Wimbledon scrapped 'Middle Sunday' for key reason with matches played today
Wimbledon decided to scrap a long-running tradition for the 2022 tournament, allowing tennis fans another day to enjoy the action at the All England Lawn Tennis Club Wimbledon is a tournament defined by its traditions, but as we've seen this year, the All England Lawn Tennis Club is not afraid of evolving. One of the main talking points this year has been the scrapping of human line judges in favour of HawkEye technology. It has caused a ripple, with 300 line judges losing their jobs and players like Emma Raducanu and Jack Draper questioning the accuracy of the system. Along with its well-dressed line judges, strawberries and cream and Henman Hill, Wimbledon used to be known for its Middle Sunday. Previously, play used to cease at the end of the first week during the two-week tournament, providing a lull in the frantic action. That contributed to Manic Monday, when all men's and women's fourth-round matches would take place on the same day. But all that changed in 2022, when Wimbledon organisers decided to drop the day off. Previously, since the Grand Slam's inception in 1877, Middle Sunday had only hosted play on only four occasions, in 1991, 1997, 2004 and 2016. Those were all down to wet weather, which had washed out play earlier in the week, meaning time was required to catch up. But back in April 2021, the All England Lawn Tennis Club took the decision to scrap Middle Sunday, preferring to spread the action out over 14 days, rather than 13. Explaining the call, the AELTC said that advances in grass technology had led to improved courts and no need for a rest day. 'It's important at this stage of the development of the sport that Wimbledon should be even more accessible to the people who want to access it and at the times at which they are best able to,' AELTC chairman, Ian Hewitt, said. 'We consider that it's in the best interests of the tennis fans that Wimbledon should be available to be watched and attended throughout that middle weekend.' Chief executive Sally Boulton added: "Over time Wimbledon has continuously evolved to meet changing demands and behaviours of our fans – always changing, always staying the same is something we talk about often. We want more of this wonderful event to be available to more people around the world to share in the joy of the Championships. "Including Middle Sunday permanently in our schedule will allow us to do just that and become a new tradition which we hope we can become immensely proud of. It enables us to do more with the second Monday, which is known as 'manic' for good reason." Having another day of play obviously also has a financial incentive for the AELTC, who can welcome tennis fans into the venue for an extra day. This year, there will be some great matches on offer on Sunday, with Sonay Kartal playing Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova on Centre Court before world No.1 Aryna Sabalenka and defending champion Carlos Alcaraz take to the court.

Nadal stopped Wimbledon interview after debate as he issued Grand Slam reminder
Rafael Nadal has been one of tennis' biggest names for two decades and the Spaniard took issue when a reporter asked him about whether he deserved to be playing on Centre Court Rafael Nadal famously felt the need to remind a reporter than he was in fact the World No 2 and the winner of 18 Grand Slams when he was asked if his appearance on Centre Court was justified. Back at the championships in 2019 the Spaniard took issue with a question that appeared to call his status into debate. 'Manic Monday' has caused a scheduling headache for Wimbledon organisers as all 16 fourth round matches across both the men's and women's draw take place on the same day. Ash Barty, now retired by then the women's No 1, had been playing on an outside court. Fresh off winning the French Open the Australian found herself on Court 2 for the second time in four matches and was beaten 3-6 6-2 6-3 by little-known American Alison Riske. It ignited debate over whether her match should've been playing in front of a bigger round as opposed to Nadal's 6-2 6-2 6-2 routine win over Joao Sousa. Nadal certainly had no interest in giving the politically correct answer when asked about whether Barty was deserving of the Centre Court slot. Nadal was asked the question and then responded: "Can we predict the future or not?" The reporter then reminded him that Barty was the world No 1. The Spaniard quickly hit back: "I am the world No 2 and I won 18 Grand Slams. My answer is not no or yes, my answer is they have to make a decision. But you are putting Ashleigh Barty in front of me. Both decisions would've been good. In the world of tennis today, honestly, my feeling is today I am little bit more than Ashleigh Barty, even if Ashleigh Barty is the first (ranked) player in the world and she already won in the French Open and she is playing unbelievably good. "But we can't create polemics every single day about decisions that they have to take. At the end of the day they have to make a decision. A day like today, everybody is playing, Djokovic wasn't playing on Centre. On the first day I had to play on Court One, so everyday is a decision." Barty meanwhile took a different approach when quizzed and said: "Scheduling is out of my control. I'll play on any court I'm scheduled on. Obviously scheduling is very difficult. There are so many incredible matches all the fans and all the people want to watch, and players want to be a part of. For us, the tennis court is the same size. Court 2 is a beautiful court. I enjoyed my time out there." Barty would emerge victorious on her next visit to Wimbledon two years later, beating Karolina Pliskova to win her second Grand Slam.

