, and her family feels unsafe in their own home. She stated that while no apology could undo the harm caused, her actions moving forward will demonstrate her growth. Magdalena also commented on Cierra's apology, calling it heartfelt and sincere, and emphasized that the young woman's actions going forward would speak louder than words.

Coca Access and Benefit Sharing Agreement Authorized by Peru's National Institute of Agrarian Innovation (INIA) Supports Research Efforts of Jaguar Health and Filament Health Joint Venture, Magdalena Biosciences, into Potential Mental Health and CNS Indications of Coca

Magdalena is focused on developing novel, natural prescription medicines derived from plants for mental health indications SAN FRANCISCO, CA / ACCESS Newswire / July 8, 2025 / Jaguar Health, Inc. (NASDAQ:JAGX) ("Jaguar") today announced that an access and benefit sharing agreement focused on two cultivated species of the coca plant - Erythroxylum coca and Erythroxylum novogranatense - from Peru has been signed between Peru's National Institute of Agrarian Innovation (INIA) and Psilo Scientific, a subsidiary of Filament Health Corp. (OTC:FLHLF) ("Filament"). The access agreement authorizes the research program of Magdalena Biosciences ("Magdalena"), a US-based joint venture formed by Jaguar and Filament, into a variety of potential mental health and central nervous system (CNS) indications for coca. "Psilo Scientific, Filament, Jaguar and Magdalena are very pleased about the signing of this coca access agreement," said Steven King, Ph.D., Jaguar's Chief Sustainable Supply and Ethnobotanical Research Officer and an Advisor to Magdalena. "As part of the authorization of this research project, an Internationally Recognized Certificate of Compliance (IRCC) has been granted and published on the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) website. The CBD is an international treaty for the conservation of biodiversity, the sustainable use of the components of biodiversity, and the equitable sharing of the benefits derived from the use of genetic resources. An IRCC is a key mechanism under the CBD and the Nagoya Protocol to ensure fair and equitable sharing of benefits from the use of genetic resources and indigenous knowledge." "The entire Magdalena team is deeply grateful to our Peruvian partner organizations in this research program, the Univeridad Nacional Agraria La Molina (La Molina) and the Empresa Nacional de La Coca (ENACO) for their collaboration, expertise and guidance," said Dr. King. "We are also grateful to the people of the Andean region who have domesticated the sacred plant, 'mama coca', which is and has been interwoven in the ritual, spiritual and traditional medicine of indigenous and non-indigenous communities for centuries. A great deal of the history and current work on coca was presented by indigenous leaders, scientists, government officials, social scientists and nonprofit public health experts in Peru at the Wisdom of the Leaf Coca Summit , organized by the McKenna Academy , in February 2025." Magdalena's mission is to develop novel, safe, efficacious next-generation psychoactive FDA-approved plant-based drugs under FDA Botanical Guidance for mental health and CNS indications. "We believe that the development of Botanical Drugs from 'whole extract' coca leaf can provide therapeutic benefit, and that the development process will benefit the people of Peru, who have been sustainably producing coca leaves for several thousand years," said Dr. Karen Brunke, Jaguar's EVP of Corporate and Business Development and Acting CEO of Magdalena. "In traditional medicine, coca leaves are utilized as a remedy for a wide variety of conditions, ranging from alleviating oral pain, digestive maladies, hunger, and altitude sickness, as well as muscular and skeletal aches. Many commonly used neuropsychiatric medications have side effects such as personality changes or sedation. With centuries of use by indigenous healers and traditional psychiatrists, plant-derived medicines offer potential new mechanisms of action for treating mental disorders while being potentially safer than chemically synthesized small molecule drugs that may have 'off target' effects." "The authorization from INIA to Magdalena and Psilo Scientific is a key step in the important work of exploring coca leaf's therapeutic potential for the treatment of various mental health and CNS indications," said Benjamin Lightburn, Chief Executive Officer of Filament Health and Magdalena Board Member. Magdalena, Woman of Joy review – sex, sin and saintliness with a tour de force host

