Villa Mahal review: you'll struggle to find a more relaxing Turkey hotel

If there's a more relaxing place to be in Kalkan than curled up on one of the oversize beanbags on the Mahal's leafy, waterfront terrace, you'd struggle to find it. The former Greek fishing village may have ballooned in size over the years, but it's still one of Turkey's most romantic resorts, and Villa Mahal is the perfect couple's retreat. Tucked between olive, fig and frangipani trees on the eastern side of Kalkan Bay, the hotel's 13 suites and four villas sit above a cluster of beach platforms, hewn from local stone and stitched into the hillside. An ideal counterpoint to the hustle and buzz of the Old Town, the four palatial villas are open to families of all ages. Still, everywhere else the 12-and-over rule creates a blissfully peaceful vibe, from cocktails on the roof terrace to lazy days at the Beach Club — with golf carts available to whip guests around the estate, if the steps feel a little too much. Service, meanwhile, is low-key and discreet, but staff are always on hand and have great tips about the local area. This article contains affiliate links that will earn us revenue Score 8/10Clean, crisp and simple, Villa Mahal's 13 rooms are carefully designed so that nothing detracts from the vast swathe of the cerulean sea that shimmers beyond every window, terrace and private pool. The all-white decor is kept from feeling monastic with pops of colour — muted turquoise drapes, warm scarlet scatter cushions — while the cocoon-like bathrooms come with blond-wood fittings, rainfall showers and some with full-sized baths. For a real sense of escape, the four villas offer all of the hotel's services and benefits with a sense of absolute privacy; each sleeps up to six and has a private infinity pool. Score 9/10Days begin with a traditional Turkish breakfast — local eggs and honey, fresh fruit, juice and yoghurt — taken on the roof terrace, with blistering views across the bay (this is also the spot for a sundowner; the sunsets are spectacular). Lunch — salads and light meze dishes — is taken at the Beach Club, which at night turns into a chic waterfront restaurant, with some tables set right by the water's edge. The menu ranges from Turkish classics — succulent fish kebabs, chargrilled octopus or crispy Turkish pide (long, hand-stretched pizzas) — to upscale Mediterranean dishes: beef carpaccio with local olive oil or rich, tomato-baked prawns. Reservations are essential as, with live music on some evenings,it's as popular with non-residents as guests. • Discover our full guide to Turkey• Best hotels with water parks in Turkey Score 9/10Most days revolve around the Beach Club; each individual platform has its own loungers and parasol, creating a delightfully private feel, with some set on decking directly above the water. The staff can arrange water sports including paddleboarding and kayaking, while the free shuttle boat to Kalkan's pretty harbour offers a relaxing way to travel back and forth to the Old Town. Alfresco massages can be arranged, but for the ultimate romantic treat, a fully crewed yacht offers day trips to Kalkan's nearby islands and bays, or overnight jaunts to the ancient sunken city of Kekova and the Greek island of Meis. Score 8/10Set in the quiet neighbourhood of Kisler Bay, the Old Town is a five-minute taxi ride, or 20-minute walk along a relatively new footpath, which does have some steep stretches. With no takers, controversial SE Delhi bungalow to turn guest house

