Caps on salaries of Metro Vancouver politicians is ‘long overdue' critics say

There are more calls for caps on the salaries of local politicians, after Global News reported some of their earnings. Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie took home nearly $400,000 last year. Municipal Affairs critic Tony Luck said, 'I definitely support the provincial government coming and supporting caps. It's long overdue and it needs to be done for bringing fairness and equity and transparency for the citizens.' Including stipends and expenses, Brodie received $244,000 from Richmond, $64,000 from Metro Vancouver, about $40,000 from TransLink, $24,000 from the South Coast Transportation Authority and $28,000 from the Municipal Finance Authority – totaling $397,482. New Westminster Councillor Daniel Fontaine consolidated the numbers, noting Brodie is 'making far in excess of a B.C. cabinet minister, in fact, he's making almost as much as the President of the United States.' Port Coquitlam Mayor Brad West's compensation totaled $376,233 and Delta Mayor George Harvie made $317,401. Those figures include payments from boards, stipends and expenses. He responded, in part, 'Levels of remuneration will be addressed by Metro Vancouver's new Governance Committee…' A Deloitte report for Metro Vancouver has recommended that the province legislate a maximum remuneration threshold for total income from all local government-related appointments. The province says it will await completion of a governance review at Metro Vancouver and plans to be involved. Municipal Affairs Minister Ravi Kahlon said, 'We actually are likely going to put somebody on the governance review to make sure we're keeping an eye on what's happening and we'll see what comes from that discussion, but clearly something needs to happen.' For now, there's no indication this will be provincially mandated.

City of Richmond now ground zero for a number of controversies

The City of Richmond is now ground zero for a number of controversies. The RCMP continues to investigate gift card purchases by the City of Richmond, after a Global News investigation revealed nearly half a million dollars was spent on cards between 2022 and 2024. A forensic audit is also reviewing the past 10 years of gift card purchases in Richmond, where one employee has been terminated. Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie told Global News, 'Well, what I can say is on the gift card issue, we are trying get to the very bottom of this situation.' 2:08 Many questions after Richmond Olympic Oval delegation travels to Europe in 2022 Also being questioned are massive salaries. He added that 'the salaries for these officials seem to be much greater than what should be paid to public officials for these kinds of positions.' 2:24 Richmond staff internal memo on gift cards Recently, the Olympic Oval and the city refused requests to disclose costs of a 2022 European junket to Olympic-related events. Brodie says he was unaware. 'I did not know about that trip. I think that number of people sent was excessive.' Sources later told Global News that almost $78,000 was spent sending eight people to Spain and Switzerland. It's a sharp contrast to Vancouver, Whistler and West Vancouver, who all say they have not gone on any Olympic-related trips since 2020, despite having hosted events in 2010. Richmond mayor defends grabbing news camera, dodging question

Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie is defending his actions on Tuesday when he grabbed a Global News camera and avoided answering a question. Brodie was at the opening of a playground in Steveston when a Global News cameraman attempted to ask him a question about a European junket taken by employees of the Olympic Oval and the city. Brodie seemed to avoid the question at the playground event, eventually turning around before grabbing the camera and continuing to walk away. Speaking on CKNW on Wednesday morning, Brodie said it was an 'unfortunate situation.' 'I said that I wasn't going to do the interview at that time,' Brodie told CKNW host Scott Shantz. 'And then he went away. Then he came back, again, I'm in the middle of a group of people with social conversation. It was a really a nice, very nice family event. And then, he just insisted that he was going to have an interview. And I said, no. Story continues below advertisement 'And the camera was up quite near my face. Again, this is all kind of a blur, but the way I remember it is the camera up near my space and I had said no and frankly in a civil society I expect that to be respected after I've given literally hundreds of interviews with Global and other news outlets over the years.' 2:08 Many questions after Richmond Olympic Oval delegation travels to Europe in 2022 Brodie said he was reacting to the camera being 'in his face' and expected that an interview would be prearranged and not a surprise question at a different event. 'I don't think, from my point of view, it's unreasonable to expect that if you wish to do an interviews that there would be, you know, just because I'm standing there doesn't give the right for somebody to come up and put his camera in your face and demand answers.' 'I have done countless interviews over my time and I always try and answer as best I can and provide as much detail as I am able to do,' he added. –with files from Catherine Urquhart

Richmond Mayor questioned over Olympic Oval Europe trip

As Global News continues to investigate spending at the City of Richmond, there has been a troubling incident involving Mayor Malcolm Brodie. It happened Tuesday morning at a playground in Steveston. Global News attended as invited guests and, in addition to covering the event, we tried to ask Mayor Brodie about a European junket taken by employees of the Olympic Oval and the city. In a stunning turn of events, Mayor Brodie grabbed our camera. 2:08 Many questions after Richmond Olympic Oval delegation travels to Europe in 2022 Richmond's media relations person intervened, saying the mayor was sensitive to our reporting on Monday that the city and Olympic Oval had refused our repeated attempts to obtain costs of the 2022 junket, which later prompted us to file a freedom of information request. Story continues below advertisement Sources inside the Oval have now told us eight people went to Olympic-related events in Spain and Switzerland and that the trip cost about $77,787. After Brodie left the playground, his PR person contacted Global News and requested a sit-down interview for the mayor on Wednesday.
