DPWH rushing San Juanico Bridge repair to meet December 2025 deadline

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is expediting the repairs of San Juanico Bridge to increase its load limit to 12 - 15 tons by December this year, Secretary Manuel Bonoan said Sunday. 'Ongoing ang repairs sa San Juanico Bridge at pinapaspasan na namin para makaabot kami sa deadline ng Presidente,' Bonoan told Super Radyo dzBB. (Repairs on the San Juanico Bridge are ongoing, and we're expediting the work to meet President Ferdinand Marcos Jr's deadline.) This move came after Marcos said he wanted to restore the bridge's capacity after a three-ton load limit had been imposed since May 15, after an assessment showed that there are significant structural compromises to the bridge. 'That's a test, sabi ko pag hindi niyo natapos 'yan, tatanggapin ko 'yung resignation ninyo,' Marcos warned. (That's a test, if you don't finish that, I'll accept your resignation.) The President had said more than P500 million has already been allocated for the San Juanico Bridge's repair. Last May, the Tacloban City Council declared a state of emergency as access to San Juanico Bridge, which links the islands of Samar and Leyte in Eastern Visayas, remains limited ahead of planned repairs on the structure. — RF, GMA Integrated News

EDSA rehabilitation likely delayed to 2026

The long-awaited rehabilitation of EDSA will likely be postponed to 2026, according to Public Works Secretary Manuel Bonoan. In a report on NewsWatch Plus on July 4, Bonoan said that starting construction during the rainy season would be impractical. The project, dubbed 'EDSA Rebuild,' was initially set to begin in June, alongside traffic mitigation plans such as the proposed odd-even scheme. However, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered a temporary suspension to refine the implementation strategy and fast-track the timeline. Bonoan noted the need to align the project with better weather conditions and international events scheduled for 2026, such as ASEAN meetings in Manila. Originally, the DPWH planned for phased work to be completed by 2027. The agency is currently evaluating new technologies to speed up repairs and will submit revised recommendations to the President.

EDSA rehab, odd-even scheme moved to 2026 — DPWH

The EDSA rehabilitation and implementation of the odd-even scheme will push through in 2026, according to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) on Thursday. According to Joseph Morong's exclusive report on '24 Oras' on Thursday, the DPWH said the EDSA rehabilitation will begin next year as it is already the rainy season in the country, which will be followed by the Christmas rush during the "Ber" months. 'If we have the space early next year, then we can start. Some of the sections na hindi most traveled (that is not most traveled), and that will not affect substantially the traffic movement,' DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan said. He added the DPWH is also looking into a more efficient and affordable technology to rehabilitate the 23.8-kilometer stretch of the historic highway that is considered Metro Manila's major thoroughfare. In the original plan, EDSA would be reconstructed lane-by-lane, with each being replaced by a new road. The whole project would cost from P8 to 17 billion. However, DPWH is studying the 'time and motion' process where a layer would be placed above the surface of EDSA. 'It looks promising. We are not going to scarify it anymore. We'll just put it on top but we have to stabilize it properly. Tataas ng konti yung EDSA. hindi naman gaano mataas (EDSA will be raised a bit),' Bonoan said. He added the roadwork would be done at night, but the odd-even scheme must still be implemented to lessen the volume of vehicles. The DPWH will submit its recommendation to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. once it finalizes the technology that will be used for the EDSA rehabilitation. More buses, trains in EDSA Meanwhile, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) said it will continue its plans to add more buses to the EDSA busway. It is also studying if the operation hours of MRT-3 can start earlier and if the 24 new Dalian trains can be utilized since it was not used since it did not match the MRT system. 'Sa checklist nila ng Sumitomo, there are only two or three out of ten left. For the 8 trains, kung ma-clear yun, then we can start using these trains,' DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon said. Preparatory works for EDSA rehab to start on June 13, 2025

The rehabilitation of EDSA is expected to last until 2027, with its preparatory works set to begin on the night of June 13, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said Monday. Public Works Secretary Manuel Bonoan said that they will rebuild and reconstruct the 200-kilometer southbound and northbound lanes of EDSA, in line with the directive of President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. A week after the preparations for the rehabilitation, Bonoan said that they will start the digging up of the road. The priority will be the section from Pasay to Guadalupe in both directions, considering the country's hosting of the ASEAN Summit next year. 'Ang concept of the EDSA rebuild is we will change the pavement. Babaguhin natin ang pavement ng EDSA into a new pavement. In other words, bubungkalin natin 'yung existing pavement sa EDSA, papalitan natin ng bagong pavement na matibay na pavement,' Bonoan said at a press conference. (The concept of the EDSA rebuild is we will change the pavement. We will change the EDSA pavement into a new pavement. In other words, we will dig up the existing pavement on EDSA, and we will replace it with a new pavement that is more durable.) 'We will adopt the latest technologies on concrete mix. On top of the concrete mix na gagawin natin, maglalagay tayo ng running surface na makapal kapal na asphalt para smooth 'yung traffic natin,' he added. (We will adopt the latest technologies on concrete mix. On top of the concrete mix that we will make, we will put a running surface with thick asphalt so that the traffic will be smooth.) Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon, meanwhile, clarified that even while the EDSA rehabilitation is ongoing, the EDSA busway will be retained for thousands of commuters. (@Joseph_Morong) May 26, 2025 He explained that the government has come up with several interventions to address the anticipated traffic due to the repair works, among which is making the toll in Skyway Stage 3 free of charge. There will also be additional 100 buses that will be deployed along the EDSA busway, and additional car train sets on MRT-3. — RSJ, GMA Integrated News

Gov't to build new bridge near San Juanico

Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Manuel Bonoan on Wednesday announced the government's plan to construct a new bridge adjacent to the existing San Juanico Bridge. During a Palace press briefing, Bonoan said the new bridge would be about 2.6 kilometers long, stretching longer than the existing bridge. He added that this will be financed through official development assistance from the Japanese government.'This will be one of the flagship projects under this administration. It is now under detailed engineering design. We hope that the detailed engineering design will be completed by 2026 and the construction will follow immediately,' Bonoan said. The existing San Juanico Bridge will undergo rehabilitation after a recent assessment raised concerns about its structural integrity. Authorities are already on blue alert following the enforcement of the vehicle weight limit. A blue alert status means agencies are at a heightened preparedness and alertness. Built in 1969 and completed in 1973, San Juanico Bridge is the third longest bridge spanning a body of seawater in the Philippines, connecting the islands of Samar and Leyte. Bonoan had said the present load limits of San Juanico Bridge amid its rehabilitation might be increased in the coming months.—LDF, GMA Integrated News
