Wagga preview: Racing legends chasing Riverina double with equine siblings
CHAMPION jockey, now Riverina based trainer, Danny Beasley can present Hall of Fame legend Neville Begg with two wins inside the space of 45 minutes at Wagga on Monday. Granted, Begg and Beasley have won bigger races than today's back-to-back Wagga Maidens on offer but a win to either horse would be special for both. More so perhaps for Begg who bred the pair, namely the unraced Serenading and her year-older sibling Donegal Bay. The Begg-Beasley duo are the second and third foals respectively out of Fastnet Rock mare Rock And Rose whose sole win came at Sale, over 1717m, in January 2017. Donegal Bay, a son of Star Witness, is the mare's only foal to race prior to today; with an overall record of four placings from seven starts. The most recent two of those have been for Beasley, and both at Albury. His barnstorming Beasley-debut (second) was enough to see him sent out a prohibitive $1.40 favourite in another Bordertown maiden, and while costly for his backers, he lost no love so far as Beasley is concerned. 'He had no luck the other day,'' Beasley said. 'There was one that nearly fell in front of him and barrier one was always going to be not ideal for him because he gets back. 'He's a big horse and he needs a bit of room when he is galloping. It was pretty much a forgive run. 'I'd just love to win a race with the horse and then give him a break because I think he has got a lot more ability than what his record is showing.' Two-year-old Serenading is even more of a Begg-bred than her big brother. Not only does Begg own her mother, he bred and raced her father, namely Blue Diamond winner and emerging young sire, Written By. Serenading hasn't been sighted in public view since her low-key yet pleasing trial at home on Australia Day. 'She wasn't out there to do too much, it was an education, and I had Brodie Loy on her and I thought he did a wonderful job on her,'' Beasley explained. 'He gave her a beautiful trial and she learnt a lot from it. 'She is a really big filly that wasn't ready so we put her out and gave her a break and she's come back and done everything right so far. 'The 1000m will be okay on the Heavy ground because she probably wants it a little bit further.' And while Serenading is, on face value, bred for speed, she does possess more than her share of classic blood. Begg and Beasley would clearly love Serenading to live up to the deeds of her close family member, Serenade Rose. Trained by Lee Freedman, Serenade Rose was the dominant classic filly of her era. Beasley can testify to that; he was on fillies far behind Serenade at the finish of both the VRC Oaks and AJC Oaks. 'She was a great filly,'' Beasley recalled. 'Actually Mr Begg spoke in depth about the pedigree of these two horses and although Donegal Bay has a few little issues that would restrict him from getting out in trip, the big filly Serenading, she does give you every indication she will get out over more ground as she gets older. 'So Mr Begg has said to me, don't be afraid to nominate her for a few of those staying fillies race because you never know what happens.'

ENG vs IND, 2nd Test Day 1: Ball-by-ball updates from Edgbaston
17:48 IST:Heading into the second session, both teams have plenty to play for. India, now at 98/2, and will look to bat deep and give themselves a solid first-innings platform, with Jaiswal already set and looking fluent. His wicket holds the key. England, on the flip side, will feel they've clawed their way back with that late wicket and will hope that the bowlers are able to battle through as the Sun is now out and shining brightly. The pitch looks on the slower side, but the ball is still relatively fresh, and they'll want to make the most of it before it goes soft. A crucial session awaits, which will start at 6.10 pm IST (12.40 pm GMT), so don't go anywhere. 17:44 IST:On the bowling front, Chris Woakes was the standout early on, exploiting every bit of movement in the air and off the seam. He bowled with rhythm and beat the bat multiple times, bowling out four Maidens. Though he was denied twice by Umpires' calls on LBWs, he got a big wicket of Rahul. Carse did get rewarded late in the session when Nair edged him. Ben Stokes and Josh Tongue tried unsettling Jaiswal with a few sharp bouncers before lunch, but the left-hander held his nerve and countered with some authoritative strokes. Overall, England bowled good in patches but lacked consistency after the first hour, allowing India to rebuild. 17:42 IST:Karun Nair, coming in at No. 3, brought with him intent and calmness. He cracked a couple of early boundaries that helped release pressure, and soon, he was rotating strike with ease. Alongside Jaiswal, he formed a 50-run stand in just 53 balls, putting England's bowlers on the back foot after their tight start. Jaiswal brought up a classy half-century off just 59 balls, peppered with 10 boundaries, and oozed confidence with his strokeplay, even against the short-pitched stuff. But just as it looked like India would walk away owning the session completely, Karun got a lovely delivery to play and he edged it to the slips, departing for a fluent 31. It came right at the stroke of Lunch, tilting the mood slightly. 17:40 IST:India had a quiet start with the bat, playing carefully in testing conditions. KL Rahul was overly cautious, and his innings lasted 26 balls for just 2 runs before he was bowled, dragging one back onto his stumps off Chris Woakes. The ball was doing a bit, and it needed grit in the first hour. Jaiswal, however, looked more proactive. He left smartly, waited for width, and played some gorgeous strokes through the off-side whenever the bowlers erred. At 15/1 after nearly nine overs, the innings looked stagnant, but the shift came once Jaiswal started to put the pressure back on the bowlers, forcing them to alter their lengths. 17:40 IST:The opening session of Day 1 in this much-anticipated 2nd Test between England and India had a bit of everything from patience to momentum swing. India reached 98/2 in 25 overs, making it a session that both teams can walk away from with mixed feelings. Yashasvi Jaiswal played with a blend of caution and confidence, while Karun Nair looked much more assured after a scratchy first Test. An 80-run partnership between them gave India momentum, but a late wicket just before Lunch, with Nair falling for 31, pulled things back slightly for the visitors. Six years for Doncaster sex offender who shared abuse images
A sex offender who distributed graphic images of child abuse online has been jailed for six Maidens, from Doncaster, was communicating online with an adult and discussed committing offences against their 10-year-old child, South Yorkshire Police 44, of Brabbs Avenue, sent explicit images to the profile between 3 September 2024 and 3 October Sheffield Crown Court on Wednesday, he was jailed after admitting offences including arranging or facilitating the commission of a sexual offence against a child under 13. 'Vile offences' Maidens sent a number of indecent videos to the profile, showing victims as young as 11 months old being abused, police searched his home in October last year after receiving information he had been involved in online child sex also admitted attempting to cause a child to look at an image of sexual activity and two counts of distributing indecent images of sentencing, Judge Rachael Harrison noted Maidens' offending only stopped after he was arrested, tell him: "You are, by any view, dangerous."Sam Musgrove, lead investigating officer, described Maidens' offences as "vile" and noted he refused to give any comment in his police interview."We will act on intelligence to bring offenders to justice and protect children online," she was jailed for six years with an extended licence period of four years.
