4 days after Kolkata rape, cops seize hockey stick, clothing of suspects; collect DNA

KOLKATA: The hockey stick with which ex-Trinamool Chhatra Parishad union president Manojit Mishra inflicted a head injury on the 24-year-old Kolkata law student he and two others allegedly gang-raped on campus last Wednesday now sits inside an evidence bag at Lalbazar, the city police headquarters. So do the red kurta, light brown six-pocket trousers and black shorts the prime suspect was purportedly wearing during the crime. In four days since the assault, Kolkata Police's special investigation team has moved with urgency and meticulousness that contrast with its contentious handling of the RG Kar Medical College rape-murder case last Aug. Police said Sunday they had collected DNA samples from all three suspects and seized items of clothing from their homes in Kalighat, Tiljala and Howrah, reports Tamaghna Banerjee. From the guard room floor where the crime occurred, forensic teams have retrieved hair strands, said to be evidence of how the survivor fought back before giving up. "I just lay like a dead body," she wrote in her complaint. CCTV caught her being dragged back to room Police said Sunday they had collected DNA samples from all three suspects and seized items of clothing from their homes in Kalighat, Tiljala and Howrah. From the guard room floor where the crime occurred, forensic teams have retrieved hair strands, said to be evidence of how the survivor fought back before giving up. 'I just lay like a dead body,' she wrote in her complaint. The real smoking gun? Mishra's cellphone. Co-suspects Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukherjee – both law students – allegedly filmed the assault on Mishra's orders, making sure to capture the survivor's face clearly in the frame. Those videos, sent for verification to the cyber forensics lab in Kolkata's Salt Lake, tell a story that contradicts Mishra's claims of 'consensual sex' with the woman whose refusal to accept his marriage proposal allegedly triggered the assault. CCTV footage backs the survivor's version of what happened between 7.30pm and 10.50pm Wednesday. Cameras captured her bolting for the main gate, only to be dragged back to the guard room. They also caught the colour of Mishra's kurta, later matched to the one seized from his Kalighat home. Based on the footage, investigators have calculated that 25 students were on campus that day, and seven were in the union room just before the assault. Police have asked authorities of the south Kolkata law college to provide their names, phone numbers and addresses. Mishra's phone also revealed more than just Wednesday's horror. Sources said investigators found what his circle already knew — a cache of doctored photos of female students, their faces superimposed on pornographic images and shared on WhatsApp groups. The nine-member SIT led by an officer of the rank of assistant commissioner spent Sunday at Pramit's Howrah home, combing through his computer for more videos. Neighbours protested, but the team – bolstered by the addition of four sub-inspectors, one of them a woman officer – stayed put for two hours. What they found there is still to be disclosed. Sources said a relative of the survivor's family told police that they were satisfied with the probe for now and are expecting a speedy trial.

Filmed private videos, body-shamed girls, faced molestation complaints: How 'Mango's' campus abuse was ignored for years; a toxic mix of clout, impunity

NEW DELHI: Even before the horrific 'gang-rape' allegations against Manojit Mishra stunned Kolkata, many students at the law college knew him not for his legal acumen but for the unchecked power he allegedly wielded on campus — and the fear he instilled among women. A college insider has now revealed that Manojit, also known as 'Mango', had a long history of recording private moments of women, morphing their pictures and sharing them in WhatsApp groups for amusement and ridicule. 'He filmed private moments with women and showed them to his friends. He recorded almost everything. He and his aides used to click photos of women and post them in groups, body shaming and maligning them,' she said. "The party had been alerted too, but no action followed," the source said. Real influence stemmed from politics Manojit's fall from grace was neither sudden nor unpredictable. He first enrolled in 2007 and later rejoined the college in 2017, but reportedly dropped out midway during both stints. Despite being ousted from the college's Trinamool Chhatra Parishad unit in 2021 over rowdyism, he returned the following year — not as a student, but as a contractual staff member, armed with a governing body appointment letter. In 2022, he formally graduated and began practicing at Alipore court. But insiders say his real influence stemmed not from the law, but from politics. "He was the 121st candidate in a class with 120 seats. Everyone knew it. But no one questioned it, thanks to his political backing,' said a batchmate. A toxic mix of clout and impunity Even after the dissolution of the college's official Trinamool unit in 2017 — following an incident where Manojit allegedly led a group to vandalise the principal's office — his grip on campus only grew stronger. Sources say he operated without formal party designation, but acted as the de facto TMCP strongman on campus. Pramit, Manojit, Zaib He ran college WhatsApp groups where he allegedly removed students at will, used access to staff rooms, and organised events with full authority. Students claim that his leadership style was not only intimidating but deeply misogynistic. Estranged at home, feared on campus Back home in Kalighat, Manojit lived alone. His father, Robin Mishra — a local priest — had severed ties with him five years ago. The two live just four houses apart but haven't spoken in years. "Let the law take its course. If he's done it, let him be punished. The survivor is also someone's daughter," Robin said. Neighbours described Manojit as volatile and disruptive. 'There were always fights, drunken brawls, people screaming outside his house,' one said. 'One of the co-accused seen on TV was here recently after another drinking session.' His mother and sister had reportedly moved out years ago. His grandmother, who lived with him, passed away in 2023. (The victim's identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per Supreme court directives on cases related to sexual assault)

Kolkata gangrape case: Another TMC leader Madan Mitra makes SHOCKING remark, says ‘If that girl had not gone there…'

Kolkata gangrape case: Trinamool Congress leader Madan Mitra on Saturday said that the gangrape incident in Kolkata has sent a message to girls that they should not go to their college if it's closed and someone is calling them to offer them a position in the student unit. A female student was allegedly gang-raped inside the South Calcutta Law College in Kolkata's Kasba on Wednesday, June 25. 'This incident has sent a message to girls that if someone calls you when the college is closed offering you a position in the unit, then don't go, nothing good will come of it. If that girl had not gone there, this wouldn't have happened,' the TMC leader was quoted as saying by ANI. Blaming the law student for not informing before going out, Mitra said that if she did so the incident would not have happened. 'If she had informed someone before going or had taken a couple of friends with her, then this wouldn't have happened. The one who committed this dirty deed took advantage of the situation,' he said. Mitra's comments comes after TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee, already under fire for his 'boys will be boys' comment, said: 'If a friend rapes a friend, how can you ensure security?' The Trinamool leader distanced the party from the prime accused Manojit Mishra — a TMCP leader. 'TMC is a big party. Someone or the other is associated with Trinamool everywhere. We get our photos taken with everyone, but what's inside a person, only a psychologist can tell,' Mitra said. 'People get their photos clicked with TMC leaders and then start calling themselves TMC leaders too,' he added. The Kolkata police has formed a 5-member Special Investigation Team to probe into the Kolkata gangrape case involving the law student. The latest development came as the opposition parties mounted pressure on the ruling Trinamool Congress-led West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, and demanded her resignation and security for women at educational institutions. Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Pradip Kumar Ghosal of South Suburban Division (SSD) will lead the SIT. The three accused, Manojit Mishra, Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukhopadhyay, whom the police have named, have been sent to police custody till July 1.
