Changing City: Work on new cable-stayed Byculla bridge progressing steadily, to be ready by March 2026

A key East-West connector in the island city, the 103-year-old Byculla Bridge is set to make way for a new cable-stayed bridge, with additional lanes and a selfie point. The new cable-stayed bridge in Byculla is proposed to be completed by March 2026, following which the next phase of works will commence. Built in a unique Y-shape, the Byculla Bridge has catered to traffic to and from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) since its construction in 1922. It passes over the Sandhurst Road and Byculla stations. However, after the old British-era structure was deemed unsafe by an IIT-Bombay audit, the administration took up cudgels to redevelop the bridge. In a memorandum signed in 2020, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) gave charge for the re-establishment of a new cable-stayed bridge over the existing one to the Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC) also known as MahaRail. Commencing from the Mahanagar Gas Station near the CSMT side, the bridge will have two arms — one of the arms will end near Deccan Merchant Cooperative Bank in Byculla East, while the second arm will end towards the headquarters of the Mumbai Fire Brigade in Byculla West. The total length of the new bridge — including the approach roads — is estimated to be 916 metres while it will have a height of 9.70 meters. Given the increased vehicular congestion, the new bridge will also have four additional lanes. While the present 'Y' bridge has six lanes, the new structure will have an augmented road width with eight lanes. To minimise the construction of piers, the civic body and MahaRail have incorporated designs of a cable-stayed structure over the railway tracks. Interestingly, the new bridge will also have one selfie point to enable the public to enjoy the views of the cityscape. Currently, the agencies are working on erecting the segments of the cable-stayed bridge in Byculla. An officer with the Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC) said the work was progressing steadily at Byculla without interrupting the traffic flow on the busy Eastern Express Highway. To prevent traffic disruptions, work on the bridge is being undertaken in phases. In the first step, the agencies have taken up work on constructing new bridges, which will run parallel to the existing structure. Officers said that after the work on the new bridge is completed, traffic from the old bridge will be routed onto the new structure. Following this, one span of the old Y-bridge structure will be dismantled and linked with the new cable-stayed bridge. According to officials, the first phase of the project is estimated to be completed by March 2026. Following this, the existing bridge is proposed to be pulled down and reconstructed over a timeframe of 280 days. The entire project is estimated to cost Rs 280 crore. 'The new Byculla ROB will consist of a total of 4 lanes, in lieu of the existing independent 2 lanes in both directions. Furthermore, the existing viaduct of the 'Y' Bridge & Anna Saheb Patil Flyover will be merged with the new iconic structure of the ROB for seamless movement. To ensure that there is no disruption to traffic, we have planned the work in phases. First, the MRIDC has planned to complete the new ROB and divert the traffic to the new proposed Cable Stayed Bridge. Once this is complete, we will then connect the existing 'Y' bridge along with the new four-lane ROB by dismantling one span of the existing Y Bridge,' an officer from MahaRail told The Indian Express.

