Tennis-Big hits, small margins as Rublev rethinks grasscourt game
* HT Image Rublev reflects on evolving grasscourt challenges * Russian notes increased power and speed in modern tennis * Upcoming match against Mannarino to test Rublev's patience By Ossian Shine LONDON, - Andrey Rublev got the win but no easy ride at Wimbledon on Wednesday, as he fought past Lloyd Harris 6-7 6-4 7-6 6-3 in a bruising second-round duel on Court Three. The 14th seed, who has reached 10 Grand Slam quarter-finals without converting any into a semi-final appearance, came off court sounding less relieved than reflective. "Now the level is different," Rublev said. "Everybody knows how to hit the ball. Everybody can be dangerous. Everybody knows how to serve over 200 . Now it's more about who is more stable, more focused, who is more ready." Rublev beat South African Harris at Wimbledon in 2021 but the intervening years have levelled the playing field in ways that surprised even the experienced Russian. "Three years ago, I felt like if I just focused, there was no chance I would lose. Today, even with full focus, it was really tough to beat him," he said. "The level is different. Everybody knows how to shoot hard now. They are going for the shots. In or out, it doesn't matter, 50/50, because then they know that they serve 200 , they hold the serve. "Before it was more , more strategy, how you play, how you defend, how you bring the balls back. Now, okay, you have tactic. Okay, I want to play like this. The guy serve 220, ace. Okay, you return. He shoot full power next set. "Tactics don't really work that much anymore. Only when it's slower courts, and then yes. Then we see more rallies, then more tactics. Then the guy who is more prepared physically normally wins. Here when it's fast, now we see that everybody can shoot the ball hard, and that's why everybody have chances." Next up is crafty French veteran Adrian Mannarino who promises to test Rublev's patience in entirely different ways. "We've played many times. He can drive everybody crazy," Rublev said. "He's super talented. You need a lot of patience. He knows how to defend well, how to bring the balls back. That makes you go for extra risk, which makes you miss more." With the draw opening up and the grass playing fast, Rublev may never have a better opportunity to finally reach a Grand Slam semi-final – assuming he can navigate the new reality of tennis where everyone can "shoot the ball hard." What to expect from Universal's new year-round horror experience in Vegas
AI-assisted summary Unlike Halloween Horror Nights, Horror Unleashed offers a permanent, immersive horror experience with four haunted houses and interactive scare zones. Haunted houses include Universal Monsters, The Exorcist: Believer, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Scarecrow: The Reaping. The experience is designed for all types of horror fans, with varying levels of engagement and is not recommended for children under 13. Nate Stevenson remembers it being a big deal to rent movies as a kid and his dad bringing home a stack of VHS tapes on weekends. 'Three or four were obviously for my mom,' Stevenson recalled. 'But then he would always go, 'And then I got one creepy old movie' ... and then me and my dad would just sit and watch the horror films.' TJ Mannarino shared similar memories with his dad. 'That was a bonding thing,' Mannarino said. 'We used to sit around and watch the black-and-white Universal monster movies, and it got me excited about those strange characters.' Mannarino and Stevenson still get giddy about horror. Now, they're creating a new way for fellow fans to connect with it, as two of the masterminds behind Universal's first year-round horror experience in Las Vegas. Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle. In an exclusive interview with USA TODAY, they shared more about what guests can expect when Universal Horror Unleashed opens in August. How is Horror Unleashed different from Halloween Horror Nights? Universal Horror Unleashed won't just be a longer version of Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights. 'You're a little bit locked in at the parks,' said Stevenson, show director for Universal's Creative Development Group. Both he and Mannarino have worked on Horror Nights for years. 'You know what works and you go for it, and the turnaround is so fast for the next year that you're just on to the next year ... But this really gave us a chance to kind of innovate and think outside the box and say, 'How can we take this amazing thing that we've got and take it to the next level?'" With Universal Horror Unleashed, they had a chance to build a permanent home for horror, from the ground up, in a newly expanded area of the Area15 entertainment district off the Las Vegas Strip. 'To be on the side of creating it and envisioning it is a dream come true, or a nightmare,' said Mannarino, vice president of Entertainment Art and Design for Universal Orlando Resort. The story begins even before guests enter the building, which is set as a production warehouse where horror film props were stored, a nod to Universal's century-long legacy of horror films. "The overarching story, just for Horror Unleashed in general, is that there's kind of a parallel world that lives beside ours, and in that world – we call it the shadow world – all your nightmares are actually realities,' Stevenson said. He explained that in some areas, like Sin City and this production warehouse in particular, the veil between the worlds is thinner. 