Minister gives RM100k aid to SMAP Kajang after fire

KAJANG: Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar has delivered RM100,000 in immediate aid to Sekolah Menengah Agama Persekutuan (SMAP) Kajang following a fire that damaged one of its offices. The financial assistance was split equally between the Malaysian Islamic Economic Development Foundation (YAPEIM) and Yayasan Taqwa of the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council. Mohd Na'im stated that the funds will support urgent repairs and ensure uninterrupted teaching and learning activities. 'The Prime Minister and the MADANI Government, particularly through religious agencies, remain committed to safeguarding Islamic educational institutions,' he told reporters after inspecting the fire site. The minister also met with school staff to assess the damage and salvage important documents. 'There are challenges, but InsyaAllah, there is wisdom behind this test. Perhaps this trial will bring future good,' he added. The fire broke out early Thursday, destroying an office room. The Selangor Fire and Rescue Department responded at 1.18 am, deploying 16 firefighters and five engines. The blaze was under control by 1.58 am, with no casualties reported. Investigations into the cause and losses are ongoing. - Bernama

YAPIEM allocates RM13.5 mln to upgrade homes for asnaf families

PASIR PUTEH: Close to 300 underprivileged families in Malaysia have seen their housing conditions improve thanks to a RM13.5 million allocation by the Malaysian Islamic Economic Development Foundation (YAPIEM) between 2020 and May this year. The funding, managed through the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs), has facilitated the construction and repair of 293 homes for asnaf (those eligible for zakat assistance). This effort is part of a broader national push to enhance living standards for vulnerable communities. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar shared that the initiative includes 167 home repairs and 126 new builds, with 199 projects completed and 94 still underway. 'This initiative is made possible through generous public contributions to the YAPIEM Trust Fund, which are channelled directly to those in need,' he said during the Sinar Lestari and Sinar Kasih Housing Programme handover ceremony in Kampung Merkang. The programme is a collaborative effort involving the Kelantan Federal Development Office (PPPNK) and the Implementation Coordination Unit (ICU) under the Prime Minister's Department. YAPIEM, established in 1976, is among 14 agencies under the Religious Affairs portfolio. At the event, four recipients under the eKasih Kelantan programme were handed keys to newly built homes, each valued at RM80,000, totalling RM320,000. One beneficiary, Nor Liza Hassan, 51, had waited 14 years for a home. She now cares full-time for her husband, Mohd Ridzuan Nawi, 52, who has been bedridden since 2011 after a fall. 'This is truly a meaningful blessing. I've been applying for housing aid for over a decade,' she said. Nor Liza supports two children, aged 17 and 18, one still in school while the other attends Kelantan Matriculation College in Kok Lanas. The family relies on monthly aid from the Social Welfare Department and PERKESO, as her husband previously worked as a school security guard. To supplement their income, she sells herbal products online and works as a seasonal food vendor during Ramadan, with plans to open a small food stall when possible. Single mother Nik Shazrina Nik Mohd Zulkiflee also received assistance—a RM9,600 Sinar Kasih grant—after her husband died in a road accident last year. The aid aims to ease her financial burden following the loss of the family's sole breadwinner.

RM46,500 given to the needy in Sabah: Yapeim

Published on: Saturday, April 26, 2025 Published on: Sat, Apr 26, 2025 Text Size: Dr Na'im (third from left) presenting a mock cheque of RM5,000 to a representative. PUTATAN: The Malaysian Islamic Economic Development Foundation (Yapeim) distributed RM46,500 to underprivileged groups in Sabah. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs), Senator Datuk Dr Na'im Mokhtar, said this was part of Yapeim's efforts to fulfil its responsibility in assisting communities tested by Allah SWT through financial hardships. 'This is a responsibility carried out by not only Yapeim, but also most of the agencies under the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs),' he said. 'The Aidilfitri Madani Yapeim programme in Sabah is the first to be organised, with eight more selected locations across the country that Yapeim will reach out to through this programme in the near future,' he said. On the Haji, he said part of the preparations by Tabung Haji (TH) Sabah includes informing the pilgrims to equip themselves with knowledge through the Kursus Perdana Haji. 'We hope with the knowledge gained, they will be able to perform the Haj as Malaysian pilgrims are well-known and skilled in carrying out the rituals of Haj. 'This includes physical preparations as well. It is true that during every Haj season, the weather in the Holy Land is extremely hot. Even here, when the temperature reaches between 30 and 50 degrees Celsius, we already feel the heat — let alone there, where it can reach nearly 50 degrees Celsius. It is indeed very, very hot.' 'Therefore, my advice is to prepare themselves not only physically but also emotionally when facing the extreme heat. 'In addition to drinking plenty of water, follow the rules set by Tabung Haji (TH), maintain the country's image, uphold discipline, show respect and help one another.' At the event, he presented cash assistance of RM200 under the Sinar Kasih programme to 50 families, totalling RM10,000, an Economic Development Programme to five associations (RM5,000), donations for infrastructure, mosques and students (RM15,000), as well as expenses for organising the event and community contributions (RM16,500). Previously, Yapeim allocated a sum of RM1.2 million for the Yapeim Madani Ramadan programme at over 25 locations nationwide, benefiting 7,700 students in need. For Sabah, until February 2025, Yapeim has assisted a total of 40,544 pledgees with financing amounting to RM512.5 million, involving collateral worth RM770.8 million, through 11 operating Ar Rahnu Yapeim branches. For the record, as of December 2024, Yapeim has distributed a total of RM725 million to 14 million beneficiaries nationwide since 1985. This involves three core areas of Yapeim: economic development/entrepreneurship, educational assistance, and community aid. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Don't use Quranic verses, hadiths as tool to achieve political goals - Mohd Na'im

PUTRAJAYA: Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar has urged politicians not to use verses from the Al-Quran and hadiths as a tool to achieve political goals, especially during election campaigns. He said such practices should be avoided, especially in matters that require consultation with religious authorities such as the mufti departments or state Islamic bodies. 'In my view, if it involves opinion on hukum (rulings), it's best to avoid making statements to avoid causing confusion among the public. 'It's always advisable to refer to the mufti department or the relevant authorities. Most importantly, do not exploit them (Quranic verses or hadiths) for political gain,' he told reporters after attending the Malaysian Islamic Economic Development Foundation (YAPEIM) Aidilfitri celebration here today. Mohd Na'im was responding to a question on the tendency of political leaders to use religious references in their campaign narratives. The media reported that PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang, during a mega speech at the Ayer Kuning state by-election campaign last Saturday, said that Muslims should prioritise political victory, even if it means postponing plans to perform the umrah or haj pilgrimage. Yesterday, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi expressed regret over the campaign tactics being used in the Ayer Kuning state by-election, which continue to raise sensitive issues, including race, religion and royalty. Ahmad Zahid, who is also Barisan Nasional chairman, said campaigns should focus on the strengths of the party and its candidates, rather than belittling others.
