Rats blamed for trader's missing liquor supply
Compiled by FAZLEENA AZIZ, C. ARUNO and R. ARAVINTHAN ALCOHOL traders are blaming rats for drinking the liquor from 802 bottles as authorities conduct an audit of liquor stocks in India, Makkal Osai reported. In Dhanbad city, traders who failed to account for the bottles of Indian-made foreign liquor, claimed that rats had chewed through the bottle caps and drank the alcohol. However, excise officials dismissed the claims as nonsense and said the traders involved would be sent notices to pay fines and compensate for the missing stock. The almost-empty or empty bottles suggests the liquor was sold without being officially reported, resulting in lost revenue for the state. The stock audits are being conducted as the Jharkhand state transitions from state-managed to privately licensed alcohol sales. The rats in Dhanbad were also cited as culprits behind the disappearance of 10kg of 'bhang' (marijuana edibles) and 9kg of marijuana from police custody in the city. Chemor temple not facing demolition, says chairman
Compiled by DIYANA PFORDTEN, and R. ARAVINTHAN THE Chemor Sri Muniswarar Temple committee had denied claims that the temple is facing demolition, Makkal Osai reported. Its chairman, identified as Mugam Nathan, said the temple was visited by Ipoh City Council officials a few days ago. The visit was related to the road-widening works near the temple, which is located next to the railway tracks. The temple toilets, store and office structures have been removed to make way for the work, but the temple itself need not be demolished, he said. This had also been confirmed by the council officials who visited the temple, Mugam said. He added that people should stop spreading online claims. > The daily also reported that a diminutive female wildlife ranger in India has surprised the Internet by catching a 5.48m-long cobra bare-handed. The officer, identified as Roshni from Kerala, was called to deal with a cobra in a Thiruvanndapuram housing area. Roshni, who has apparently caught around 800 snakes in eight years with the wildlife department, dealt with the serpent with ease. No road, no chance to marry
FOR 12 years, the Indian village of Machahalli in Karnataka state has not celebrated a single wedding due to its lack of a proper access road, Makkal Osai reported. This isolation has created a cascade of problems, leaving the few hundred residents cut off from essential opportunities. Young men in Machahalli remain bachelors because outsiders are unwilling to marry their daughters into a village with such severe accessibility issues. This decade-long wedding drought has led to a dwindling population of children, leaving the village largely inhabited by the elderly.