'They stuck so many spiritually charged things in this warehouse that it erupted and it broke that veil between the shadow world and our world, so when you're in the warehouse, some of those creatures and those monsters and those things have spilled out from the shadow world,' he said. How many haunted houses are there? There are four haunted houses at Universal Horror Unleashed, with a mix of intellectual property and original content, like Horror Nights. Universal Monsters: 'Guests will pass through the crumbling mausoleum of famed monster hunter Van Helsing and into the cursed domains of creatures that defined the genre,' Universal shared in a press release. 'From the shadowy halls of Castle Dracula, to the sandy tombs guarded by The Mummy, to the crackling lab where Frankenstein and The Bride still draw breath – this haunted house resurrects the most legendary monsters of all time in one continuous nightmare.' The Exorcist: Believer: Based on the latest film in the Exorcist franchise, guests will follow the journey of two girls who've been possessed, all the way to their exorcism, which includes disappearing wall special effect that reveals a hidden hellscape, according to a promo video for the house. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: Guests will enter the farmhouse from the franchise's first film and, following that film closely, come face to face with Leatherface as well as parts of his world that weren't on screen. Scarecrow: The Reaping: Based on a fan-favorite, original Universal Halloween Horror Nights house, 'It's set in the Dust Bowl era, when the farmers ravaged the land, but in our story, the land has come back to life to wreak its revenge on you,' Stevenson said in a promo video. Beyond the haunted houses, there will be four immersive areas with their own themes. 'One is kind of more classic, which is where the monsters come in – the classic Universal monsters – and then one is more kind of like a slasher 80s sort of feel, and another is more of kind of like a poltergeist sort of feel, and then another is more traditional and circusy, where Jack shows up,' Stevenson said, referring to Jack the Clown, a Halloween Horror Nights icon. Getting into character Each space will also feature various characters with fully fleshed, interconnected stories that guests can engage with. 'In the parks, you have all these incredible characters out in the streets and they're running and they're scaring you, but it's kind of like a moment in time. They scare you and then they go,' Stevenson said. 'But with these characters, you can actually walk up to them and chat with them ... get a couple of fun anecdotes about their life and move on – if that's the level of immersion you want – or you can sit there and talk to them for 15 minutes and learn all about the warehouse and all about the story.' There will also be uniquely themed areas for food and drinks. 'I could see people buying a ticket and just going out there and hanging out for the night because it's such a cool environment,' Stevenson said. 'I just want a drink at the Boiler Bar that turns into a monster and becomes this really cool show moment ... and watch people get scared and have drinks with my friends and then walk over to Jack's (Alley) Bar and watch his show.' These are all opening attractions, but from the beginning, Universal has said the venue will feature continuously updated horror experiences. 'It has to evolve. It has to change. How does that change and what that cadence is, I think that's still for us to tell you, as we learn also,' Mannarino said. Halloween Horror Nights 2025: Everything you need to know Room for everyone For now, guests can expect something different each visit, depending on how they engage. 'Spend as much time, come back as many times as they want, but feel like this place also has a life and it grows and it changes, and so every time you come back, you do see the world differently,' Mannarino said. Experiences will also change depending on who guests go with. 'In your group, you might have the die hard who's always going to be the first person to line, but you always have the other person who's like, 'No, no. I'm going to be in the back, and I'm going to be hiding behind four other people,''' he said. Universal Horror Unleashed is meant for all types of horror fans, from casual thrillseekers to lore-loving super fans. 'We see ourselves in you, because that's who we are,' Mannarino said. Is there an age restriction for Universal Horror Unleashed? The destination's website warns that like Horror Nights, the 'experience may be too intense for young children and is not recommended for children under the age of 13.' How much are Universal Horror Unleashed tickets? Universal Horror Unleashed opens August 14. Tickets are already on sale and start at $69 for one-time entry to each house ($59 for Nevada residents) and $99 for unlimited access to houses.

