3-Storey Bldg Reduced To Rubble In N Delhi, 1 Dead
New Delhi: A 45-year-old man died when a three-storey building collapsed early Friday morning in north Delhi's Sadar Bazar. The deceased, Manoj Sharma alias Pappu, worked in the building, housing shops and godowns, for nearly 30 years. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The building was divided into three parts. Police were alerted around 1.55am about the collapse at Pul Mithai. The structure, comprising a ground floor and two upper storeys, housed three shops on the ground floor and godowns above. The fire department deployed three tenders and 18 firefighters, and Sharma was rescued and rushed to Bara Hindu Rao Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. Local shopkeepers and residents reported hearing a loud noise and feeling the ground shake when the building collapsed. Jatin Sharma, a shopkeeper in a nearby crafts store, recalled, "Around 2am, I heard a crash and saw smoke rising. I rushed outside to find that the old commercial building has collapsed." Once bustling with shops and godowns specialising in bags and canvas cloths, the building has now reduced to rubble. A patri bazaar selling masalas and dry fruits operated just outside it during the day. The collapse has also claimed Mundrika Kumar's truck. The 27-year-old driver just parked his vehicle and stepped out for tea when the crash took place. To his horror, Kumar realised that his truck was crushed under the collapsed structure. "Suddenly, everything went dark. I ran back in panic to find my truck completely destroyed under the debris," he said. Shopkeepers in the whole area, a marketplace in North Delhi, suspect that the ongoing Delhi Metro tunnelling work for the Janakpuri West-RK Ashram Marg corridor contributed to the collapse. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Many buildings in the area have developed cracks and structural damages due to the construction, residents alleged. Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, however, claimed that they declared the building unsafe even before beginning the construction and requested evacuation. According to a DMRC statement, the building was subsequently evacuated and the necessary subsoil grouting and external supports were provided at the site to stabilise the structure and mitigate any risk due to tunnelling. It added that an ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh was announced by DMRC for the next of kin of the deceased. Local shopkeepers alleged that they had been affected by the construction-related holes and cracks on their premises. "A few days ago, goods fell through a hole in our godown floor. Although the metro authorities filled the gap, we've incurred losses worth lakhs," said Deepak Chawla, a 52-year-old employee at a godown operating in the area for six decades. Many people claimed that the lane where the incident took place had been grappling with infrastructural inadequacies since the beginning of the metro work. Majinder Pal Singh, president of New Qutub Road Transporters Welfare Association, said, "People have been crying, but nothing has changed."

DMRC announces Rs 5 lakh ex-gratia for victim of building collapse near Azad Market
New Delhi [India], July 11 (ANI): The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has announced an ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh for the family of a man who died after a building collapsed near Pul Mithai in North Delhi's Lohia Chowk area around the early hours of Friday. The deceased has been identified as Manoj Sharma, also known as Pappu, aged 45. He was an employee at shop number 7A, owned by Gulshan Mahajan, and had been working there for the past 30 years. The collapsed building, located at Tokri Walan in Pul Mithai near Bara Hindu Rao, had three shops on the ground floor and godowns on the first floor. The shops were part of the Azad Market area and dealt in bags and canvas cloth. According to DMRC, the buildings, which were being used as shops and offices, were already marked as unsafe and had been evacuated before the incident. These structures were located within the influence zone of the ongoing tunnelling work for the Janakpuri West-RK Ashram Marg corridor of the Delhi Metro. In a statement, DMRC said it had sent letters on June 12, 2025, to the building owners, warning them that the structures were in a very poor condition and should be evacuated as a safety measure. The buildings were vacated accordingly. To minimise risks during tunnelling, DMRC had also carried out subsoil grouting and added external supports at the site. Despite these precautions, the buildings collapsed during the night. Rescue and debris removal operations began immediately with help from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Delhi Police. The area has been barricaded for safety. The tunnelling work at the site is being carried out by M/s AFCONS. DMRC has said that a detailed investigation will be conducted into the incident. Police have also registered an FIR under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and an investigation is underway to find out the cause of the collapse. (ANI)
