Marvel reportedly eyeing four big names for its X-Men movie reboot, and one rumor is so outlandish I'd be astonished if it's true

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. A spate of cast rumors concerning Marvel's X-Men movie reboot have emerged online Various leakers claim four big names have been tapped to play a trio of iconic mutants Fans are being advised to take the aforementioned speculation with a big pinch of salt Marvel's X-Men movie reboot is still a few years away. But, after numerous rumors appeared online last week (May 16-21) linking various big-name actors with roles in said film, the latest round of silly season casting is absolutely upon us. The comic giant's iconic mutants are set to play some part in the Multiverse Saga's next two Avengers movies. Indeed, with legacy characters including Patrick Stewart's Professor X and Ian McKellen's Magneto among Avengers: Doomsday's initial 27-strong cast, actors who appeared in 20th Century Fox's now-defunct X-Men franchise will return for one last hurrah before they pass the torch onto the next generation. Despite the fact that Avengers: Doomsday and its sequel Avengers: Secret Wars won't land in theaters until May 2026 and May 2027, Marvel is already scouring the globe (according to industry insiders, anyway) for A-listers to portray the X-Men in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Now, before we dig into these rumors, I should point out that it's not the actors who've been linked with each role that have irked me. They're all incredibly talented individuals, so I've no problem with any of them. My gripe relates to the fact that the next X-Men film is still years away, yet this is just the start of what I expect to be hundreds of stars reportedly tapped to appear as part of the mutant ensemble. But back to the rumors in hand. The first – and certainly the most eyebrow-raising – piece of gossip that's appeared online comes from prominent leaker MyTimeToShineHello (MTTSH). According to the industry insider, whose recent track record can be described as 'mixed' at best, none other than Daniel Day-Lewis was being eyed to succeed McKellen and fellow Magneto actor Michael Fassbender as the metal-manipulating big a coup as it would be for Marvel to persuade Day-Lewis to join the MCU, this particular piece of speculation feels like unlikely, to say the least. The award-winning actor announced his retirement from acting over seven years ago and, apart from appearing in Anemone, an upcoming drama directed by his son Ronan, Day-Lewis hasn't starred in another big- or small-screen project since 2017's Phantom Thread. It seems improbable, then, that he'd be coaxed out of retirement in what would likely to be a multi-picture MCU deal. Day-Lewis isn't the only fan-favorite actor who's been linked with a significant role as part of the MCU's new X-Men line-up. Bryan Cranston – yes, he of Breaking Bad and Malcolm in the Middle fame, to name just two of his most notable roles – is said to be in the running to potentially star opposite Day-Lewis as the MCU's Charles Xavier. Again, this seems like an unusual fit for an actor whose best roles have seen him embody morally complex characters. In that sense, playing an X-Men adjacent individual/antagonist, such as Mister Sinister – a role Cranston has previously spoken about wanting to tackle (per Digital Spy) a decade ago – would be a better fit. Then there's speculation about who'll play Ororo Munroe, otherwise known as the iconic weather-manipulating mutant called Storm. Per MainMiddleMan, Marvel has approached Kirby Howell-Baptiste (The Sandman) and Jodie Turner-Smith (Star Wars: The Acolyte) to play her. Now, it would be remiss of me not to say that all of the above should be taken with a massive pinch of salt. For one, another industry leaker – Apocalyptic Horseman – has said they haven't even heard that a cast shortlist has been drawn up by Marvel. Regardless of how accurate Apocalyptic Horseman's sources may be, remember the unrelenting rumor mill about who'd play The Fantastic Four, aka Marvel's First Family, in The Fantastic Four: First Steps and beyond in the MCU? Everyone from Adam Driver and Penn Badgley with linked with playing Reed Richards, while the likes of Margot Robbie and Jodie Comer were supposedly tapped to portray Sue Storm. In the end, such hearsay proved to be nothing more than idle gossip. So, just because Day-Lewis and company have been tentatively linked with roles in the MCU, it doesn't mean they'll actually sign on to appear in films once the Multiverse Saga ends at some point during or after Marvel Phase 6. If Marvel is aiming for a middle ground between the elder acting statespeople who appeared in the first X-Men trilogy and their younger counterparts who starred in Fox's own X-Men reboot, Howell-Baptiste or Turner-Smith would be good fits for a mid-30s Munroe. Where Cranston and Day-Lewis are concerned, though, I'd be amazed if they ink deals to play Professor X and Magneto. We'll have to wait and see if any of these rumors have substance to them. The one thing that's absolutely certain, though, is these won't be the last X-Men casting rumors we read about. It's going to be a long and at times frustrating period of speculation, so strap in for plenty more outlandish rumors in the weeks, months, and even years to come, everyone. In the meantime, find out how to watch the X-Men movies in order and how to watch the Marvel movies in order. Marvel gives exciting update about the MCU's future after Avengers: Secret Wars, and it'll be all about the X-Men: 'It really leads us into a new age of mutants' New Avengers: Doomsday behind-the-scenes images from Robert Downey Jr are getting Marvel fans excited about his portrayal of Doctor Doom Marvel reveals first trailer for its long-gestating Ironheart TV show, but its rumored episodic release format has got me worried

