Police probe mysterious explosions in Perak district

Authorities have yet to determine the cause behind the explosion-like noises and tremors reported across various parts of the district last week. According to Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad, police investigations are still underway due to the potential implications for state security. 'The inquiry is still in progress, but no definitive cause has been identified so far. As such, we're not in a position to make any detailed comments. Once the police complete their investigation, the findings will be compiled into a report for the state government,' he said after launching the Malaysia Culinary World Cup 2025 at Bulatan Sultan Azlan Shah on Friday. He added that this was not the first time such incidents had been experienced in Perak and Selangor, yet the origin of the disturbances remains elusive. Meanwhile, the Perak branch of the Department of Minerals and Geoscience (JMG) has confirmed it is continuing geological surveys in the Ipoh area, though no conclusive evidence has emerged so far. The department noted that similar unexplained booms have been recorded globally. Often described as originating from the sky, these sounds range from moderate to loud and can sometimes cause windows and building structures to shake. Beyond Ipoh, such occurrences have also been reported in countries like Japan, the United States, Bangladesh, Belgium, Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, Colombia, Finland, Vanuatu, Italy, Ireland, and Indonesia. These unexplained sounds were previously documented in the years 2012, 2018, 2024, and most recently on 18 June in Ipoh. Officials have ruled out several potential causes, including quarry blasts, bomb tests, and sonic booms from military jets. —June 27, 2025 Main image: Kayak

The event saw 800 participants from Malaysia and 16 other countries competing across 65 categories. Saarani emphasised Perak's readiness as a competitive TVET hub, offering structured skill training to meet industry demands. Additionally, he reaffirmed the state's commitment to aggressively promoting Visit Malaysia 2026, aiming to surpass this year's tourist numbers.

Ipoh explosion and tremors remain a mystery after 10 days

IPOH: Almost 10 days after a mysterious loud explosion and tremors shook parts of Ipoh on June 18, the cause remains unknown. Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said investigations were ongoing, but no concrete findings have emerged. "This matter falls under the jurisdiction of the police as it involves state security. The police are the sole agency conducting the investigation. "Whatever findings the police make will be reported to the state government," he told reporters after opening the Malaysia Culinary World Cup 2025 at Bulatan Sultan Azlan Shah here today. Saarani acknowledged that the incident required a thorough investigation, especially since similar events had occurred before without resolution. "This is the second such occurrence in Perak. Similar incidents have also been reported in Selangor," he said. Meanwhile, the Perak Minerals and Geoscience Department (JMG) in a statement confirmed that the department had yet to identify a geological explanation. "We will continue our studies on possible geological sources around Ipoh. So far, the cause has not been found," the statement read. JMG confirmed that the latest incident, which occurred about 10.30am on June 18, has been ruled out as resulting from quarry activity, bomb testing, or jet aircraft sonic booms. The statement said the sound was consistently heard across the same region, from Chemor, Klebang, and Meru in the north to Tambun and Gunung Rapat in the south. It also noted that similar unexplained sonic booms, often described as coming from the sky with explosive force, have been reported globally. "These mysterious sounds have occurred not only in Malaysia but also in countries like Japan, the United States, Bangladesh, Belgium, Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, Colombia, Finland, Vanuatu, Italy, Ireland and Indonesia. "They are often moderate to loud and occasionally strong enough to shake windows and walls of buildings," the statement said, adding that in Ipoh similar unexplained explosions were previously reported in 2012, 2018, and 2024, with no definitive source ever identified. On June 18, it was reported that people heard a booming sound and felt tremors in various areas around the state capital. According to social media posts and comments, users claimed to have felt the tremors in Chemor, Chepor and Tanah Hitam about 10.30am. On Oct 21 last year, a loud explosion and strong tremor was also reported in several parts of the city, including Tasek, Perak Stadium, Meru, Falim, Manjoi, Chemor and Sungai Siput at 11.06am.
