Notre Dame Football Preview 2025: Fighting Irish Season Prediction, Win Total Projection, Top Players

Notre Dame Fighting Irish Key to the Season Hit a freaking field didn't really matter until it Irish blew out just about everyone, but Mitch Jeter missed two field goals in the 16-14 loss to Northern Illinois. And then, when it was really on, he nailed all three kicks against Georgia and two monsters in the win over Penn done, and in comes Noah Burnette from North Carolina. He hit 79% of his field goals over his last three seasons - going 19-for-20 in 2023 - and that should be a huge help after the Irish kickers made 55% of their tries last year. Notre Dame Fighting Irish Key Player CJ Carr, QB might be an obvious call here, but … he's it. He's the Irish have a national championship-caliber team with a College Football Playoff-appearance schedule, and it all goes kablooey if Carr isn't Dame rolled with Sam Hartman a few years ago, and then came Riley Leonard and all he brought to last year's juggernaut. Those two were old, experienced talents who were ready to go right out of the Carr has to do is be great immediately against Miami and then Texas A&M. He'll be a stat-sheet filler, but the 6-4, 223-pound Fields is the one who should make a far bigger great deep, and with five years of experience, he's a true No. 1 target with 129 catches, 1,849 yards, and 11 touchdowns at Transfer Out: Pat Coogan, C Irish offensive front is a rock, and as last year proved, it always has parts ready to replace the ones that break down. But it still stings to lose strong blockers like Coogan and Rocco Spindler. Coogan is off to Indiana, Spindler left for Nebraska, and now the pressure is on the inside guys to stay in one piece. Notre Dame Fighting Irish Key Game at Miami, Aug. 31The Irish showed up to College Station, Texas, in the opener last year and bullied Texas A&M in the 148-degree heat with 540% humidity - or something like that. They won 23-13, and forgetting the face-plant against Northern Illinois a week later, the win over the Aggies set the tone for one of the program's greatest seasons weather in Miami in late August should be nice and delightful. CBS Sports Names Malachi Fields As Notre Dame's Top Portal Addition

CBS Sports Names Malachi Fields As Notre Dame's Top Portal Addition originally appeared on Athlon Sports. For the second season in a row, Notre Dame has elected to dip into the transfer portal to find their boundary receiver. Last season, Clemson transfer Beaux Collins came to South Bend for his final season of eligibility and started all 16 games for the Irish at the 'X receiver' position. He was a quality player who logged 41 receptions, 490 receiving yards, averaged 12.0 yards per catch and hauled in three touchdowns. Advertisement Collins was the team's leading receiver until Jaden Greathouse exploded in the CFP Semifinals and the national title game. This season, Notre Dame and offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock needed an impact playmaker at the boundary position and when Cavaliers receiver Malachi Fields entered his name in the portal, it became a no brainer for both parties where the Virginia native should spend his final year of eligibility. "Jaden Greathouse showed some signs as a go-to receiver in the national championship game. But Notre Dame lacked a true WR1 last season and hasn't had a wide receiver clear the 600-yard barrier since 2021. Fields should end that streak. A favorite of personnel departments across the country in the portal this winter, Fields combined for 1,619 yards and 10 TDs over the last two seasons. He's a big vertical field stretcher at 6-feet-4, 220 pounds and is a presence defenses will have to shade coverage toward. That's a dangerous thing when you consider how good Notre Dame's run game projects to be this year." - Chris Hummer, CBS Sports In back to back seasons, Fields logged over 50 receptions, 800 yards, averaged 14.0 yards per catch and hauled in five touchdowns in both 2023 and 2024. In what was considered a dormant offense, Fields was their lone bright spot. His fit at Notre Dame is coming at the perfect time, given Greathouse's breakout in the post season along with a talented returning offensive line and a bump in quarterback passing ability. At 6-4 223 pounds, Fields gives Notre Dame a presence in the boundary it has been lacking since the 2019 season when Chase Claypool was the go-to receiver. His play style and body type resemble Miles Boykins from the 2018 season, a year where he finished with 59 receptions, 872 yards, averaged 14.8 YPC and had eight touchdowns in 13 games. Fields adds a much needed boost in size, experience and production to this Irish receiving corps, and provides a star power element they have been lacking at the position for quite some time. Greathouse showed flashes throughout last season and is expected to be a go-to player once again this year for Denbrock, but the addition of Fields completely changes the narrative. Advertisement Notre Dame hasn't had a dynamic one-two punch at receiver in quite some time, and this will, by far, be the best one-two punch at wide receiver in the Marcus Freeman era. Combine Fields and Greathouse's potential of being a dynamic duo with 6-7 250 pound tight end Eli Raridon and an explosive run game featuring Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price, this Fighting Irish offense will likely put up some serious numbers this season. Malachi Fields Named Top Newcomer For Notre Dame By Lindy's Sports