Magdalena appears from the dark, perched on a bar stool, cigarettes and liquor by her side, an array of hanging lamps casting a sultry glow. Her first words set the tone – 'You want to fuck me,' she says – and lead us into an uncompromising introduction, littered with sex, violence and sideways jokes. She is the creation of French-English actor and writer Lily Sinko, and as her character's name suggests, we're hurled through a life of saintliness and sin, despair and redemption, as Magdalena does the best with the hand she's dealt. We travel to her childhood in Marseille with a hostile 'Papa', an airport abduction that sees her deposited at the Virgin Mary School for Bad Bad Girls (Cash Only), and a wild escape through the streets of France, finding fleeting refuge in a cathedral. It's a tour de force performance from Sinko. She rages, writhes, provokes and teases her way through Magdalena's life story. Whether she's in a high-kicking fight, scrabbling for a missing passport, or falling to her knees at a possible sign from a possible god, Sinko's commitment is total, her presence enthralling. Often, the story itself feels secondary in comparison. The bare bones of Magdalena's tale are horrifying – endless abuse and exploitation – but every detail is cartoonishly heightened (an eyeball dislodged by a stiletto, stealing camembert from the mouth of a stranger). It plays out as a surreal farce, filtered through our oversexualised storyteller. Tonally, that's challenging at times, leaving us in limbo between laughs and deeper investment in the narrative. We skim the surface of bigger ideas. Parallels are drawn between Magdalena's treatment in her father's house, at the brothel and within the church. Questions are asked about who is worthy of redemption. But while Magdalena might not inspire profound revelations, Sinko ensures there is never a dull moment. No, I'm not a British spy

Dante's Beach, Ravenna The youngest of our six children, Giuseppe, nine, received the Eucharist for the first time on Sunday. He and the other 12 new communicants looked angelic in their white robes. They all had impressive wooden crosses hanging from their necks and the five girls had wreaths of tiny flowers in their jet-black hair. Once Don Mauro had finished dispensing the Body of Christ, the bells peeled as if a wedding had taken place. There followed a pleasant open-air lunch by the sea and I wondered: 'Is it better to live in Italy or Britain?' Certainly, society is less fractured here. The weather is more helpful to both body and soul and the food is effortlessly superior, despite all the delusional British bragging about the amazing results of fancy fusion. Italy, yes, is a great place to live – but it's an awful place to work. Employers avoid proper contracts at all costs as that would mean shelling out on 'extras' such as tax and national insurance and paying a living wage. Last summer, the Venezuelan woman in charge of the restaurant by the beach where our middle daughter, Magdalena, 17, was a waitress failed to cough up the pittance she'd agreed to pay. But Magdalena and her mother, Carla, were too timid to cause a scene. 'Basta!' I bellowed manfully. 'Your mentality is why the Mafia exists.' Risking not just the wrath of Carla but a heart attack, I stormed off to confront the Venezuelan myself with Magdalena in tow. I told the woman that the wages she owed my daughter were anyway those of a slave and that her sister, a lawyer, would be interested.

Fearless Against the Right – DW – 06/02/2025

Right-wing radicals are becoming increasingly vocal in Germany. But many people oppose them and are fighting to defend democracy. Where do they find the courage to stand up to this sometimes-violent milieu? Right-wing extremists are stronger than ever. In cities, the counter movement is strong and highly visible. But in more rural areas, anyone openly opposing the far right often has to reckon with threats and attempts at intimidation. A film team accompanied just some of the individuals whose resistance puts them at great personal risk. Image: WDR Ocean Hale campaigns against the right in rural Saxony. In contrast to the demonstrations that take place in large cities such as Dresden and Leipzig, demonstrations in favor of a tolerant and diverse Germany are relatively small here. Most people either march openly on the opposite side or keep their political views to themselves. But Ocean isn't afraid to show his face. He's already organized two Christopher Street Days in the small town of Waldheim, and isn't deterred by death threats and acid attacks. Image: WDR Magdalena has launched the #ReclaimTikTok initiative. Together with others, she produces as much content as possible, all under the label: tolerant and anti-fascist. The campaign has already caught the attention of far-right activist Martin Sellner. Since her real name has been shared on various right-wing social media channels, Magdalena is also having to take greater care as she goes about her everyday life. Image: WDR Jacob is an independent blogger and photographer in Gera, Thuringia. Whenever members of theReichsbürger(Reich Citizens) movement gather from all over Germany for demonstrations in his hometown, he reports from crowd. Jacob thinks many people are irritated by these regular far-right rallies in Gera, but that they're afraid to speak out. His aim: to document and inform, in order to increase public awareness. Ocean, Magdalena, Jacob - they're all taking personal risks and sacrificing their free time and anonymity to stand up for an open-minded society. What drives them? Where do they find their courage, when things get risky?
