King Charles to welcome Trump at Windsor Castle as state visit is brought forward: report

King Charles will welcome President Donald Trump at Windsor Castle for his second state visit to the UK in September. The monarch, 76, extended an unprecedented invitation to the commander in chief and First Lady Melania Trump earlier this year following his historic election win, with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer even hand-delivering His Majesty's note to Trump. Starmer has gone against the King's wishes by bringing Trump's lavish visit forward by many months, The Times of London reports. Getty Images Charles, who is also the current monarch of Canada, had previously invited Trump to meet at either Balmoral Castle or Dumfries House in Scotland. After palace officials explored all options ahead of Trump's second state visit, plans were reportedly switched up to ensure the visit was anything but informal. Advertisement Planning for the official state visit has now begun, with a hand-signed formal invitation — also known as the Manu Regia — from the King being hand-delivered to Trump last week at the White House. 'His Majesty has known President Trump for many years and looks forward to hosting him and the First Lady later this year,' a palace aide told the outlet. While exact dates of Trump's state visit remain up in the air, it's said that September is looking most likely. 6 The monarch, 76, extended an unprecedented invitation to the commander in chief earlier this year following his historic election win. In February, Starmer presented Trump with the royal invitation from the King during their meeting in the Oval Office, with the president quickly accepting. 'This is really special. This has never happened before. This is unprecedented, and I think that just symbolizes the strength of the relationship between us,' Starmer said, calling the last state visit a 'tremendous success.' 6 UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer hand-delivered His Majesty's note to Trump in February. 'On behalf of our wonderful first lady Melania and myself, the answer is yes, and we look forward to being there and honoring the King and honoring, really, your country.' 'Your country is a fantastic country, and it'll be our honor to be there,' he added. Still, the ongoing tensions between the US and Canada has caused issues. After Trump threatened to make the Great White North the 51st state, Charles traveled to Canada to deliver a warning shot, saying the country is 'strong and free.' 6 Trump has made his admiration for the royal family known on many occasions, saying in March that he 'loves King Charles.' King Charles makes surprise change to Donald Trump's impending visit to Buckingham Palace

Buckingham Palace has confirmed a surprise move to Donald Trump's expected visit to the UK, bringing forward a planned state visit, reportedly because PM Keir Starmer wants to 'curry favour ' with the US president. Mr Trump will be given all the 'bells and whistles' during the visit now planned for later this year. It is understood that the formal document required to initiate a state visit, known as the Manu Regia, was delivered to the White House last week by a member of the British Embassy. The visit had been planned for next year but UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer pushed for it to be sooner, despite concern from King Charles about Mr Trump's statements regarding Canada, where Charles is head of state. The King had reportedly expressed concerns about Mr Trump's threats to Canada, after he repeatedly claimed the country could become the '51st state' of the United States, and saw it as a reason not to rush a state visit. The King did not want to celebrate Mr Trump with a state visit while he was 'impugning his sovereignty' over Canada, The Times reports . Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney has said he was not impressed with Britain's invitation to Mr Trump at a time when he was threatening to annex the country. During a visit to the White House in February, Sir Keir presented Mr Trump with a letter from the King in which he proposed a meeting in Scotland to discuss details of the state visit. But that informal meeting, while the King was in Scotland over the summer, will no longer happen due to scheduling issues. The timing of the State visit has not yet been confirmed but is likely to be in September. 'His Majesty has known President Trump for many years and looks forward to hosting him and the first lady later this year,' a Buckingham Palace aide said. Mr Trump's last state visit to the UK was during his first term in 2019 with Queen Elizabeth. Traditionally, second-term US presidents are not offered a state visit and have instead been invited for tea or lunch with the monarch at Windsor Castle, BBC reports . 'They're going to do a second, as you know, a second fest… that's what it is: a fest, and it's beautiful, and it's the first time it's ever happened to one person,' Mr Trump said in April. 'And the reason is we have two separate terms, and it's an honour… I'm a friend of Charles, I have great respect for King Charles and the family, William, we have really just a great respect for the family. 'And I think they're setting a date for September.'

King Charles to host Trump in second UK state visit later this year

Britain's King Charles speaks with Charlotte Tilbury, George Clooney, Amal Clooney and Alice, during a reception for the winners of the King's Trust Awards 2025, at Buckingham Palace, London, Britain, June 25, 2025. Stefan Rousseau/ Pool via REUTERS LONDON, United Kingdom - King Charles will host U.S. President Donald Trump for his unprecedented second state visit to Britain later this year, Buckingham Palace confirmed on Wednesday. Trump accepted an invitation from Charles for a second state visit in February, making the U.S. president the first elected political leader in modern times to be hosted for two state visits by a British monarch. "Your country is a fantastic country and it'll be our honour to be there," Trump said after Prime Minister Keir Starmer handed him a handwritten letter from Charles in the Oval Office, describing the king as "a beautiful man". No date was set at the time for the event which Britain hopes will help cement close ties between the two allies at a time of global upheaval, and one that is always marked by lavish displays of pomp and pageantry. "His majesty has known President Trump for many years and looks forward to hosting him and the First Lady later this year," a Palace aide said. Last week, the "Manu Regia", an official signed invitation from the monarch which signals the start of formal planning, was hand-delivered to the White House by British representatives, with confirmation of the exact date for the trip to follow. Initially there were expectations that Trump would first come to Britain for a short trip where he would meet the king for a private meeting, ahead of the formal state visit. But it had proved impossible to find a suitable date in their diaries over the summer so planning for the state visit has begun instead, a Palace source said. British state visits usually include a carriage ride through central London and a lavish state banquet, but it is not clear yet where Trump will be hosted. The late Queen Elizabeth welcomed Trump to Buckingham Palace for a three-day state visit in June 2019 during his first term in office, during which he had a private lunch with the sovereign, as well as having tea with Charles, who was then heir. That visit already put Trump in a select group of U.S. presidents, as only Barack Obama and George W. Bush were afforded official state visits to Britain during Elizabeth's record 70 years on the throne. Trump was also invited to tea at Windsor Castle, the monarch's home to the west of London during a trip to Britain in 2018. Both his visits to Britain also attracted large protests, with his 2018 trip costing police more than 14 million pounds as 10,000 officers were deployed from all over Britain. — Reuters
