22 Best And Worst Movie Musical Adaptations

As a movie musical lover (and a once theatre kid), I love seeing how passionate people get when debating movie adaptations of beloved stage shows. Over on Reddit, theatre fans are sharing the absolute BEST of the best stage-to-movie-musicals, to the ones that massively flopped and ultimately embarrassed themselves. Here's what they had to say — and fair warning, theatre folks don't hold back (it's the trauma from getting brutal post-show notes from drama teachers.) "Chicago works because it's one of the only ones that didn't think of a movie as an improvement on the limitations of the stage, but rather imported the idiosyncrasies of theatre into the movie. Other movie musicals are often ashamed of their origin, but Chicago embraced it." "The fact that they pulled off Wicked after all these years, all the production delays, and so many stage play iterations to compare it to if it went blows my mind how good it was! I know we still have Part 2 but considering it was all filmed as one movie, I think we're gonna be just fine!" "I saw the Wicked stage production for the first time a few weeks after seeing the movie, and I actually prefer the movie. When watching the stage, I got whiplash from the pacing on the first act, and the writing of the second act felt messy. I understand why the stage production is the way it is, but the movie had the chance to correct one of my biggest gripes. That being said — "Defying Gravity" is the only thing I enjoyed more on stage. Seeing someone lifted into the air in person hits harder than on screen." "I know how some people feel about jukebox musicals on here, but the movie version of Mamma Mia is legitimately so much better than the stage version imo." "The Fiddler on the Roof is not only one of the best movie versions of a musical I've seen, but might be one of the best movies I've ever seen in general. (Granted, the list of movies I would consider "one of the best I've seen" is pretty extensive!) "Can't believe how little The Sound of Music is being mentioned in this thread. Kind of THE definitive Broadway-to-movie adaptation, both in terms of cultural impact and in terms of how it improved on the stage version. Julie Andrews gives an all-time iconic performance as Maria, and the filming location in Austria with all the helicopter shots of the Alps is just magic." "I'm always in awe of how amazing Matilda is throughout all mediums. The book, the movie, the musical, and the musical movie are all incredible and I think there's something really special about that." "Probably The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Capturing the spirit and vibe of such a musical is amazing, and they did it." "I haven't seen every single movie adaptation of the musical, but of the ones I have seen, I usually refer to 1962's The Music Man as a perfect way to transfer a Broadway show to a film..." "I will also say that Oliver! is the rare example of a film version of a musical that is actually better than the stage version." "Best: Hairspray. I honestly think that the few changes that were made improved the story/flow." "Please do yourself a favour and watch The Producers with Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane. It is an almost 1-to-1 adaptation of the stage show, minus a song or two. It is a clever and hilarious thrill ride, with loveably unloveable characters." And now, the worst: "As someone who treasures and adores Rent (it meant SO much to me at a certain time), the movie was horrid and made me angry!" "In terms of worst, there's a lot of options, but 13's movie adaptation will never fail to bewilder me. It's like they went out of their way to make every wrong choice they could..." "I've got a bone to pick with the In the Heights movie. Lots of good, fun choreo, but John Chu cut it from a love story between a neighbourhood and its people into one between Usnavi and Vanessa. Lots of very weird changes, including the "X days until the blackout timer," which ruins the surprise of the act I finale. I could go on and on...I lived near the set, though, so that was a really fun summer." "Honestly, if The Phantom of the Opera had better male leads, it would've been perfect. But putting 17 year-old Emmy Rossum with two 30+ year-old men, and having her kiss them gives me the heebie jeebies. (On top of the male actors' terrible singing)." "A Chorus Line takes the cake as the worst. Some great performances (Terry Mann can do no wrong) but the transfer to film doesn't work." "They didn't use Michael Bennett's original choreography, they completely sidelined certain characters, and they CUT 'THE MUSIC AND THE MIRROR'." "Rock of Ages. Why Tom Cruise? Why Alec Baldwin? Why goddamn Russell Brand? Terrible show gives you a lot to work with and that adaptation just turned it to crap. I was so excited, ROA is genuinely a good show. It's campy as fu**, but it's SUPPOSED TO BE! The '80s were cheesy and campy and ridiculous. The stage show was great. The movie sucked balls." "Dear Evan Hansen was pretty high up there with not good adaptations. As much as I love the score and the show, I know it's problematic — but that show and its music got me through one of the harder times in my life. I love my Benny boy fiercely but he definitely looked extremely out of place and it felt like the whole thing was trying too hard. I loved the addition of 'The Anonymous Ones' — that is a beautiful song. But cutting out 'Good For You' was not a great call. "Meh: They faceplanted on The Last 5 Years by having them both in every scene together, imo. Completely effs up the emotional impact." "Sweeney Todd (unpopular opinion). It's hard to capture Sondheim properly, and they failed at almost every stop. This story needs to be Shakespearean, incredibly complex, and highly absurd in order for it to work. They reached for it all, but landed at none. Also, they started the dreadful trend of having tenors singing Sweeney's part, and I can't forgive that." "The Into The Woods movie SUCKS ASS I hate it so much. They cut out 'No More' (literally a pivotal moment in the baker's character development) and cut the narrator and the mysterious old man entirely?? And kept Rapunzel alive?????? Not to mention JAMES CORDEN. UGHHHH I hate this movie." And because these two were such popular answers, we had to give a special shoutout (or side-eye?) to what might just be the most universally hated movie musical adaptations... "Cats is genuinely one of the worst films I've ever seen. I thought it would be funny as a hate-watch, but it wasn't even 'so bad it's good.' It was just awful and made me sick to my stomach at several different moments lol." "I mean Cats is so obviously the worst so it shouldn't count to say Cats hahaha." "Cats was horrific and I wonder how anybody got roped into it. The cast was stacked." "The Mean Girls musical movie adaptation was awful. It felt like they were embarrassed they were making a musical." "The Mean Girls musical movie was one of the worst things i've ever seen." Let us know your all-time favourite and most hated movie musicals in the comments — I'll go first: I LOVE Mamma Mia (yes, even with Pierce Brosnan' singing, it's campy!), and I HATED the Mean Girls movie musical. Not super original answers, I me.😅😅 If you like what you see, be sure to follow BuzzFeed Canada on TikTok and Instagram for even more hot takes and theatre kid energy.🎭✨

