Jagannathpur gears up for Rath Yatra with tight security, eco push
1 2 Ranchi: The district administration has intensified preparations for the Jagannathpur Rath Yatra, scheduled from June 27 to July 5, with a focus on crowd management, sanitation, eco-friendly practices, and structural safety. On Sunday, DC Manjunath Bhajantri conducted an inspection of the 40-ft-high chariot and held a review meeting with senior officials and temple committee members. The chariot, crafted by artisans from Puri and Jharkhand, is nearing completion and will soon be stationed on the Jagannath temple premises for final rituals. Made of sal, mango, and jamun wood, the Rs 7 lakh Rath features eight wheels for balance: two in front, four at the centre, and two at the back, and a top singhasan (throne) for deities Jagannath, Subhadra and Balabhadra. It will be pulled manually by devotees. "The Rath's crown will be decorated with red and yellow cloth from Puri, topped with a brass kalash, Sudarshan Chakra, and a ceremonial flag. Figures of Jay-Vijay (doorkeepers), wooden horses, and elephants will adorn the front, with an 'ulta suga' (parrot) placed facing north-south, as per temple tradition," said chief priest Thakur Sudhanshu Nath Shahdeo The DC's inspection included a walk-through of the procession route from Jagannath Temple to Mausi Bari, where he instructed officials to ensure clear passage for devotees, install barricades, and deploy volunteers at critical points. Arrangements for ambulances, fire tenders, drinking water, portable toilets, and 24/7 electricity have been finalized. SSP Chandan Sinha confirmed that CCTV cameras and watch towers are being installed, and police-magistrate teams will be posted at sensitive spots. "We've planned restricted vehicular entry and traffic diversions to ensure smooth movement during the Rath pull," he said. Vendors have been directed to avoid plastic items like disposable cups and plates. The administration has made biodegradable plates (donas and pattals) mandatory. Every stall must maintain its own dustbin, and solid waste teams will be on standby. On the other hand, Ranchi Municipal Corporation is also conducting a special sanitation drive around the Dhurwa temple area. Measures include drain cleaning, garbage removal, bleaching powder and fogging, along with deployment of water tankers, mobile toilets, and dustbins to ensure cleanliness and convenience for devotees.

Single-use plastic items banned, ID cards must for vendors at Rath Mela this year
1 2 Ranchi: Deputy commissioner Manjunath Bhajantri on Friday asked district officials to ensure a complete ban on the use of single use plastic items and thermocol products during the Jagannathpur Rath Mela in Dhurwa, scheduled to begin on June 27. Chief minister Hemant Soren, governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar and other VIPs are expected to attend. Notably, manufacture, sale and use of single-use plastics is banned in Jharkhand since 2017. Vendors will be allowed to use only biodegradable materials like leaf plates, bamboo containers, and earthen utensils. Enforcement teams will conduct routine checks and can impose fines or shut stalls for violations. To strengthen safety, watch towers and loudspeakers will be installed at five main entry points. CCTV cameras will be placed throughout the mela area and along the Rath Yatra route. Local police stations have been instructed to ensure surveillance and rapid response, while a dedicated police control room will remain functional throughout the event. Bio-toilets will be placed at various points, and deep borewells will be dug to ensure clean drinking water. Temporary electric and generator connections will power stalls and lighting arrangements Over 1,800 stalls and 25 amusement rides will be a part of the week-long fair, organisers said. Sale and consumption of meat at the fair will be banned. Stall operators must procure eco-friendly containers and comply with waste management guidelines. Each stall and volunteer will be issued official identity cards by the mela committee. All amusement ride operators need to furnish valid safety certificates. "No ride will be permitted without safety clearance. Medical teams will be on standby with ambulances on the fair premises. A fire tender will remain stationed at the venue am," Bhajantri said.

Schools in Ranchi, 4 other districts to remain closed tomorrow as IMD warns of heavy rain
Schools in five districts of Jharkhand including Ranchi will remain closed on Friday as the IMD has forecast heavy rainfall, an official said. All schools in Ranchi, Khunti and West Singhbhum districts will remain closed on Friday while in East Singhbhum and Saraikela-Kharswan districts schools will suspend classes up to class 8. Schools in Ranchi and Khunti remained closed on Thursday due to incessant rainfall from Wednesday. The IMD has issued a 'red' alert (heavy to extremely heavy rainfall) for Ranchi from 8.30 am on Thursday to 8.30 am on Friday. Mark attendance on portal or face salary cuts, govt teachers told
1 2 Ranchi: In a stern warning to all govt schoolteachers across the district, the Ranchi district education department has asked them to mark their daily attendance on the e-Vidya Vahini portal or face salary cuts. Teachers not marking attendance on the portal will be deemed absent for the day and their salaries will be deducted. Deputy commissioner Manjunath Bhajantri on Friday said the decision was taken after receiving multiple reports of non-compliance from various schools across. "Despite several reminders, many teachers were lax in updating their attendance on the digital system, hampering real-time monitoring of school functioning," he said. The directive states that teachers failing to mark their attendance on the platform will face proportionate salary deductions for the days missed. The department shared that approximately 70% of teachers are marking their attendance on the portal while 25% are non-compliant. Around 5% of the teachers across the district are on approved leaves. District superintendent of education, Badal Raj, said, "Anyone not on approved leave and failing to mark attendance on the portal, regardless of the reason, such as late arrival, will be marked absent if no prior intimation is given. The e-Vidya Vahini platform has been designed to bring transparency and efficiency in the functioning of schools. Teachers must understand that accurate and timely attendance is their responsibility. " Raj added, "This is a step to ensure discipline and data accuracy. Many govt initiatives like mid-day meal planning, student-teacher ratio, and learning outcome monitoring depend on real-time teacher attendance data." Register with local police stns, DJs told
Ranchi: The district administration has asked all the disc jockey (DJ) operators in Ranchi to get registered with the local police stations by June 24, in a step to control noise pollution and law and order. DC Manjunath Bhajantri has issued the instructions in view of a high court order. He stated that DJs should compulsorily get themselves registered by June 24 or else action would be taken against them. The DJs must submit the self-declaration forms with their identity cards, business details and information about the equipments to the nearest police station and promise to follow the HC's order. While hearing a PIL on July 16, 2024, the HC had observed that DJ music is causing difficulties to senior persons and patients, particularly people suffering from heart problems and ordered the govt to not grant permission to DJ at processions.