Daniel Day-Lewis as Magneto? The Most Ridiculous X-MEN Casting Rumor Yet — GeekTyrant

We're officially deep into the wild west of MCU rumor season, and the latest nugget circulating online is one of the most outrageous yet. Daniel Day-Lewis, the famously reclusive, three-time Oscar-winning actor, is reportedly being eyed to play Magneto in Marvel's upcoming X-Men reboot. This unhinged-sounding claim comes from scooper @MyTimeToShineH, who posted simply, 'Daniel Day-Lewis is being eyed to play Magneto in the MCU.' As you might imagine, that enough to set social media ablaze. It also follows a previous rumor that Marvel was eyeing Denzel Washington for the role, so clearly, the casting speculation machine is throwing prestige names into the blender right now. Day-Lewis playing Magneto is hard to imagine, but not for lack of talent. He's widely regarded as one of the greatest actors to ever step in front of a camera. With roles in My Left Foot , There Will Be Blood , and Lincoln , it's hard to imagine him come out of retirement to play a comic book character for Marvel. I mean, maybe someone at Marvel Studios mentioned the name as a joke, like, 'Yeah, maybe we can get Daniel Day-Lewis to play Magneto!' The actor recently came out of retirement to star in his son's film project Anemone , which he co-wrote, but once he's done with that I imagine he'll go back into retirement. And if he;'s going to come out of retirement again, it's not going to be for a Marvel movie! Jumping from a deeply personal indie project into the Marvel machine? That's one hell of a leap. However, Daniel Day-Lewis would be awesome in the role, and he would also be the the first actor with Jewish heritage to portray Magneto in live-action. The character's identity as a Holocaust survivor and Jewish antihero has long been central to his backstory. As of now, Marvel has not confirmed any casting decisions for Magneto in the MCU's X-Men reboot, and they probably won't for a while. Would Daniel Day-Lewis ever actually say yes to Magneto? Almost definitely not. Do we want to live in a universe where he does? Sure… why not!

Magneto's Daughter has been Cast in Avengers: Doomsday

Anyone who is updated in their Marvel comic lore knows that Magneto had children, and while Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver have been in the spotlight since Age of Ultron , there is one other offspring of Erik Magnus that may actually appear in Avengers: Doomsday . According to @AlexFromCC (via @cosmic_marvel) Polaris is going to be appearing Doomsday , and she's going to be played by Neve Campbell ( Scream franchise). No details have been revealed about the size of her role, but it's possible that she could be the daughter of Ian McKellen's Magneto—who has been confirmed for the movie already. In the comics, Polaris is the only child of Magneto to actually have his magnetic powers. She has been a member of the X-Men and X-Factor, and she has a kind of on-and-off relationship with Alex Summers a.k.a. Havok. Polaris has had appearances in animated X-Men media, but she had a live-action appearance in The Gifted where she was played by Emma Dumont. We don't know how Polaris will be tackled in Doomsday , but it's possible that she could be one of the more seasoned X-Men, counting Campbell's age and relationship with an existing character. Though there are a lot of legacy characters in Doomsday like Nightcrawler and Mystique, I am hopeful that we could see some other characters be able to shine. I have always been against the nostalgia-baiting angle that Marvel has been going through recently, but if they're going all-in with these Avengers movies, they may as well go crazy. Avengers: Doomsday is expected to hit theaters on May 1, 2026.

