Malaysian PM Anwar Ibrahim meets with Chinese FM Wang Yi
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim (R) meets with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Putrajaya, Malaysia, July 11, 2025. /Chinese Foreign Ministry Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Friday met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Putrajaya. Chinese President Xi Jinping's successful visit to Malaysia this year marked a major event in the history of Malaysia-China relations, Anwar said, adding that Xi's deep concern for and reflections on the future of the world have earned the heartfelt respect of the Malaysian government and its people. The fruitful cooperation between Malaysia and China in various fields has benefited the people of both countries, Anwar said. In today's world, cooperation mechanisms such as BRICS are growing with remarkable momentum as countries pursue independence, autonomy and development, he said. China has played a leading role in this process, which Malaysia highly appreciates, Anwar noted. Under the joint guidance of the two countries' leaders, China-Malaysia relations have entered the best period in their history, said Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee. China regards Malaysia as a sincere friend and stands ready to work with the Malaysian side to implement the important consensus reached between the two countries' leaders and to advance the building of a high-level, strategic China-Malaysia community with a shared future in a steady and substantive manner, he added. He said China fully supports Malaysia's work as the rotating chair of ASEAN and in playing a greater role in regional and international affairs. As developing countries, emerging economies, and key representatives of the Global South, China and Malaysia should join hands to meet challenges and pursue revitalization and development together, Wang said. The United States' unilateral imposition of high tariffs is irresponsible and unpopular, Wang noted. He said China will always stand with the vast number of developing countries, remain committed to high-level opening-up, share the dividends of its super-sized market and work together to expand the pie of win-win cooperation. Anwar meets leaders from seven countries
PUTRAJAYA: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim held a series of bilateral meetings with senior leaders from seven countries, including China and Australia, where discussions centred around efforts to further strengthen ties. The meetings held at the Prime Minister's Office also involved representatives from Pakistan, Turkiye, Palestine, United Kingdom and European Union, who are here for the 58th Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting and Related Meetings. On his meeting with China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi, the Prime Minister said both sides discussed various aspects of Malaysia-China ties, which continues to be strengthened following President Xi Jinping's visit to Malaysia in April. 'We explored efforts to narrow the trade gap and expand cooperation in the port, liquefied natural gas (LNG), water, digital economy and green technology sectors,' he said, Bernama reported. Anwar also expressed appreciation for China's support of Asean's Five-Point Consensus regarding the situation in Myanmar, reiterating the importance of a peaceful resolution to the South China Sea issue, in line with international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). During his meeting with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, the Prime Minister welcomed investors' interest in the smart manufacturing, digital economy, artificial intelligence and renewable energy sectors. 'Australia has also been invited to participate in the Malaysia International Halal Showcase (Mihas) this September, in line with the halal economy's vast potential as a driver of future cooperation,' he said. In a meeting with Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Anwar said discussions revolved around the upcoming official visit of Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to Malaysia, during which several memoranda of understanding are expected to be signed. The two leaders also explored potential cooperation in agriculture, particularly in rice trade, and exchanged views on regional and global developments, including Asean-Pakistan relations and the issue of Jammu and Kashmir. Anwar also received a courtesy call from Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, where he expressed interest in encouraging further investments in strategic sectors such as semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, digital and green economy, artificial intelligence (AI) and aerospace. On his meeting with the United Kingdom's Foreign Secretary David Lammy, Anwar said the discussion focused on enhancing cooperation across various areas, including investment, energy transition, education, climate change, defence, digitalisation and AI. 'I also welcome increased UK investments, particularly in the semiconductor and green infrastructure sectors,' he said. The Prime Minister, who also met Palestinian Planning and International Cooperation Minister Dr Estephan Salameh, said Malaysia continues to strengthen its role in supporting the Palestinian people, particularly in the recovery and reconstruction of Gaza. On his meeting with the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas, Anwar said Malaysia has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening ties with the EU, which is currently Malaysia's fourth-largest trading partner, with total trade reaching US$47.93bil in 2024.

China, Australia among seven nations in bilateral talks with Anwar
PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on Friday (July 11) held a series of bilateral meetings with senior leaders and representatives from seven countries and international entities, on the sidelines of the 58th Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) and related meetings currently taking place here. The meetings, held at the Prime Minister's Office, involved China, Australia, Pakistan, Turkiye, Palestine, the United Kingdom (UK) and the European Union. In his meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Anwar said both sides discussed various aspects of Malaysia-China ties, which continues to be strengthened following President Xi Jinping's state visit to Malaysia in April, during which 31 memoranda of understanding and agreements were signed. "China has remained Malaysia's largest trading partner for 16 consecutive years, with total trade reaching US$106bil in 2024. We also explored efforts to narrow the trade gap and expand cooperation in the port, liquefied natural gas (LNG), water, digital economy, and green technology sectors,' he said in a statement issued to Bernama and RTM. Anwar also expressed appreciation for China's support of Asean's Five-Point Consensus regarding the situation in Myanmar and reiterated the importance of a peaceful resolution to the South China Sea issue, in line with international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (Unclos). During his meeting with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, Anwar said Malaysia and Australia continued discussions towards strengthening bilateral relations, which have been established since 1957. "I welcome the interest of Australian investors in the smart manufacturing, digital economy, artificial intelligence and renewable energy sectors. "Australia has also been invited to participate in the Malaysia International Halal Showcase (Mihas) this September, in line with the halal economy's vast potential as a driver of future cooperation,' he said. Anwar also said that education remains one of the key pillars of Malaysia-Australia relations, and both countries are expected to sign a new memorandum of understanding (MoU) at the Annual Leaders' Meeting in October. The MoU will cover areas including Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), curriculum development and student exchange programmes. "I also appreciate Australia's support in enhancing local vaccine capability through training and research funding amounting to AU$500,000,' said Anwar. The Prime Minister also said he looks forward to the official visit of Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to Malaysia in October, which is expected to open a new chapter in bilateral relations based on trust, shared values and aspirations for a more peaceful and prosperous Indo-Pacific. - Bernama

Kota Kinabalu: The highly anticipated JOM! Malaysia-China Friendship Run 2025, set to flag off on July 27, has once again received strong backing from leading sports and lifestyle brand Skechers, which is sponsoring staff uniforms and prizes worth a total of RM300,000. The Malaysia-China Friendship Association Sabah (MCFAS) President Dr Oh Ei Sun recently met in Hong Kong with Henry Tan, Vice Chairman and CEO of the Luen Thai Group, alongside the association's Honorary President Datuk Clement Yeh and Executive Vice President cum Secretary General Steven Liaw. The meeting served to update Tan on the success of last year's event and the current preparations for this year's edition. Hannah confirms attendance at Run

Kota Kinabalu: Federal Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh has confirmed her attendance at the upcoming 2025 JOM! Malaysia-China Friendship Run, adding prominence and significance to this year's event. The event is organised by the Malaysia-China Friendship Association Sabah. Its President Dr Oh Ei Sun, together with Executive Vice President and Secretary-General Steven Liaw and Organising Chairperson Michael Lim, paid a courtesy visit to Yeoh. They were accompanied by Kaven Lee, Political Secretary to the Deputy Minister of Plantation and Commodities and Kota Kinabalu MP Datuk Chan Foong Hin. Dr Oh said Yeoh's confirmation brings strong encouragement and validation to the event. 'The Minister's involvement elevates the event's official stature and public visibility, while highlighting the Government's commitment to strengthening Malaysia-China people-to-people ties, promoting public health, and fostering the spirit of sports.