Amanda Seyfried recounts her six auditions for Wicked, says 'I barely had time, but I made it work'

Amanda Seyfried has once again spoken up about one of the hardest auditioning experiences she's been through, for a role she ultimately didn't get. Specifically, she spoke about the six unsuccessful auditions she did for the role of Glinda in 2024's Wicked. While she's recounted her audition experiences in the past, such as on Josh Horowitz's Happy Sad Confused, she most recently brought them up during her appearance on Backstage's In the Envelope podcast. The episode where she discussed this aired on June 19. Even though she couldn't star in Wicked as she'd hoped, Amanda Seyfried has nonetheless had a prolific acting career. From her role as Sophie Sheridan in Mamma Mia and its sequel, to her acclaimed portrayal of Elizabeth Holmes in The Dropout, she has cemented her place as an actress to be reckoned with. Amanda Seyfried auditioned for 2024's Wicked six times Amanda Seyfried has a history of auditioning aggressively for her dream roles. She once did so six times for 2012's Les Miserables, and she matched that record when trying out for the role of Glinda in 2024's Wicked. The 2024 Wicked film is an adaptation of a stage musical that first ran on Broadway in 2003. The stage musical itself is based on the 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West authored by Gregory Maguire. The characters of the novel, musical and film originate from L. Frank Baum's classic children's book The Wizard of Oz, which was first published in 1900 and is now in the public domain. Amanda Seyfried auditioned for the role of Galinda Upland, a well-to-do and popular young woman who becomes the envy of the ostracized Elphaba. While Elphaba goes on to become the Wicked Witch of the West, Galinda in turn becomes Glinda the Good. In the 2024 film, Glinda's role went to Ariana Grande. Amanda admitted to pushing herself and being very competitive Speaking to the In the Envelope podcast, Amanda said that she really put her all into auditioning for Wicked despite her busy schedule, saying: 'I was busy. I barely had time to do it, but I made it work. I worked my ass off for years and years and years on that music." She admitted to having a competitive streak but believed that it was a healthy sort of competition she had with herself. Even though she didn't get the part, Amanda did earn the opportunity to sing with Cynthia Erivo, who plays the Wicked Witch, during her auditions. As she said to Josh Horowitz on Happy Sad Confused, that was a worthy moment in and of itself, and she has no regrets about not getting the role.

