Celtics sign guard who once led D-I in steals per game with 3.1

The Boston Celtics have added some fast hands to the organization. On Monday, Boston agreed with Hayden Gray on an Exhibit 10 contract. It's a deal that incentivizes Gray to join the Celtics' G League team (Maine) if he is cut from the NBA roster. Gray's calling card is his defense. In his final season at UC San Diego, the 6-foot-4 guard averaged 3.1 steals per game. That was best in Division I. He also put up 11.2 points, 3.3 assists and 3.1 rebounds per game. He shot it at 41.8% from 3-point range. Gray played in one Summer League game in Vegas for the Celtics, scoring seven points with two assists and two steals in 20 minutes. 'I've got pretty good anticipation, reading the ball handler's eyes, knowing where they want to go with it,' Gray said. 'I take pride in defense. A lot of teams are really focusing on creating more possessions, and I think I can do that by causing turnovers and also just being a floor general, handling the ball, and setting the table for everyone.' The modern NBA is all about shooting. Maybe that'll be enough to allow Gray to stick around. Boston Celtics reportedly signing guard Hayden Gray to Maine Celtics

The Boston Celtics are reportedly signing guard Hayden Gray to the roster of the Maine Celtics after a promising stint with the Sin City Celtics in the NBA's 2025 Las Vegas Summer League, per Celtics Blog's Noa Dalzell. Gray last played for the University of California, San Diego as he led the NCAA last season in steals with 3.1 per game to go along with 11.2 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game. He likely secured a spot with the Celtics' G League development squad on the strength of his defensive play with the Summer Celtics in Vegas, but also showed flashes of a more complete player. It was just one performance, but in it, the San Diego, California native put up 7 points, 2 rebounds, and as many assists and steals plus a block off the bench in 20 minutes of playing time. Gray shot 3-of-4 from the floor overall, and 1-of-2 from beyond the arc, with no trips to the free throw line in his limited run. "I've pretty good anticipation, reading the ball handler's eyes, knowing where they want to go with it," said Gray to Dalzell earlier this week. "I take pride in defense. A lot of teams are really focusing on creating more possessions, and I think I can do that by causing turnovers and also just being a floor general, handling the ball, and setting the table for everyone." If he can get anywhere close to the 39.5% from deep that he shot in his two seasons in college at the NBA level, we might be seeing Gray outgrow Maine. And while it is far more likely he will end up on another NBA roster or in another league, he is an intriguing talent to have in Boston's G League development pipeline. Missouri basketball alum Phil Pressey named head coach of NBA G League's Maine Celtics

Phil Pressey is moving up the coaching ranks. The former Missouri basketball star and graduate assistant was officially named the head coach of Maine Celtics, the G League affiliate of the Boston Celtics, on Wednesday, July 2, per a news release from the team. Advertisement 'I'd like to thank (Boston Celtics general manager) Brad Stevens, (Boston head coach) Joe Mazzulla and the entire Celtics organization for believing in me and giving me a chance to grow, lead, and develop,' Pressey said in a news release. 'I'm grateful for the opportunity and I will give my all to this team. The community of Portland is amazing, and I remember my time as a player was unforgettable at the Expo. My goal is to instill winning habits into every player who suits up for the Maine Celtics.' Pressey, 34, has spent significant time with the Celtics organization over the past 12 years. He signed as an undrafted free agent with Boston in 2013 and went on to make 125 appearances for the Celtics over the next two seasons. He also appeared for the then-Maine Red Claws — now the Maine Celtics — in some G League appearances as a player. Advertisement After spending a season as a graduate assistant on Mizzou head coach Dennis Gates' first staff in 2022-23, he was hired as an assistant coach for the Boston Celtics in June 2023. In his first season as an assistant, the Celtics went on to beat the Dallas Mavericks in the 2024 NBA Finals. 'Phil is a dedicated coach who has been instrumental in our player development over the last two seasons,' Mazzulla said in a news release. 'I am looking forward to seeing him grow as a coach and leader. He shows great energy and a willingness to learn. His personality and communication will be a gift to his players.' Missouri's Phil Pressey, 1, drives the ball during the team's first practice in the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, TN, on Wednesday, March 13, 2013. Pressey spent three seasons as a player with Mizzou from 2010-13. The former point guard still holds Mizzou's career (580), season (240) and single-game (19) assists records. He is tied with Anthony Peeler for Mizzou's career-steals record (196). Tamar Bates signed a two-way contract with the Denver Nuggets and their G League affiliate, the Grand Rapids Gold. Caleb Grill signed as an undrafted free agent with the Chicago Bulls and will be competing for a spot on either that roster or on their G League affiliate, the Windy City Bulls. What we want to see from the Sin City Celtics in Las Vegas Summer League

The Boston Celtics are headed to Nevada to take part in the NBA's 2025 Las Vegas Summer League, with two players from the team's regular roster, three incoming rookies, a former two way player who might return in that role, and eight unsigned prospedcts hoping to latch on with either the Maine Celtics at the G League level or some other roster in another league. What should we be watching for from the Sin City Celtics? What roles do we think each of the 14 players from the Summer Celtics will end up holding in the 2025-26 season? And do we think there is a sleeper prospect among them that Boston's front office might want to consider signing? The hosts of "Havlicek Stole the Pod" took some time this week to sit down with Forbes Boston beat writer Bobby Krivitsky to try to answer all of the above questions, as well as what the whole summer series of exhibitions is for in the first place.