Infra Crumbles: Slab of Rs65cr ROB Caves In, Roads Waterlogged

Nagpur: The first major rains of the monsoon exposed glaring faults in Nagpur's infrastructure, with the slab of a newly constructed railway overbridge (ROB) caving in at Kamptee, and widespread waterlogging across the city. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now While thousands of crores have been spent on developing roads, flyovers, and other infrastructure, heavy rains over the past three days laid bare the poor quality of work and planning. The most serious incident occurred at Yadav Nagar-Gawlipura in Kamptee, where the tar road of a newly built ROB caved in before the structure could even be inaugurated. A video showing the collapsed section quickly went viral on social media, triggering outrage and raising questions over the integrity of public infrastructure projects. T he ROB was constructed by the special projects division of the state public works department (PWD). Parag Themke, executive engineer of PWD, said, "The flyover received administrative approval of Rs65 crore. Abhi Engineering bagged the Rs38 crore civil tender for the project. I learnt about the incident and have directed the contractor to give me a detailed report about the issue and carry out repair work soon." The incident raised red flags about not only the quality of construction but also the level of supervision and accountability in such high-value projects. Meanwhile, TOI visited spots across the city on Wednesday and found several arterial and internal roads under knee-deep water. South Nagpur, Hudkeshwar, South-West Nagpur, East Nagpur, and even parts of rural Besa-Pipla witnessed major waterlogging, rendering many areas inaccessible and exposing citizens to danger. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "The road was concretised in my area recently and its height was raised, which led to water flooding in my home. Many other roads, including big ones, which were recently concretised, have also been waterlogged. This raised serious concerns about the quality of work govt agencies are doing," said Mukul Dubey, a resident of Hudkeshwar. In several areas, newly built roads failed to drain rainwater effectively, pointing to design flaws in elevation and drainage. Locals reported repeated complaints to civic authorities, but little was done to fix the systemic problems. Currently, Nagpur's infrastructure projects are being handled by a host of agencies, including Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT), public works department (PWD), National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), and MahaRail. While MahaRail and NHAI are working on ROBs, RUBs, and highway projects, the rest are involved in road concretisation across the city. The situation renewed public anger and concern over how public money is being utilised. Despite tall claims of city development, Nagpur's infrastructure seems to be crumbling with the very first test of the monsoon. Box: PWD's Pump and Sump Arrangement at Padole Sq Fails The World Bank division of PWD recently built a dedicated pump house to resolve long-standing waterlogging issues on Inner Ring Road between Raje Sambhaji Nagar Square and Padole Hospital. However, the measure once again failed as heavy waterlogging was reported on Wednesday, forcing authorities to close the stretch for traffic. Motorists were forced to endure two-way traffic on a single side of the road, leading to traffic snarls.

Elevated Rotary Road Being Explored For Medical Square: Gadkari

1 2 3 4 Nagpur: An ambitious project to alleviate traffic woes at the busy Medical Square is being contemplated by Union minister Nitin Gadkari . The Nagpur MP on Thursday said he is ideating upon a project to build an elevated rotary road to help ease the traffic flow. In a brief statement about it, Gadkari said, "At Ashok Chowk, we are planning to construct a signal-less square, like a roundabout rotary. Another thing I have in mind is, Medical Square. To build an elevated road (rotary) there." The Union minister clarified that these are in the conceptualization stage. Regarding the Liberty Square flyover, Gadkari said that the design is faulty, but it will be rectified. "I have already prepared a proposal for Rs34 crore and it has been sent for clearance. A new design has been readied for it," said Gadkari, while addressing the media on Thursday. The flyover has three landings, one at Katol Road, one at Mankapur and one between LIC Square and RBI Square. It's the landing at the latter section which is being redesigned, and it's likely that another landing might connect on the road going towards LIC Square. At this point Gadkari even called his official from the sidelines and enquired about the status of that file. After speaking with the official, Gadkari said "Work will start soon and the problem will be solved. Giving an update on other flyovers of the city, Gadkari first spoke about the Kadbi Chowk flyover going towards Mominpura. "All permissions have been taken and the issue (for delay) is due to encroachment at Mominpura. We have given the work to MahaRail and this will benefit everyone because directly from Mominpura you can connect to Kamptee Road." About the Pachpaoli flyover, Gadkari said, "For the flyover from Kamal Talkies, we are using the latest technology from Malayasia for construction. At Kamal Chowk, we will build a huge market where all vendors will get space." He added that a lot of flyovers have been built or approved for Nagpur, which will ultimately provide succour for traffic movement. In East Nagpur, which has got many flyover projects, Gadkari joked that there is now no space remaining. "MLA Krishna Khopde has got so many projects approved that no space is left vacant. I told him that only a 2m wide lane remains in one of the localities, and maybe we should construct one flyover here too," said Gadkari.