Malachi Fields Named Top Newcomer For Notre Dame By Lindy's Sports originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Notre Dame's receiving corps is set to have, potentially, their most productive season in quite some time this fall. Year two of the Mike Denbrock offense will likely be more balanced than year one, in large part due to the personnel and makeup of the offensive roster. The Irish will have a one-two punch at receiver they haven't had in several seasons in junior Jaden Greathouse and Virginia transfer Malachi Fields. Both players were ranked in Lindy's Sports Top 20 wide receivers for 2025 and Fields was ranked as Notre Dame's 'top newcomer' ahead of this fall. Advertisement Fields spent his first four seasons playing wideout for the Cavaliers. He had a relatively quite freshman year in 2021, but at 6-4 220 pounds, his potential flashed at times. In 2022, he was poised for a breakout season, but it was cut short and he missed almost the entire season with a foot injury. Fields returned to the starting lineup in 2023 and broke out immediately. He finished his junior season playing 783 snaps, recorded 58 receptions, 811 yards, averaged 14.0 yards per catch and had five receiving touchdowns. Out of his 58 receptions, 39 of them went for first downs, he forced nine missed tackles and recorded 10 contested catches in 12 games, all according to PFF. The only blemish on his season long resume was the number of drops he tallied (6) in 2023. It was a part of his game that was quickly corrected in 2024. Last season, Fields finished the year with 701 snaps played, 55 receptions, 808 receiving yards, averaged 14.7 yards per catch and repeated his five touchdown performance. In less snaps, he became a more efficient player in almost every category. He recorded 12 missed tackles forced, 13 contested catches, 34 first downs and only dropped two passes all season long. Fields recorded three 100 yard performances, two of them back to back, in 2024. His lowest output of the season came in their final regular season game against Virginia Tech where he finished the day with two receptions for 20 yards. Fields shined against the tougher opponents on the Cavaliers' schedule last year. Against Notre Dame, he recorded four receptions for 81 yards. He tallied nine receptions for 129 yards against Louisville and three receptions for 65 yards and a touchdown against Clemson. Advertisement Fields will join Greathouse and the rest of the Irish receiving corps this summer. The offensive line will be a year more experienced, they will have a strong run game as a foundation of the offense and the quarterback under center this year will be more comfortable consistently pushing the ball down the field. Fields' presence will change the dynamic of the receiving corps for Notre Dame; it's not surprising that he was named the top newcomer for the Irish this fall. Former Notre Dame wide receiver finds new home in the ACC

It seems like Notre Dame and Virginia made a transfer trade this cycle, each of the teams receiving a wide receiver in return. The Irish already got their part over a month ago, as Malachi Fields committed towards the end of December. The player-to-be-named later happened to be Jayden Thomas, who entered the portal just a few days after the season concluded. Thomas, a Georgia native, had a decent career with the Irish, who had 64 catches for 838 yards and 7 touchdowns, with a few carries mixed in as well. The 'trade' between both teams looks like it fits each other's needs, but if you had to pick a winner, it would be Notre Dame. Fields had almost as many yards last year as Thomas had in his whole career, and just two touchdowns short of that number as well. Regardless of production, we wish Thomas the best as he looks to finish him eligibility with the Cavaliers.