Podcast host blasted for 'too soon' Pope tweet hours after pontiff's death
A conservative podcaster has caused controversy for criticizing Pope Francis 's progressive reforms within hours of the pontiff's death. Joey Mannarino made the remarks on X Monday, where he wrote Francis's passing at the age of 88 was merely a good 'chance to get a conservative into [the] position' - as opposed to a cause for mourning. He further branded the fallen clergyman a 'Communi[st]' - spawning an almost immediate firestorm. Many of those upset were Catholic conservatives who vowed to unfollow Mannarino. 'Shameful lack of Christianity in this post,' one user wrote in reply - after Mannarino openly pined for a pontiff 'who will preach Catholicism rather than Communism.' 'Not less than Pope Francis displayed when he tried to destroy the church,' the host of The Joey Mannarino Show replied - doubling down to his more than 600,000 followers. 'He did no such thing,' someone insisted - paving the way for a flurry of replies from other users likely in mourning. 'I usually agree with your posts, Joey, but this is an L take,' wrote one such user. 'Like him or not, he was still OUR pope. Please don't make light of his death. He was a man of God that did his absolute best. I will pray that you reflect and repent.' 'Bit early for a post like this,' someone else sniped, rushing to the defense of a figure who rattled the Catholic Church's conservatives by preaching acceptance toward gay Christians and championing the rights of immigrants and the poor. He further branded the fallen clergyman a 'Communi[st]' - causing an immediate firestorm. Vows to unfollow the vocal Trump supporter ensued, as did other scathing responses 'No matter what you or I thought of him as a pope, a man has just died,' the user went on. 'Allow him to pass into God's hand in peace.' 'Save this talk for another day. Let's all mourn,' said someone else. 'Terrible, disrespectful post,' fumed another. 'Pope Francis was a humanitarian and a genuinely holy man. May he rest in eternal peace.' The steady stream of criticism paved the way for more tweets from Mannarino, a radio host turned 'political commentator' who bills himself as a proud 'Italian-American'. 'I just found out that any male Catholic is eligible to be the pope. You do not have to be a priest or a cardinal. So, if anybody would like to vote for me, I will be officially announcing my candidacy!' he joked - spawning more pushback from more since spectators. 'You are a classless grifter,' wrote one user, after Mannarino used the pope's death to dramatically declare: 'WE WILL MAKE THE CATHOLIC CHURCH GREAT AGAIN!' 'How can you make the Catholic Church great again when you can't even pull off a toupee?' quipped one commenter, leading Mannarino to bring up a more conservative cardinal he sees as better-suited. The steady stream of criticism paved the way for series of tweets from Mannarino, a radio host turned political commentator who bills himself as a proud 'Italian-American' He also questioned whether 'Democrats lit their candle to worship Kilmar Abrego Garcia today yet?' - referring to the alleged MS-13 member who has surfaced as the center of a separate bipartisan battle centered around Trump's immigration policies. 'Cardinal [Robert] Sarah would be an incredible Pope,' he added of 79-year-old priest from Guinea being floated as a possible front-runner for the job - a move that would make him the first black pope in history. 'The best choice for Pope is a sub-Saharan African man from Guinea,' Mannarino asserted, clarifying for his conservative fanbase, 'that's actually the truth... he is not a DEI pick.' 'He's 80 so I'm not sure if that's a viable option, but he's about as conservative as they get,' he continued, before offering some quotes from the cardinal showing his ideological differences from Francis, the first Latin-American pope in history. '"Those who use the Bible to justify mass immigration are bewitched",' Mannarino quoted. '"Gender ideology is a luciferian refusal to receive a sexual nature from God." 'Both quotes from Cardinal Robert Sarah of Guinea,' he continued. 'Make him the next Pope,' the former R&B disc jockey eventually declared. Other posts from Mannarino show him to be a MAGA-supporting Islamophobe from Philadelphia, who made the jump into podcasting - like so many others - during Trump's first campaign. In a pinned post to Instagram featuring him standing alongside the president, the self-purported political strategist described how this career shift occurred. 'In 2015, when this man walked down the golden escalator in Trump Tower, I was a radio personality on an R&B station in Philadelphia,' he recalled. 'It was because of his campaign that I even began to pay attention to politics. 'At the time, I was a registered Democrat who had only voted once before (for Obama). 'Because of the campaign that this man ran, my life changed forever. 'I left the radio industry due to being unable to voice my opinions and went full-time into the political space. 'I've been doing that for seven years. 'And while it's cost me many old friends and family, it's given me more opportunities than one could ever imagine. No such kind words were offered for the man who just died, despite his work to improve the church and calls for world peace. During what ended up being his final public appearance at the Vatican Sunday, the pope asked for peace in Ukraine and the Middle East 'I've been able to meet and work with some of the most incredible fighters this nation has to offer. 'Simply put, this man changed my life.' No such kind words were offered for the man who just died, despite his work to improve the church and calls for world peace. During what ended up being his final public appearance at the Vatican Sunday, the pope asked for peace in Ukraine and the Middle East.