The controversial bungalow allegedly constructed in 2021 by a former top Delhi Jal Board official after demolishing a 15th-century monument in south east Delhi's Jal Vihar near Lajpat Nagar is now likely to be converted into a guest house, senior government functionaries confirmed. The bungalow in Jal Vihar, which is likely to be converted into a guest house (HT Archive) The bungalow has been lying vacant since September 2023. In April that year, it had emerged that the monument was allegedly demolished by the then DJB chief executive officer Udit Prakash Rai to build a new government accommodation for himself. A senior government functionary said that the bungalow has been offered to multiple senior officials but no one has been willing to use it as an accommodation 'due the controversy associated with it'. 'We are now planning to use it as a guest house so that the building is utilised,' the official cited aboveadded. Water minister Parvesh Verma also confirmed to HT that plans for the same are afoot. Officials, however, said that since the plot is marked only for residential use, its land use will have to be changed if it is converted into any other facility. Last year, DJB officials had floated the idea of converting the house into a laboratory cum training centre. The accommodation was at the centre of controversy in April 2023 after the Directorate of Vigilance issued a show cause notice to Prakash for allegedly razing the monument to construct a house for himself. The vigilance department said there was a 'monument' and a 'gateway' at this property. The monument also featured in the Archaeological Survey of India's 'List of Muhammadan and Hindu Monuments, Vol. IV' and is referred to as a 'Mahal'. It was built during the Sayyid rule in Delhi in 1418. The notice said that Rai was responsible for the demolition, violating residential accommodation rules. It added that while Rai was entitled to a type V government housing, the built-up area of the house replacing the monument was 700 sqm, which exceeded the prescribed area of 403 sqm. Nearly ₹4 crore was spent on building the house, the department said. On July 31, 2023, the Union home affairs ministry suspended Rai and asked him to vacate the house. Rai and his family left in September 2023, and the house has been vacant since then. A government functionary said that senior officers have been reluctant to take it up as an accommodation. '...The property still belongs to no one wants to be associated with the controversy.'

Gangster's nephew killed: Third killing by Nandu gang in three months, all those dead had links with Manjit Mahal

On June 5, Manjeet Mahal, the jailed strongman from Najafgarh's Mitraon village, came out of Tihar Jail on a day-long custody parole. It was his daughter's wedding, and he was being escorted to the venue. Tagging along was Deepak Thakran (30), his nephew. Police officers now say this meeting with Mahal had enraged gangster Kapil Sangwan alias Nandu – currently based in London – and led to Deepak's killing on Friday morning when he was out on a morning walk in the fields of Thakran village in Outer Delhi with his seven-year-old daughter. This was allegedly the third such killing orchestrated by the Nandu gang in the last three months, all because all three deceased were seen hobnobbing with Mahal or were suspected of being in an alliance with him, said police. In April 2025, a businessman was killed in his Fortuner, allegedly by Sangwan's henchman, over the suspicion that the deceased was funding Mahal's gang. On June 2, Sonepat hotelier Arun Putra Satyawan (25) was gunned by multiple bike-borne shooters in Kharkhari. The police said they allegedly killed Satyawan at Sangwan's behest, as the deceased had given a statement in court in favour of Lucky, Mahal's jailed henchman. With the shooters on the loose, police officers said that they could also be involved in Deepak's killing. The rivalry has its roots in 2015, when a close aide of Mahal, Nafe alias Mantri, lent some money to Sangwan's brother-in-law, Sunil alias Doctor. Sunil was unable to pay Nafe back, and was killed on December 20. Enraged, Sangwan attacked Nafe's house on December 21 and shot dead his father, Harikishan Singh. The police said that Sangwan has since held a grudge, allegedly eliminating people who have any kind of link with Mahal. 'We won't kill you. We will make you shed tears of blood,' a purported Instagram account of Sangwan had posted on Friday, while claiming that the gang was responsible for Deepak's killing. On January 29, 2017, a year after Mahal was arrested by the Delhi Police for the murder of MLA Bharat Singh, his father, Shri Kishan (71), was shot dead at Mitraon village when he was out to buy vegetables. In 2020, even after Sangwan fled to the UK via Dubai on a fake visa after his parole expired and he was slapped with the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), the police said his lust for revenge continued. In 2021, a gunman of the Nandu gang, Dhankar, was arrested for allegedly plotting Mahal's courtroom assassination. Last February, Haryana INLD chief Nafe Singh Rathee was killed allegedly by the Nandu gang after photographs of him meeting Mahal cropped up online. In December 2024, the Nandu gang allegedly also executed two members of the Mahal gang in Panchkula, said police. With three killings already executed by the Nandu gang in the last three months, a police officer said, 'It seems he is targeting family members and associates, though he can take out Mahal directly… They had previously tried to kill Mahal, but now they are just executing his family members. They want him to watch everything.' DCP (Outer North) Hareshwar Swami said that police personnel are stationed near Deepak's house in Thakran, guarding the village, as the killers – yet to be identified – are still on the loose. 'We are still trying to verify the identity of the shooters and whether they have been involved in any other incident,' he added.