ABBA Nearly Charts A Brand New No. 1 Hit

ABBA earns four new top 10s on the Official Vinyl Singles chart, led by 'So Long' at No. 2 after the ... More band reissued several smashes on collectible vinyl. (Photo by Siegfried Pilz/United Archives via Getty Images) ABBA has long been known as a singles act, with many of the group's tunes proving far more popular decades after their release than the band's traditional albums. Throughout the years the Swedish musicians were together, they produced dozens of popular cuts, some of which remain among the most successful in pop music history. Multiple ABBA tracks reappear on the charts in the United Kingdom this week after the group reissued them on vinyl. The superstars almost claim a new No. 1 as a decades-old composition surges on the charts. ABBA Misses No. 1 By One Space ABBA scores four new top 10 hits on the Official Vinyl Singles chart this week, and remarkably, the group's titles appear one after another in a hugely successful streak. The band nearly secures a new leader, but just misses the throne as "So Long" opens at No. 2. The Official Vinyl Singles tally is led instead by Biffy Clyro, whose "A Little Love" launches at No. 1. Three Additional New Top 10 Hits As "So Long" starts in the runner-up space, three other ABBA cuts follow closely behind in the next trio of positions. "Mamma Mia," "SOS," and "I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do" debut at Nos. 3, 4, and 5, respectively this week. ABBA's Dozens of Top 10 Smashes ABBA has now snagged an impressive 33 top 10 hits on the Official Vinyl Singles tally. That roundup includes six No. 1 smashes, including iconic releases like "Waterloo," "Ring Ring," "Lay All Your Love on Me," and the more recent release "I Still Have Faith in You," all of which have spent at least one frame at the summit. ABBA's Vinyl Reissues After ABBA issued "Mamma Mia," "So Long," "SOS," and "I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do" on collectible vinyl, those tracks also manage to debut inside the top 10 on the Official Physical Singles chart, though they rank in slightly different positions than on the vinyl list. Each composition also becomes an immediate top 40 bestseller on the all-format, all-genre Official Singles Sales tally. On that roster, "Mamma Mia" was the top performer, as it enters at No. 22. "I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do" followed at No. 32, with "So Long" and "SOS" sandwiched between the two.

I fell in love with a Greek waiter on holiday who poured shots in my mouth - now we live together and couldn't be happier

