Happy Gilmore 2: Tragic reason behind sequel's major ‘rewrite'

Don't miss out on the headlines from New Movies. Followed categories will be added to My News. The long-awaited sequel to cult comedy Happy Gilmore is finally here, almost thirty years after the original was released. It's the moment fans have been desperately waiting for, but the version of Happy Gilmore 2 premiering on Netflix this Friday will look different from what was initially planned – and for a tragic reason. Speaking to ahead of its release, Happy Gilmore co-creator and star Adam Sandler revealed that Carl Weathers, who played Chubbs Peterson ('it's all in the hips!'), had been 'so excited' to once again play a significant role. Sadly, Weathers died at the age of 74 last February, prior to filming getting underway. As a result, Sandler and co-writer Tim Herlihy were forced to make last-minute adjustments to the story while grieving their friend. 'We had to rewrite all that stuff and try to make a little tribute to him,' Sandler explained. 'He was such a good person, and was so excited about it.' He went on to describe their 'very close' friendship, formed on the set of the first Happy Gilmore film. 'We'd see each other a lot, we all miss hanging out with him. He was such a great presence … and not just in the film but during the shoot,' Sandler said. 'We all loved him and listened to everything he had to say.' Carl Weathers had to be written out of the sequel after his tragic death. Picture: Netflix Details around the plot of the highly-anticipated sequel have been tightly wrapped for years, but what fans do know is that 30 years after winning his first Tour Championship, Happy is forced out of retirement and back into the sport to pay for his daughter's expensive ballet school in France. Of course, hilarity – and chaos – ensues. Alongside Sandler, Julie Bowen makes her return as Virginia Venit, as well as original golf villain, Shooter McGavin (Chris McDonald). Alongside those core three comes a truly staggering line-up of celebrity cameos. Eminem, Bad Bunny, Post Malone, Travis Kelce, and just about every famous golfer on the planet turns up to join Happy's adventures in the next chapter, but Sandler revealed there was one person in particular who was 'over the moon' to be chosen. Critically-acclaimed Maid actress Margaret Qualley reportedly begged to be part of the sequel, and once she got on set, really gave it her all. 'It was so hysterical. In the movie she shot for four or five days and it was so nice with her, she's such a fun spirit – she's so hysterical,' he recalled. Qualley is one of the many, many celebrities who appear in Happy Gilmore 2. Picture: Netflix Sandler described her as 'hysterical'. Picture: Netflix In fact, all these years on from the release of the smash hit original in 1996, when word spread around Hollywood that a follow-up was in the works, the calls to Sandler and his team started to come in thick and fast. 'It's funny, I would hear all over the place that 'so-and-so is excited, or would do something [in the movie], and then right when I'd hear that, I'd call [Herlihy] and say 'so-and-so said they want to do it, let's try and come up with something good',' Sandler explained. Bad Bunny also pops up alongside Happy. Picture: Netflix … as does Travis Kelce. Picture: Netflix Without giving anything away, there's a fairly dramatic development with Happy's wife, Virginia, right at the start – but Bowen told she immediately knew it was the right way to tell the story. 'I was fully on board, I loved it,' the Modern Family star said. Fans will be relieved to know that its Herlihy and Sandler at the creative helm of Happy Gilmore 2, given their success writing together for the first instalment. That partnership brought with it some of the most-quoted cinematic lines of all time ('I eat pieces of s**t like you for breakfast!', anyone?) – many of which were delivered by Shooter. Golfing villain Chris McDonald reprises his role as Shooter McGavin. Picture: Netflix Ahead of his character's reprisal, McDonald still can't decide which of his many, many quips is the most iconic, but he credits all the comedy to Sandler. 'It's all him,' he told nodding at his co-star and laughing as he recalled his top picks. 'I've got so many of them! 'Congratulations, murderer!' … 'Go back to your shanties' …[or] 'I think I'm turning that into my trophy room'.' Meanwhile, with Happy Gilmore finally back for the next chapter, Sandler confirmed he'd consider bringing back more of his cult characters – on one condition. 'If [Bowen and McDonald] put on some weird costumes [and appear in them], I'll do it … that would be the one thing holding me back,' he said, prompting his co-stars to immediately offer suggestions. 'I'll be The Water Boy!' Bowen promised, with McDonald adding: 'I'm going to be your Zohan trainer.' Watch this space. Happy Gilmore 2 will be available to stream on Netflix from July 25. Joe and Padma from Ginny & Georgia are real-life siblings: Here are subtle nods from the Netflix show that you may have missed

