Thundershower warning for Puri as LoPAR forms over Bay of Bengal
BHUBANESWAR: A fresh low pressure area formed over north-west Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas of Odisha and West Bengal is set to bring widespread rains to the state over the next five to six days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Thursday. The low pressure along with the associated cyclonic circulation is likely to move west-northwestwards across north Odisha and adjoining Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh. Under the influence of the system, parts of Odisha are expected to receive heavy rainfall till July 2, the national weather forecaster said. Though there is no heavy rainfall warning for Puri during Rath Yatra on Friday, thunderstorm, lightning and gusty surface wind speeds reaching 30 kmph to 40 kmph may prevail in the district. While light to moderate rainfall or thundershower activity is likely to occur in many places of the state, heavy rainfall is expected in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh and Jharsuguda districts in the next 24 hours. 'The trough from northeast Arabian Sea to cyclonic circulation associated with the low pressure area over northwest Bay of Bengal will trigger heavy rains in the next six days,' said director of Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre, Manorama Mohanty. At least six districts, including Puri have recorded deficit rains between June 1 and 26. Malkangiri recorded 50 pc deficit rains, Nuapada 42 pc, Jharsuguda 30 per cent, Bargarh 28 pc and Balangir and Puri 24 pc each. The fresh low pressure area is expected to bring down the rainfall deficit in these districts, Mohanty said.

LoPAR-induced rain likely to dampen Rath Yatra
BHUBANESWAR: Rains induced by a low pressure area may play spoilsport during Rath Yatra on Friday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday said an upper air cyclonic circulation persists over north-west Bay of Bengal and adjoining north and under its influence, a low pressure area is likely to form over the same region within 24 hours. The second such low pressure to form over Bay of Bengal after arrival of southwest monsoon in the state on May 28, its intensity may not be very strong, said the weather experts. The regional met office has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorm, lightning and gusty surface wind speeds reaching 30 kmph to 40 kmph in four districts on Thursday. 'The low pressure area's intensity is likely to reduce from Friday onwards. Though heavy rainfall is unlikely to occur in Puri on the day of Rath Yatra, the town may experience a few spells of light to moderate rains or thundershower on that day,' said director of Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre, Manorama Mohanty. On the day, government officials held a meeting in the evening to discuss the anticipated rainfall activity on Friday. The police said barricades will be put in place to regulate the movement of devotees and prevent overcrowding, especially in areas prone to waterlogging. Besides, public address systems will be used to provide updates on the weather conditions and if there are any changes in the schedule of the rituals in case it rains. Odisha has recorded 7 per cent deficit rains between June 1 and 25. The fresh low pressure area is expected to bring down the rainfall deficit in the state.

Southwest Monsoon advances over Bihar, Eastern UP; torrential rains expected in several states
New Delhi [India], June 19 (ANI): The Southwest Monsoon has further advanced into most parts of Bihar and some more regions of eastern Uttar Pradesh as of June 19, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). According to the weather department, the deepening monsoon activity is set to bring very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall to isolated places across Gujarat, north Konkan, Madhya Maharashtra, West Bengal, and Odisha on Wednesday, with Jharkhand bracing for similar weather on both June 19 and 20. In East and Central India, extremely heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places over Jharkhand on June 19. In West India, extremely heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places over Konkan, ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra, Gujarat Region on June 19. In Northeast India, light to moderate rainfall at most places accompanied with thunderstorm, lightning and isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall will likely continue over Northeast India during next 7 days. In Northwest India, isolated heavy rainfall likely over Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, East Rajasthan during June 19-25, JammuKashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad on June 22-25th, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab during June 21-25, Haryana, Chandigarh during June 20-25 with very heavy rainfall on West Uttar Pradesh on June 19, East Uttar Pradesh on June 20-21, East Rajasthan on June 19-23, Uttarakhand on June 22, Himachal Pradesh on June 22-25. In South Peninsular India, IMD forecast isolated heavy rainfall likely over Kerala and Mahe on June 19 and during 22-25, Coastal Karnataka on June 19 and during June 21-25. Hot and humid conditions are very likely in isolated pockets of Tamil Nadu, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, Rayalaseema during June 19-21. Earlier on Wednesday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) of Bhubaneswar reported heavy rainfall across Odisha, with eight to nine places recording significant downpours in the last 24 hours. Manorama Mohanty, Director of IMD Bhubaneswar, stated that a well-marked low-pressure area over Gangetic West Bengal and its neighbourhood, persisting as of 8.30 hours IST on June 18, is likely to bring substantial rainfall to the state over the next two to three days. 'Heavy rainfall has occurred at eight to nine places in Odisha in the last 24 hours. A low-pressure area is formed over Gangetic West Bengal, which may cause the state to receive good rainfall in the next two to three days. Light to moderate rainfall may occur in most parts of the state in the next 24 hours. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Jharsuguda and Sambalpur on the 19th,' Mohanty said. (ANI)

Bhubaneswar: IMD on Friday said conditions are favourable for the advancement of the southwest monsoon over the state during the next three days. "Monsoon is likely to cover some parts of Odisha during the next three days due to favourable conditions," said Manorama Mohanty, head of the regional IMD centre here. Monsoon, which hit Odisha on May 28, two weeks in advance compared to its normal arrival date, slowed down soon after it covered only parts of some selected southern districts. Mohanty said many places in the state are likely to witness light to moderate rainfall during the next two days — Saturday and Sunday — under the influence of a trough line. "Thereafter, most places in the state are likely to experience rainfall in the subsequent two to three days, with heavy rain chances at isolated places in some districts," she said. "Besides, a warning of thunderstorm activities accompanied by lightning and gusty surface wind will also continue in several districts during the coming four to five days," Mohanty added. An IMD bulletin said there will be no change in day temperature during the next two days. Thereafter, the mercury will see a drop of 2-4 degrees Celsius. Cyclonic circulation over Bay of Bengal raises rain prospects
1 2 3 Bhubaneswar: A cyclonic circulation that has formed over southeast and adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a low-pressure area over the next few days, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The upper air cyclonic circulation persists at around 5.8 km above mean sea level and is being closely monitored by the met department in Bhubaneswar, said director Manorama Mohanty. The northern limit of the southwest monsoon continues to pass through Bhawanipatna and Puri, indicating that full monsoon onset over Odisha remains pending, the IMD bulletin said. Though isolated rainfall occurred across the state in the past 24 hours, temperature soared in interior regions. Sambalpur and Hirakud recorded the highest maximum temperature of 40.6 degrees Celsius. Jharsuguda and Nuapada also remained extremely hot, while Angul recorded rainfall of 18 mm in the past 24 hours. Rayagada (27 mm), Jajpur (20 mm) and Bhawanipatna (14.4 mm) also received notable rainfall. However, most districts saw dry spell during the day. The IMD has issued yellow warning for several districts, predicting thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) from June 8 to 13. Hot and humid conditions are also likely to persist, particularly in coastal and adjoining interior districts. Despite cloudy spells, maximum temperature is expected to remain unchanged across Odisha for the next 5-6 days. Bhubaneswar recorded 37.6°C on Sunday and is expected to experience 38°C with a partly cloudy sky and possible thunderstorm on Monday.