35 years ago: Sinéad O'Connor hit No.1 in the US with Nothing Compares 2 U
This week 35 years ago, Sinéad O'Connor kicked off a four-week run at No.1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 Chart with her iconic rendition of the Prince-penned track 'Nothing Compares 2 U'. The single, which featured on Sinéad's second album, I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got, topped charts around the world and has since been listed among the greatest songs of all time. To mark its anniversary, we're looking back at some special Hot Press reflections on 'Nothing Compares 2 U'. Over the years, Prince provided several memorable hits for other artists, including Manic Monday for The Bangles and Nasty Girl for Vanity 6. Perhaps the most iconic of all, however, was Nothing Compares 2 U, which became a career-defining smash for the extraordinary Sinéad O'Connor. Originally an obscure soul ballad tucked away on an album by funk group The Family, O'Connor and Bristolian trip-hop pioneer Nellee Hooper gave the track a dramatic new arrangement, topped off by O'Connor's epic, heart-wrenching vocals. Niall Stokes on 'Nothing Compares 2 U' published in Hot Press in July 2023, as part of a tribute to Sinad O'Connor: 1990. A week into the new year, Chrysalis released the headline single from Sinéad's second album, I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got, her version of Prince's song, 'Nothing Compares 2 U.' The accompanying video was a masterstroke. Shot by John Maybury, it consists almost entirely of a close-up ofSinéad'ss face. As she navigates the song and delivers the lyrics, the emotional shifts are visible in the young singer's baleful expression. And then she hits the opening lines of the final verse. All the flowers you planted, Mama, she sang, In the back yard / All died when you went away…Sinéad would later say that singing the word Mama had reminded her of her own mother, who had died in a car accident early in 1985. That caused a tear to flow down one cheek. The camera didn't flinch. As the song neared its climax, a second tear flowed down the other cheek. It was a moment of accidental pop profundity, a marriage of music and video that achieved a riveting impact on what was, suddenly, the ultimate break-up song. The video captured the imagination, especially among the emerging generation of young women, catapulting the single to the top of the charts worldwide. Sinéad O'Connor was the hottest star on the planet. I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got followed, going to No.1 in almost 20 countries and selling over 2 million copies in the US alone. Sinad O'Connor on 'Nothing Compares 2 U' originally published in Hot Press in 2000: I still get told that the video for Nothing Compares 2 U is a landmark in videomaking, that it still stands up. Which is amazing and quite funny, because the concepts we had for it were not remotely what happened in the end. What happened was that during one of the setups, we originally had about 15, and all the emotion of the song kind of came up for me. All the associations I had, and all the things I'd been thinking about, that linked me with the song, suddenly came together at once. Cos, you know, I guess I'm the sort of performer where the stuff I do is quite emotional and all. I only sing songs that mean something to me personally. I'm not really, if you like, an Ooh, baby baby kind of singer. So I was sitting there, doing this one shot, and suddenly all the emotion of it occurred to me, and I couldn't help having a little cry for a minute. And in the end, when they looked at the rushes, they decided to just go with that one shot, which had never been done before. But it wasn't in the plan. Mind you, it wasn't in the plan to be crying, either. An extract from the late Bill Graham's review of I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got for Hot Press (1990): …the magnificent 'Nothing Compares 2 U' will endure long past most pop hits' natural radio shelf-life exactly because this song of supplication also so acutely conveys an undercurrent of sulky defiance in its confrontation of love love. I've already heard it sung on the last bus, and that's the ultimate compliment…