Now that Ginny & Georgia season 3 has officially become a new obsession after its Netflix premiere on June 5, fans have been obsessed with conspiracy theories and behind-the-scenes lore that make Wellsbury even more chaotic. The latest discovery to shake the fandom is that Joe and Padma, who both work at Blue Farm Café, are real-life siblings. Yes, seriously. Raymond and Rebecca Ablack, who play Joe and Padma, respectively, are brother and sister in real life. And once you know that, it's kind of wild how obvious it feels, given the series has been dropping subtle nods to their real-life equation. Raymond and Rebecca had one scene together at first In season 1, Joe and Padma share barely any screentime. You could watch the whole season and never realize there's a family connection there. But once season 2 rolls around and Padma starts working at Blue Farm with Ginny, the sibling duo appears together more often. Suddenly, she and Joe are sharing the same space, and their resemblance starts to jump out at viewers episode by episode. Wait…. Joe (Raymond Ablack) & Padma (Rebecca Ablack) are real life siblings… WTFFFFFFF #ginnyandgeorgia When writers teased their real-life bond on the series To make things even better, the writers threw in a cheeky nod to their real-life relationship. There's a scene in season 2 where Joe asks Padma and Ginny to close up the café for the night so he can head out on a date. Ginny, being Ginny, jokes, 'OK, but is Joe hot?' Padma immediately responds, 'Oh, he's like a dorky older brother.' And that's not just banter; it's also an inside joke. In real life, Raymond is 11 years older than Rebecca. So yeah, the 'older brother' line hits different when you realize she literally is his younger sister who probably finds him 'dorky,' even though the internet would like to disagree. Joe is in the spotlight for all the right (and messy) reasons in Season 3 Joe's storyline has become one of the most talked-about parts of Ginny and Georgia Season 3. From his brief romance with Cynthia to his never-quite-over feelings for Georgia, fans are fully convinced something big is coming. Some are even revisiting the theory that Joe might be the father of Georgia's baby. He's soft, patient, and clearly still carrying feelings he never really had the chance to explore. And with the way he looks at Georgia in season 3? Let's just say the unresolved tension is not subtle. Meanwhile, Padma is now dating Ginny's ex, Hunter, played by Mason Temple, but Ginny's pretty chill about the whole thing, as Marcus is the ex she's still hung up on. First on-screen project together Despite both having been in the acting world for years, Ginny & Georgia is the first time Raymond and Rebecca Ablack have ever appeared on-screen together. Raymond, now 33, has a long list of credits, including Degrassi: The Next Generation, Maid, Narcos, and Love in the Villa. Rebecca, 22, has appeared in Luckiest Girl Alive, Let It Snow, The Good Karma Hospital, and the recently released movie, Fear Street: The Prom Queen. After season 1 came out, Raymond shared some behind-the-scenes photos of him and Rebecca on Instagram and wrote, 'It's not lost on me how impossible the odds were and how lucky I was to have shared a dream with my sister.' After season 2, Netflix's official account couldn't resist joining the conversation. 'Ginny & Georgia needs more Joe & Padma scenes because it's too cute seeing real-life siblings Raymond & Rebecca Ablack on-screen together!' they tweeted. And honestly, they're not wrong. Ginny & Georgia needs more Joe & Padma scenes because it's too cute seeing real-life siblings Raymond & Rebecca Ablack on-screen together! Their scenes may be limited, but every time they interact now, it feels like a fun little Easter egg. Knowing they're family in real life just adds another layer to the show that fans can't get enough of. Will the Ablack siblings return for Ginny and Georgia season 4? With season 3 finally out and so many storylines still hanging in the air, fans are already hoping to see more of Joe and Padma in the next chapter. Whether Joe and Georgia finally confront their feelings or Padma's new romance with Hunter causes a little more drama, there's definitely space for these two to shine even more.

Julianne Moore ‘Just Wrapped' Jesse Eisenberg's Upcoming A24 Musical: ‘We're All Singing in It'

