How Celtic-bound Shin Yamada fared for Japan vs China
Mao Hosoya opened the scoring on 11 minutes for the Samurai Blue, before Henry Heroki Mochizuki doubled their money just after the hour mark. All five of Japan's available substitutes were made, although Yamada remained on the bench throughout the 90 minutes. It comes after he came on as a half-time substitute in his nation's tournament opener against Hong Kong last Tuesday, which they emphatically won 6-1. After that, it is reportedly expected that Yamada will travel to Glasgow to finalise his move to Celtic, with a £1.5 million fee said to have been agreed between the Scottish champions and his club, Kawasaki Frontale. The 25-year-old has scored just two goals in 21 J-League appearances this season, although last term, he was prolific, netting 19 across the campaign. The most Daizen Maeda ever managed in the division was 23. Weighing in on potential Celtic incomings yesterday, Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers said [The Scottish Sun]: "There's work going on behind the scenes. "It's clear we need to improve the squad. "There's a lot of work going on behind the scenes, there's loads of names floating about. "We're clear that we need to improve our frontline. "We lost Kyogo [Furuhashi] in January and another player with Nicolas [Kuhn] gone. "That's a lot of goals that's gone out of the team. "So for us, we need to strengthen that area of the field. But the guys back home are working hard on that."

Football: Japan down China, to face South Korea for East Asian title
YONGIN, South Korea (Kyodo) -- Japan set up a winner-take-all clash with South Korea at the East Asian Football Federation E-1 men's championship by defeating China 2-0 on Saturday. Defending champions Japan moved to a 2-0 win-loss record to join hosts South Korea at the top of the four-team table, and the two teams will meet Tuesday for the title. Mao Hosoya got world No. 17 Japan on the scoresheet against 94th-ranked China with a powerful strike from just outside the box in the 11th minute at Yongin Mireu Stadium in a Seoul suburb. Six minutes later, China had a great chance to equalize, but Japan goalkeeper Tomoki Hayakawa denied Zhang Yuning in a one-on-one situation. Henry Heroki Mochizuki doubled the Samurai Blue's lead in the 64th minute with his first goal for Japan. "I think my goal came out of my aggressiveness," the 23-year-old Machida Zelvia player said. "I tried to join the attack as much as possible. I know I still have a lot to work on in both attack and defense, but I'll try to get better and cement my place on the team." Japan's E-1 championship squad has been selected entirely from the domestic J-League by manager Hajime Moriyasu. Veteran defender Yuto Nagatomo, 38, made his first Japan appearance since the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Both China and Hong Kong have lost two matches in a row.

East Asian Championship: China lose to Japan, face Hong Kong wooden spoon fight
Japan set up a final-day East Asian Football Championship title shoot-out with South Korea, after they beat China 2-0 in Seoul on Saturday. Advertisement In a mirror image of the past two editions, in 2019 and 2022, Hong Kong will fight the Chinese to avoid the ignominy of claiming the tournament's wooden spoon. And while hopes have been high of a first Hong Kong victory in 40 years, China were more organised, aggressive and ambitious against Japan than in their 3-0 loss to the Koreans five days earlier. Six minutes after they fell behind to Mao Hosoya's early strike, China had a golden chance to level. A slightly fortunate ricochet off his own boot sent Zhang Yuning clean through, but the striker's low shot was too close to Tomoki Hayakawa in goal. Wei Shihao tamely side-footed the rebound wide. Japan had made no such mistake when their chance fell, and after Gao Tianyi lost possession in midfield, early in the 11th minute, the next China player to touch the ball was goalkeeper Yan Junling, when he picked it out of his net roughly 40 seconds later. 01:30 Cristiano Ronaldo museum opens in Hong Kong Cristiano Ronaldo museum opens in Hong Kong Satoshi Tanaka rattled the final pass into Hosoya, who had his back to goal on the edge of the area. The centre-forward turned and escaped debutant China defender Liu Haofan in one movement, before unleashing a full-blooded shot across Yan and into the left corner.