A woman's family holiday became a 'Mamma Mia story' when she found love with the Greek waiter who poured shots in her mouth - and now they've moved in together. Beth Winstone, 21, from Birmingham, jetted off to Zakynthos, Greece, with her mother and grandma in August 2023 and visited the restaurant her family had gone to every year. She said she was not looking to find love after coming out of a 'bad' relationship just months earlier, but met Gabriel Alia, 25, while he worked as a waiter at his uncle's restaurant. Beth said Gabriel took her out for a drink on the third night of her holiday, and she fell in love instantly, meeting with him every day for the remainder of the trip. But when Beth returned to the UK, she said she got a flight back to Greece only two weeks later to see Gabriel because she didn't want to be apart from him. The Greek waiter 'asked Beth to be his girlfriend', and the two have been inseparable since, with Beth claiming she has found true love and that Greek men are 'different' to British men. The content creator said Gabriel bought her drinks and danced with her, helping her to 'get out of her shell' after her breakup. Beth said: 'In August 2023, my grandad died and my gran had already booked to go to Zante and I booked at the last minute, a month before we were meant to go. When Beth first met Gabriel, she said she wasn't looking for love because she had just come out a 'bad' relationship 'We went back to [a] restaurant [that the family liked to visit] and that's when we met. I was previously in a relationship, it ended and it mentally destroyed me, it was really bad. 'I had absolutely no expectations in my head, I didn't want to speak to anyone ever again and then that happened. 'When we were in the restaurant, I just sat there oblivious because I wasn't looking for anything. 'He kept trying to speak to me and asked if I ever smiled because apparently I had a moody face. 'It just went from there, he took me out on the third night of the holiday for a drink. After that, we'd see each other every day of the holiday, in the night after he finished work. 'When I got back home, two weeks later I flew back out on my own for five days, because he was still working. 'I came home and two days later at 2am in the morning I bought tickets for a flight from Manchester to Zante at 6am. I surprised him, he didn't know I was going. 'The first time I went back after two weeks he asked me to be his girlfriend, but I was still a bit unsure because of the long distance. But I said yes, obviously. 'It's the way he was with me, he'd make me laugh and stuff and take me out, not what most men do nowadays, he wanted to get to know me and meet my family and stuff, they loved him. It was meant to be. 'Greek men are different from English men, let me tell you that. I definitely had a Mamma Mia story, that's what all my friends said. 'The relationship is getting better and better, we haven't been apart a day since we met. He is the love of my life.' After going back and forth between Zakynthos and Birmingham, the couple now live together in the UK with Gabriel working for Beth's dad at his scaffolding business. Beth said: 'I went back to Greece in October with my mum and nan, I quit my job as a waitress and then moved there for a whole week. 'Once summer season finished in Greece he flew back to England with me to meet my dad. 'We moved back to Greece in November, we got a house in Zante, and then after Christmas we decided to move back to the UK because it was really hard for me to find a job there in the winter. 'We tried both and we decided we like it here more. I moved over there just after two months of meeting him but I knew it was something, and it was. After Christmas, the pair decided to move back to the UK because it was 'really hard' for Beth to find a job in Greece in the winter Beth said she 'didn't expect to be with a Greek man' - and just thought she was going on holiday with her family 'I absolutely didn't expect to be with a Greek man at all, I was just going on holiday with my mum and gran and my cousin, it all just happened so fast.' Beth explained that she had been visiting Zante with her family since 2012 and had met Gabriel before when she was younger, but had not recognised him. Beth posted her and Gabriel's story on social media, in a video that has gathered more than 500,000 views. One commenter said: 'Greek men are built differently, you'll be together forever.' Another said: 'Marry him and move back to Greece.' A third added: 'I witnessed a true love story.' It comes after a woman who fell 'madly in love' with a holiday rep during a girls' trip to Turkey moved 2,000 miles to start a new life with him - and now they're planning their wedding. Erin Milton, 21, was won over by holiday entertainer, Aymen Boudjouraf, 24, during a love-struck trip in September 2022. Love blossomed after the club rep invited Erin and a pal on a disco bar crawl around the popular southern coastal resort of Antalya on the first day of their trip. They spent the rest of the holiday together and after returning home 'heartbroken', Erin made the spontaneous decision to quit her university court and move to Turkey just two months later. After a whirlwind romance, Beth and Gabriel (pictured with Beth's friend) now live together in the UK The loved up pair are now engaged and living together in Tunisia, Africa. Erin, from Birmingham, said: 'There was an instant connection between me and Aymen. As soon as I got back to the UK, I just didn't feel happy and I just knew that I wanted to be over there with him. 'Now we're engaged and can't wait to start the rest of our lives together.' After returning home from her £1,000, seven-day holiday, Erin felt 'lost' without her new boyfriend. The pair spent hours each day on the phone to each other but after two months of separation, Erin, an online English teacher, decided to drop out of her Birmingham City University course. She plucked up the courage to tell her parents and bought a £70 one-way plane ticket to Turkey, departing 48 hours later. After Erin arrived in Turkey, the couple spent a week living in a hotel before moving into a £150-a-month apartment, but it was during the first three weeks that she began to feel 'lonely'. She said: 'Aymen took the first two days off work to show me around the area and to teach me the basics of the Turkish language. 'But after that, he was working seven days a week, and although the neighbours would often come over, I felt lonely being in the apartment all day on my own.' Four months later the couple uprooted again and settled in Guzeloba, Turkey. Erin said: 'We were so happy there because it was a lovely area and the community were great. 'But in February 2023, my work applied for a residency visa for me and I had a text two months later to say that this was declined. 'I felt my whole come crashing down, and I cried for days because I was scared we were going to be separated. 'I had to move back to England at the end of April for three months whilst I waited for my tourist visa to renew.' Three months later, in August 2023, she was reunited with Aymen - only to find his residency in Turkey had been declined after three years of living in the country. The pair had just 10 days to find somewhere else to live but 'complications' forced them to overstay their visas for four months. 'We had so much to sort out in such a short time and it was impossible to do in 10 days,' Erin said. 'As Aymen has an Algerian passport, there were a lot of countries that were already off the list but we were not going to let this break us. 'After days of searching, we discovered that Tunisia was there best option, and even though neither of us had visited the country before, we were determined to make it work.' On 11 September 2023, Aymen, who now works as translator, proposed to Erin after renting out a private beach. A month later they moved to Tunisia to start their new life together.