Julianne Moore celebrated the premiere of her next project, 'Sirens' on Netflix, on Tuesday, May 20 at the Plaza Hotel in New York City. The limited series features Moore alongside Meghann Fahy, Milly Alcock, Kevin Bacon, and Glenn Howerton in the Margot Robbie-produced project from 'Maid' creator Molly Smith Metzler. On the carpet, IndieWire caught up with Moore about Jesse Eisenberg's upcoming A24 musical film. As for what she can tease, Moore told us that she will indeed be showing off her vocal chops, a follow-up to singing a little bit in 2021's 'Dear Evan Hansen': 'Yes, I am. I'm singing. We're all singing in it,' she said. More from IndieWire 'Resurrection' Review: Is This an Endurance Test or Imaginative, Boundary-Defying Cinema? You Decide! 'Elden Ring' Movie in the Works from Director Alex Garland at A24 'Jesse Eisenberg is just the most extraordinary person,' she continued. 'He's so incredibly creative. I feel so fortunate to be able to work with him. This is very different, but I think that he can have sort of a satirical worldview. At the end of the day, he's got so much feeling. We're all very excited about it. I actually just wrapped it last week, last Thursday.' Eisenberg's film follows a shy woman who is unexpectedly cast in a community theater musical production, going to extremes as she loses herself in the role. It is an original comedy starring Moore and Paul Giamatti, with Eisenberg also taking on a role in the film. Additionally, the cast includes Halle Bailey, Havana Rose Liu, Bernadette Peters, Eldar Isgandarov, Bonnie Milligan, Colton Ryan, Lilli Cooper, and Maulik Pancholy. One of Moore's frequent collaborators, Todd Haynes, is in the midst of working on his next project. 'We're very excitedly moving forward on this adaptation of Hernan Diaz's 'Trust,'' he told The Hollywood Reporter in February. 'That's what I'm focusing on right now with Kate Winslet at HBO.' As for whether Moore knows anything about Haynes' project, she told us that she has 'no idea. I texted with him not too long ago. I mean, he's just an amazing person, a truly gifted artist, and I'll be in anything he asks me to be in.' 'Sirens' showrunner Metzler previously was a writer on 'Shameless,' and told IndieWire that being a playwright is very 'similar' to TV writing, as both processes are 'very, very collaborative.' Metzler said, 'When you're playwriting you're usually with the whole team, with someone designing the set and the director and actors and dramaturg. You're all making this thing together, but the person who has to speak for the vision of the show is usually the playwright and you just are very empowered. Your relationship with your director is a true partnership. And is a writer's medium, playwriting. That's what's similar about it is TV is a writer's medium.' 'Sirens' premieres May 22 on Netflix. Andie MacDowell Calls Out Double Standards Around Aging

Andie MacDowell was 31 years old when she landed her breakout role in the 1989 movie Sex, Lies, and Videotape, with the star going on to have a glittering acting career with other huge films including Groundhog Day, and Four Weddings And A Funeral. And Andie has certainly switched up the kinds of characters she plays in recent years. In 2021, she played her real-life daughter Margaret Qualley's eccentric onscreen mom in the Netflix series Maid, and she has played grandmother Del in the fantasy show The Way Home since 2023. Now, a two-year-old interview with Andie has resurfaced on social media, with the star being praised for how she articulately called out the double standards that male and female actors face as they age. Speaking at Cannes in 2023, Andie — who was 65 years old at the time — explained that men are 'allowed to get older' in the industry, whereas women see their job offers dry up. 'Why do we have this expectation for women to not age? You wouldn't question Hugh Grant or George Clooney!' she begins in the resurfaced clip. 'I feel debonair. I'm sorry, I do. I feel that. I feel just like a man, I do. I feel fabulous.' 'Why have men been glorified as they age? I've always talked about this, and I think it really is a psychological thing we have imprinted in us,' Andie went on, before referencing her gray hair. 'If you want me to look different, I can wear a wig. But I'm not coloring my hair — it took me three years for my hair to grow out. I'm not going to color it!' Andie then revealed that while she struggled to book roles in her 40s, things took another turn as she got older. She said: 'I'm more appreciated now… We have this idea that men age and get sexy and women don't, and they don't know what to do with you.' 'So as soon as a man turns 40, they just put him with a younger woman,' she continued. 'And then, psychologically, we give them this power. We think that they are sexy because they've got this younger woman. We give them this power, but we don't do the same thing for a woman. We go: 'Woah! Well, what do we do with her?'''Unless she's very, very powerful in Hollywood,' Andie then clarified. 'Then it's different. But for the majority of women, it's a big struggle. And then we turn 60 and we get to play great characters!' When this video was shared to a popular Reddit forum, people were quick to share their agreement with Andie's no-nonsense remarks. One popular comment reads: "propaganda I'm not falling for: 'men age like fine wine.'" 'Every man acts like they're automatically going to look like Pedro Pascal when they're fifty when that is absolutely not the case. Meanwhile I literally see really good looking women in their fifties all the time,' somebody else claimed. 'This is what always rubs me the wrong way about the whole Silver Fox hype and how men just aging decently is way more gushed over and praised than the women who do the same, and how they're allowed to age and not take care of their skin but older women that get work done are constantly clowned on,' one more wrote.'It's wild how men get 'distinguished' and women get 'washed up,'' another observed. While somebody else concluded: 'Loveeee this and love her whole vibe. If I look half as good as her as I get older I'd be chuffed." What do you make of Andie's resurfaced comments?