'Avengers: Doomsday': The five-hour plus casting announcement that's exciting and confusing fans

ADVERTISEMENT It's the 5 hour and 30 minutes cast announcement which confused and excited fans in equal measure. Instead of bringing the cast of the next Avengers film onto a stage one by one, Marvel opted for a live social media stunt during which the cast was announced via the performers' on-set chairs. Every 15 minutes, the camera panned to a new chair, revealing a new name. Among those confirmed for Avengers: Doomsday – out on 1 May 2026, the first part of a diptych with Avengers: Secret Wars – were franchise veterans like Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Anthony Mackie as Captain America, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, Letitia Wright as Shuri, Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Simu Liu as Shang-Chi and Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova. And the list continues – scroll down for the full roll call. Chris Hemsworth, Vanessa Kirby, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan AP Photo The biggest news was that stars from 20th Century Fox / Marvel's X-Men saga are coming back, with Patrick Stewart (Professor X), Ian McKellen (Magneto), Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler), Rebecca Romijn (Mystique), James Marsden (Cyclops) and Kelsey Grammer (Beast) all signing up for this new epic. As of that wasn't enough on the mutant front, Channing Tatum – who we last saw as Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine - was also there. Well, his chair was. Stewart, 84, played Professor X in the Fox's early 2000s X-Men films and had a cameo in 2022's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness , while 85-year-old Ian McKellen, played his arch-nemesis Magneto. Both actors were 'replaced' by younger actors in the 2010s X-Men series reboot, and their inclusion has caused serious fan speculation about the direction Avengers: Doomsday . The main theory is that it sets up an Avengers vs X-Men showdown in the multiverse, which will see various hero factions facing off in order to try to save their respective worlds. The whole exhausting chair watch – which recalled the misguided stunt HBO orchestrated when they invited fans to watch a live broadcast of a block of ice melting all to reveal the start date of the seventh season of the show - ended with Robert Downey Jr. Sitting on his chair, as the former Iron Man actor was announced as playing Doctor Doom last year . He will be the main threat in both Doomsday and Secret Wars , two of the tentpoles of Marvel's upcoming Phase 6 of its Marvel Cinematic Universe. Fans were taken by surprise by this unconventional casting announcement, with many expressing excitement, boredom and confusion. Indeed, some noted that the reveals were spoiling the upcoming Thunderbolts* before its release, given that we now know which characters will survive. 'Is there really any reason to watch Thunderbolts at this point?!?!' posted one fan on X, while another wrote: 'Exciting but you're spoiling Thunderbolts!!' Other fans cried foul when seeing that some of the biggest and most anticipated names were not among the names announced. There was no mention of Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), Brie Larson (Captain Marvel), Hugh Jackman (Wolverine), Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk) or even Tom Holland (Spider-Man). However, Marvel and Disney could be sitting on them for now, planning another cast reveal closer to release date, or even saving them for Secret Wars. Robert Downey Jr. revealed as Doctor Doom last year Getty Images Avengers: Doomsday is set for release in May 2026 and will be the first team-up movie since 2019's Avengers: Endgame , which became one of the highest grossing films of all time. A lot is riding on it, as Marvel has been struggling to recover its cultural buzz and box office mojo ever since Endgame . There have been the never-ending series which revealed a quantity over quality approach, a series of flops including Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania , The Marvels and the most recent outing, Captain America: Brave New World , as well as the Kang debacle which sent Marvel back to the drawing board . The return of the Russo Brothers to direct both Doomsday and Secret Wars (having previously helmed well received MCU projects like Captain America: Winter Soldier , Captain America: Civil War and both Infinity War and Endgame ), as well as Robert Downey Jr.'s mask swap, have been seen as signs pointing to a studio running out of ideas and desperate to get back to their zenith. Time will tell if they pull it off. ADVERTISEMENT The full casting announcement included: Chris Hemsworth (Thor) Vanessa Kirby (Invisible Woman) Anthony Mackie (Captain America) Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes) Letitia Wright (Black Panther) Paul Rudd (Ant-Man) Wyatt Russell (John Walker) Tenoch Huerta Mejía (Namor) Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The Thing) Simu Liu (Shang-Chi) Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova) Kelsey Grammer (Beast) Lewis Pullman (Sentry) Danny Ramirez (Falcon) Joseph Quinn (Human Torch) David Harbour (Red Guardian) Winston Duke (M'Baku) Hannah John-Kamen (Ghost) Tom Hiddleston (Loki) Patrick Stewart (Charles Xavier) Ian McKellen (Magneto) Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler) Rebecca Romijn (Mystique) James Marsden (Cyclops) Channing Tatum (Gambit) Pedro Pascal (Mister Fantastic) Robert Downey Jr. (Doctor Doom) Marvel's Thunderbolts* hits cinemas on 2 May; Phase 6 kicks off this year with The Fantastic Four: First Steps on 25 July. Doomsday is due out on 1 May 2026 and Secret Wars on 7 May 2027.
