Michigan football's 2026 recruiting class soars to top 12 with 5 commits this week

It wasn't that long ago that Michigan football fans were lamenting the fact that you almost had to click 'read more' in order to see where the Wolverines were ranked in the 2026 recruiting team rankings. Even in the month of May, there was a local outcry as the maize and blue had just a handful of commits, seemingly languishing behind a series of also-rans. Oh, how things change. Perhaps patience was in order? Advertisement Now here we are, a month later, and fans are celebrating what's turning out to be one of the best classes in the country. The Wolverines got two commitments on Friday, about 15 minutes apart (if that), when Richmond (Va.) Huguenot three-star linebacker Markel Dabney and Honolulu (Hawaii) Kamehameha four-star offensive tackle Malakai Lee both pledged to the class. That's adding on to commitments this week from St. Louis (Mo.) DeSmet four-star defensive tackle Titan Davis, Mansfield (Tx.) four-star wide receiver Zion Robinson, and Needham (Mass.) St. Sebastian's four-star offensive tackle Marky Walbridge. Oh, and there are still two or three outstanding commits who have told Sherrone Moore and the program, but haven't announced yet publicly. So, where does Michigan rank now that it's added five commitments in five days? Here's a look at the different recruiting services: Advertisement 247Sports team rankings: No. 11 overall, 0 five-stars, 9 four-stars, 6 three-stars, average rating (90.77), overall rating (229.93) On3 team rankings: No. 11 overall, 0 five-stars, 9 four-stars, 6 three-stars, average rating (88.58), score (90.010) Rivals team rankings: No. 12 overall, 1 five-star, 9 four-stars, 4 three-stars, points (1762) We'll have to wait about a month to see where ESPN ranks the maize and blue. With the new rankings update, Michigan has surpassed teams such as Texas, Tennessee, Florida, and LSU (via all the rankings services). Whereas, beforehand, the Wolverines were behind all of them. There are still several top targets that are trending toward the maize and blue who decide soon, such as Richmond (Va.) Hermitage four-star CB Andre Clarke, Frisco (Tx.) Texas Loses Out on 2026 Four-Star OT Malakai Lee

Texas Loses Out on 2026 Four-Star OT Malakai Lee originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Texas has been pushing hard for four-star offensive tackle Malakai Lee over the last few weeks. Michigan has been the long-time favorite in his recruitment, but On3's Steve Wiltfong reported that the Longhorns were "closing the gap" as of late. Unfortunately it wasn't enough as Lee announced his commitment to the Wolverines on Friday. He chose Michigan over Texas, Alabama, and Georgia. Advertisement The Honolulu native is ranked the No. 10 offensive tackle in the nation and the No. 2 overall prospect in Hawaii, according to 247Sports composite. Lee took an official visit to Texas on June 6 while Michigan received his final official visit on June 20. It's very likely Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian and offensive line coach Kyle Flood will continue pursuing Lee until pen hits the paper. As it stands now, the Longhorns have two offensive line commits for the 2026 class in three-star offensive tackle Max Wright and three-star interior offensive lineman Nicolas Robertson. Lee's massive 6-foot-7, 310-pound frame saw him coveted from just about every powerhouse program in the country. Aside from the four finalists, he also held offers from schools like USC, Oregon, Tennessee and Miami. Advertisement Texas currently holds the No. 11 recruiting class in the country with 15 total commits. The Longhorns are trending for several other blue-chip prospects that could announce their decisions in the near future. Why Malakai Lee's commitment decision could reshape Alabama's 2026 offensive line

The upcoming commitment of Malakai Lee on June 27 will be a crucial point of the Alabama Crimson Tide's offensive line recruiting approach in the 2026 cycle. The four-star offensive tackle of Kamehameha Secondary in Honolulu, Hawaii, has come down to four powerhouse schools, and they are the Alabama Crimson Tide, Michigan Wolverines, Georgia Bulldogs, and Texas Longhorns. He is 6-foot-6 and 320 pounds, and Lee possesses elite physical tools that could have an instant effect on whichever program he commits to. His choice is especially significant to Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Kalen DeBoer, who is assembling his first full recruiting class since taking over as head coach. Alabama Crimson Tide faces critical recruitment battle The targeting of Malakai Lee by the Alabama Crimson Tide is a vital point in the evolution of the team's offensive line. Lee is the 137th overall prospect in this country and the 10th-best offensive tackle in the recruiting class of 2026, so he is a foundation block on which any program can build its future. His physical attributes are also impressive, with 36-inch arms and an 85-inch wingspan, which are excellent measurements that translate very well in the collegiate game. View this post on Instagram A post shared by ColorsTV (@colorstv) The Alabama Crimson Tide offensive coordinator Nick Sheridan and offensive line coach Chris Kapilovic have put Lee on their radar and have been targeting him, as he is expected to be a huge anchor in their offensive line over a couple of seasons. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Here's A List Of Cheapest Steel Suppliers (See The List) Steel Suppliers | search ads Search Now Undo There is a great deal of versatility in the fact that the Hawaii native can play both left and right tackle, and this fits the Alabama recruiting philosophy to a tee. The natural balance and his fluid movement ability gave him an edge over other prospects in his class, which directly translates to success in the Southeastern Conference. Lee's decision timeline creates urgency for Alabama Crimson Tide As Malakai Lee plans to visit the Michigan Wolverines on June 20, the Alabama Crimson Tide is under more pressure to make him commit before the announcement date. The crystal ball of 247Sports has already predicted that Lee will go to the Michigan Wolverines, which adds pressure to the coaching staff of Alabama. Lee has already made official visits to the Alabama Crimson Tide, the Georgia Bulldogs, and the Texas Longhorns, and is already well-versed with what is being offered in each program. This was in the Alabama Crimson Tide, which has been successful in producing NFL-calibre offensive linemen as a strong selling point in the recruitment of Lee. Past Alabama players such as Jedrick Wills Jr., Alex Leatherwood, and Landon Dickerson have all come out successful in the professional arena, proving that the program can get the most out of its offensive line talent. The record of Alabama sending offensive linemen into the first round of the NFL draft may be the determining factor in Lee's analysis. Fans can follow Malakai Lee's commitment announcement on June 27 through various social media platforms and recruiting networks that typically broadcast such announcements live. The decision of Malakai Lee to commit will have a huge influence on the future of the Alabama Crimson Tide recruiting class in 2026 and in the future of the Alabama Crimson Tide offensive line. His decision between Alabama, Michigan, Georgia, and Texas is one of the most closely followed recruiting battles of the cycle, and it could give a boost to the program that ends up with his signature.
