Pataudi medal was an afterthought, ECB should have done better: Farokh Engineer
BIRMINGHAM: A close friend of the late Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, Farokh Engineer says the ECB erred in handling the renaming of the India-England Test series trophy and its decision to introduce the winning captain's medal after his former teammate's family name was clearly an afterthought to "appease" supporters like him. The ECB had instituted the Pataudi Trophy for the India-England series in 2007 until renaming it to the Anderson-Tendulkar trophy before the start of the ongoing five-match series. The decision was criticised by the likes of Sunil Gavaskar. Engineer too was left disappointed but at the same time, he felt the achievements of Sachin Tendulkar and James Anderson were unquestionable. Tendulkar approached the ECB which led to the home board introducing a winning captain's medal after the Pataudi family. "Well Tiger Pataudi was a great friend of mine. Great colleague of mine. We played a lot of Test cricket. Great heritage, great family. I was most happy when the trophy was named after him back in 2007," the Manchester-based Engineer told PTI. "On one hand I was very disappointed that the Pataudi name was removed, I would love Tiger's name to go on but instead powers that be decided with Anderson and Sachin who are legends of the game." "It (introducing Pataudi medal) was obviously an afterthought, they should have announced it in the beginning that would have more credibility but at least they have done something. Common sense has prevailed and hope the Pataudi name always remains."

IND vs ENG: India Aims To Break Edgbaston Jinx To Avoid Equalling Unwanted Test Record And Level Series
As India gears up for the crucial second Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at Edgbaston, Birmingham, history looms large, not just in the context of the series, but in the form of an unwanted record the visitors would be desperate to avoid. The Edgbaston Challenge India has played eight Test matches at Edgbaston, dating back to their first appearance in 1967 under the leadership of Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi. Over nearly six decades, the ground has remained a graveyard for Indian Test hopes, yielding seven losses and just a single draw. As the 2025 clash approaches, India is under pressure not only to stay alive in the series but also to avoid equaling a rather dismal statistical landmark. If India fail to register a win in this match, Edgbaston will join the likes of Bridgetown (Barbados) and Manchester (Old Trafford) as the venue where India have played the most Tests without a single win, nine games each. India's Most Winless Test Venues: Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados – 9 matches (7 losses, 2 draws) Old Trafford, Manchester – 9 matches (4 losses, 5 draws) Edgbaston, Birmingham – 8 matches (7 losses, 1 draw) Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore – 7 matches (2 losses, 5 draws) Bourda, Georgetown, Guyana – 6 matches (0 losses, 6 draws) What's at Stake India's performance in the opening Test at Headingley left much to be desired. Ravindra Jadeja's underwhelming bowling and a lack of collective bowling firepower allowed England to dominate. With England taking a 1-0 lead in the series, Edgbaston becomes a do-or-die venue for the visitors, not just to stay in contention for the trophy, but also to exorcise the ghosts of the past. A Golden Opportunity As Edgbaston beckons, it's not just the series or pride at stake for India; it's a chance to shake off a legacy of disappointment and finally make history at a venue that has given them nothing but heartbreak.

Kapil Dev breaks silence on Anderson-Tendulkar trophy controversy; ‘feels a little strange, does this also happen?'
Legendary Kapil Dev has finally broken his silence on the Anderson-Tendulkar trophy controversy before the start of India's five-match Test series against England. The controversy stemmed when the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) renamed the Pataudi Trophy - to be awarded to the winner of the Test series hosted by England against India - as the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, thus honouring two legends of the game. India have been touring England since 1932 but the Pataudi Trophy - in honour of former India captain Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi and his father Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi - first came into picture when the Indian team led by Rahul Dravid won their only second Test series win over England in England in 2007. Sachin Tendulkar was also a part of that team. Like many others, Kapil Dev, also drew a strange reaction. 'It feels a little strange… like, does this also happen? But that's okay, everything works in cricket,' said the 1983 World Cup-winning former India captain at a event on Wednesday in New Delhi. "At the end of the day, there is no difference. Cricket is cricket. The cricket on the field should be the same," said the 66-year-old. The idea of Pataudi Trophy was first conceived in 2007 by the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) to pay tribute to the contributions of the Pataudi family and mark the 75th anniversary of India's first Test against England in 1932. While Iftikhar Ali Khan represented both India and England nd is the only cricketer to do so, his son Mansur Ali Khan also made a mark for himself for India. Both had captained India.

Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy launch delayed due to Ahmedabad air tragedy
LONDON: The launch of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy for the upcoming Test series between India and England has been delayed due to the recent airline tragedy in Ahmedabad which led to 275 deaths. Previously called the Pataudi Trophy in honour of former India captain Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, the decision to rename it as Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy (ATT) was taken by the host England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). "Yes, the launch of ATT Trophy (which was to be held originally on June 14) has been delayed due to the recent tragedy in Ahmedabad. It has not been cancelled. Hopefully, there will be a launch in next few days just before the start of the series," a BCCI official told PTI on conditions of anonymity. More than 50 British nationals also lost their lives in the crash. The Air India flight 171 was travelling to London and crashed within minutes of take off. The renaming of the trophy is an ode to two living legends England pacer James Anderson and Indian batting great Sachin Tendulkar. The series starting June 20 in Leeds will feature five Test matches. It has also been learnt that the ECB has received a request from the BCCI to retain the Pataudi connection to the series by having an individual honour named after him. As per sources, Tendulkar and ICC chairman Jay Shah want Pataudi's name to remain associated with the marquee series keeping in mind the late captain's contribution to Indian cricket.
