Public backs ‘Jom Beli Lokal' campaign at KPDN carnival in Iskandar Puteri

ISKANDAR PUTERI: The Buy Malaysian Goods Campaign (KBBM) 2025, themed 'Jom Beli Lokal,' has drawn enthusiastic participation from traders and visitors at the Southern Zone Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) Carnival. A Bernama survey revealed widespread approval for the initiative, with many seeing it as a crucial step to bolster demand for local products and uplift micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Café owner Roslinda Basir, 51, shared that the campaign has provided small-scale entrepreneurs like her a direct platform to showcase their products. 'At this carnival, I'm selling nasi ambang with homemade side dishes and sambal. The response has been very encouraging over the past two days,' she said. 'With continued government support, more Malaysians will recognise and trust locally made products.' Kuih keria seller Mohamad Riduan Sukiman, 41, echoed the sentiment, calling the campaign a vital effort to empower local industries. 'I hope such initiatives reach rural areas too, as our products are high-quality. Consistency is key to expanding our market,' he said. Visitor Noraini Md Yusof, 32, praised the campaign for stimulating post-pandemic economic recovery. 'Local products are affordable and high-quality. If we don't support them, who will?' she said after purchasing snacks. Business student S. Harvindran, 21, highlighted the campaign's role in fostering patriotism. 'Buying local supports small traders and national growth. Many local products rival international brands—we must back our own,' he said. KPDN Business Development Division director Adiratno Che Ani noted that 63 booths under the KBBM pavilion featured diverse local businesses, including food, household items, and lifestyle goods. He encouraged the public to visit the carnival, running until tomorrow, to support local entrepreneurs. Launched by Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali, KBBM 2025 aims to expand market access for local products and reduce import reliance.

‘We're staying': Five Malaysians in Iran decline evacuation, says foreign minister

KUALA LUMPUR, June 28 — Five Malaysians — four students and a trader — remain in Iran and have signed declarations opting out of evacuation efforts, Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said today. According to Utusan Malaysia, the foreign minister said the individuals had expressed their gratitude to the Malaysian government and Wisma Putra, but chose to remain in the conflict-affected country. 'The four students decided not to return. They signed the declaration and thanked the Malaysian government and Wisma Putra,' he said after officiating the annual general meeting of the Penajes Women's Cooperative in Rembau today. 'They told us they have chosen to stay.' Mohamad said the evacuation of Malaysians from Iran was completed at midnight on June 21, involving 24 citizens and one Singaporean. 'There are not many Malaysians in Iran. In contrast, Qatar has over 5,000 Malaysians. 'Thankfully, since the US base in Qatar was bombed, there have been no further attacks. The airspace has reopened and Malaysians in Qatar are safe,' he added.

Jualan Rahmah aids youth in managing rising living costs in Kuching

KUCHING: The Jualan Rahmah MADANI programme has become a crucial support system for young Malaysians struggling with rising living costs. By offering essential goods at lower prices, the initiative helps ease financial burdens while promoting prudent spending. Media practitioner Asyraf Halim, 34, shared how the programme has helped him manage expenses since living independently. 'Prices here are much lower than at shopping malls, allowing me to save significantly,' he said during the event at the Sarawak State Mosque compound. Ismasuzilla Bahari, 28, from Telaga Air, echoed this sentiment, noting how the programme helps her family save RM300 to RM400 monthly on groceries. 'It's a relief for households like mine,' she added. Zulhilmi Alet, 31, an assistant officer at the Ministry of Youth and Sports, stressed the programme's broader impact. 'Expanding it to include more local items like rice would benefit everyone, especially the B40 group,' he said. Organised by the Sarawak State Mosque Welfare Trust Board (LKMNS) in collaboration with the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN), the event saw strong turnout, with stalls opening as early as 8 am. The initiative is part of the Payung Rahmah framework under Budget 2025, designed to alleviate living costs while boosting local businesses.

Malaysia Needs Talent, Technical Expertise In Energy Sector

BUSINESS From Siti Radziah Hamzah MOSCOW, June 28 (Bernama) -- Malaysia urgently requires skilled talent and technical expertise in electrical engineering, renewable energy, grid systems, and nuclear technology, in line with the government's focus on the future energy sector, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof. Fadillah, who is also the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister, said career opportunities in these fields are growing rapidly, not only within the public sector but also across the expanding high-technology private sector. He said the government expects nuclear energy to play an increasingly significant role in the national energy mix, and is therefore seriously exploring its use as one of the strategic options to ensure long-term energy security for future generations. 'The visit to Russia provided an opportunity to examine nuclear power plant technology, safety, and operational models that could potentially be adapted for use in Malaysia,' he said in his speech at a gathering with Malaysians in Russia last night. The event was attended by 150 students and members of the Deputy Prime Minister's delegation. Fadillah stressed that energy and water security remain critical pillars in Malaysia's goal of becoming a developed nation. He said both sectors featured prominently in bilateral discussions with the Russian government. 'Investors have shown strong interest in the potential of Malaysia's energy sector, particularly in high-tech and sustainable technologies,' he said.

South Korea Praises Malaysia's ASEAN Chair Role In Myanmar Crisis

KUALA LUMPUR, June 27 — South Korea's Ambassador to Malaysia, Yeo Seung Bae, speaks to Bernama in an exclusive interview at the Korean Embassy, highlighting the success of the recently concluded 12-day K-Culture Festival held from June 11 to 22. Organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) and various Korean government agencies, the event exceeds expectations, drawing over 35,000 visitors of all ages and backgrounds — a testament, Yeo says, to South Korea's growing cultural appeal among Malaysians. -- fotoBERNAMA (2025) COPYRIGHT RESERVED By Nur Atiq Maisarah Suhaimi & Nur Elysa Amirah Suhaimi KUALA LUMPUR, June 28 (Bernama) -- South Korea has praised Malaysia's active leadership as Chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), highlighting its constructive role in promoting regional peace and stability. South Korea's Ambassador to Malaysia Yeo Seung Bae said that as ASEAN organises for peace and stability in Southeast Asia, Malaysia as the chair plays an important and active role, especially in addressing the ongoing crisis in Myanmar. bootstrap slideshow 'Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim visited Bangkok a couple of months ago and met both the military leadership and the opposition leadership. 'By doing this important role as Chair, Malaysia is making a positive contribution to regional peace and stability. 'In that regard, Korea highly appreciates the role of Malaysia, and our government will continue to support Malaysia's active role as the ASEAN Chair,' he told Bernama in an interview recently. In May 2025, Anwar initiated separate dialogues with Myanmar's junta leader Min Aung Hlaing and the opposition National Unity Government (NUG), marking a significant step towards fostering direct engagement between the conflicting parties. Subsequently, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM 2025) held in May also agreed that ASEAN would undertake internal consultations on the proposal to appoint a permanent ASEAN Special Envoy on Myanmar for a three-year term, a move aimed at ensuring continuity and sustained engagement in addressing the protracted crisis. On June 22, Malaysia called for enhanced collaboration between ASEAN and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to address the deteriorating situation in Myanmar, with a focus on ending violence, alleviating the humanitarian crisis, and supporting long-term peace in the country.
