Project at home near Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach to restore part of 1935 designs
A landmarked home near President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago Club is set to receive an update that will in part restore a portion of the two-story property to its original blueprints. The home at 1047 S. Ocean Blvd. was completed in 1935 and designed in the Art Moderne style by noted architect John Volk. It is in Palm Beach, Florida's Estate Section, just north of Trump's club and inside the U.S. Secret Service security zone between Southern Boulevard and South County Road that goes into effect when the president is home. The Town Council at its June 11 Development Review Committee meeting voted unanimously to grant the necessary approvals that will allow the project to move forward. Charles "Rusty" and Ashley Holzer purchased the nearly 8,000-square-foot, five-bedroom home in 2019 for $12 million through their 1047 South Ocean Boulevard Trust, according to Palm Beach County records. The home was landmarked by Palm Beach in 2013. The lot is about a half-acre and has 100 feet of beachfront. In case you missed it: Trump's Mar-a-Lago security zone is racking up home sales. How much was the latest deal? Rusty Holzer is the son of longtime Palm Beach resident and businesswoman Jane Holzer, who was known as "Baby Jane," one of Andy Warhol's muses. She is building a new home on her property just to the north at 980 S. Ocean Blvd., on the northeast corner with Via Del Lago. With the June 11 vote, Charles and Ashley Holzer now can move forward with removing two small balconies from the back of the house to rebuild the original Volk-designed second-floor curvilinear balcony, said attorney Maura Ziska, the agent for the Holzers. The two smaller balconies were built sometime since 2007, according to the memo from town staff to the council. Photos of the house soon after it was built show the original curved design of the balcony, which had a metal railing. Plans also include adding two second-floor additions onto single-story portions of the north and south side of the house facing the Atlantic Ocean. A staircase on the outside of the south wall of the house will be reversed so the entrance is from the east instead of the west, plans show. The additions, staircase and balcony replacement were designed by Dailey Janssen Architects of West Palm Beach. The work at 1047 S. Ocean Blvd. was first approved as two separate projects in 2020 and 2021, but those approvals expired, requiring the Holzers to return to the council, town staff told the council in a memo. The council approved three variances to reduce the north side-yard setback, reduce the south side-yard setback and increase the lot coverage. The home already exceeds those setbacks and the lot coverage, because it was built before the current code went into effect, said James Murphy, assistant director of the town's Planning, Zoning and Building Department. Once completed, the changes will not be visible from South Ocean Boulevard, he said. Council members lauded the Holzers' decision to replace the pair of smaller balconies with Volk's original design. "The back of the home really lost its architectural integrity, and the bulk of this request is really bringing back an element that you can see in this historical photography that it originally had, so I'm in," Council Member Ted Cooney said, referring to a photo shown to the council by Ziska. Volk designed the house for James Moffett Jr. and his wife Adeline. Moffett was a vice president of Standard Oil of New Jersey and then the first Federal Housing Administrator, serving from 1934 to 1935. According to the 2013 landmark designation report, Volk was inspired by the National Housing Act and the "Modeltown and Modernization Magic" exhibition at the 1935 Exposition in San Diego. The Moffetts named the house White Caps.

What to know about Fourth of July anti-Trump protests
Anti- Trump organizers are hosting "Free America" rallies on Independence Day in the next round of mass protest across the country. The big picture: This renewed batch of protests against the administration comes amid growing discontent with Trump's policies. "Your freedom. Your people. Your rebellion," the Women's March website said. The other side: "President Trump won nearly 80 million votes and received a historic mandate to Make America Great Again, and he's delivering in a big way," White House spokesperson Liz Huston said in a statement to Axios. State of play: The Women's March encouraged protesters to plan rallies, marches, banner drops, street parades, art builds, BBQs, dance protests and block parties. About 200 events were scheduled as of Tuesday afternoon, signaling less interest than the recent "No Kings" protests. What they're saying: "They want us scared, divided, and alone," the Women's March said. "They don't want us to dream about freedom. But that's exactly what we have to do." "This Fourth of July, we will be in the streets with songs of freedom and joy. The dream of American freedom belongs to all of us, and we will not stop in our pursuit of its promise, now or ever." The protests are focused on freeing the U.S. from billionaires' power, poverty, unlawful orders, and the politics of fear, the website said. Zoom in: Local groups are organizing a Thursday protest outside of Trump's Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, Florida, featuring a "Trump baby" balloon, the Palm Beach Post reported. Flashback: Crowds of thousands to millions have protested the Trump administration during single-day protest events for months. What's next: On July 17, " Good Trouble Lives On" demonstrations are planned with a focus on civil rights, in honor of the late Rep. John Lewis.

Trump and Epstein: the history of their messy friendship
Resting his hand on Jeffrey Epstein's shoulder, Donald Trump smiled as he posed for a photograph with his old friend in Palm Beach in 1997. At the time, the pair, who moved in the same wealthy social circles and bonded over their love of beautiful women, had been friends for years. Eleven years later, Epstein was a convicted paedophile. Eleven years after that, he killed himself while in prison awaiting trial on sex trafficking and conspiracy charges. Ever since Epstein's crimes first came to light, the internet has been filled with conspiracy theories about Mr Trump's relationship with the sex offender. Now Elon Musk's bombshell accusation that Mr Trump is named in the Epstein files has put the president's old relationship with the paedophile under renewed scrutiny. Mr Trump is yet to comment on the allegation. Mr Trump and Epstein's friendship stretched back decades. The two wealthy businessmen would fly from New York to Palm Beach together. They would party at Mar-a-Lago Club and dine together at Epstein's Manhattan mansion. 'I've known Jeff for 15 years. Terrific guy', Mr Trump told New York magazine in 2002. 'He's a lot of fun to be with,' Mr Trump said. 'It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side,' he added. In a clip from the NBC archives of the two men at Mr Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate in 1992 they can be seen pointing out women on the dance floor. Credit: NBC That year, Mr Trump is said to have hosted a 'calendar girl' competition, which George Houraney, a Florida-based businessman, had organised at Mr Trump's request. Mr Houraney said he arranged for 28 girls to fly in, but later discovered the only other attendees would be Mr Trump and Epstein. 'I said, 'Donald, this is supposed to be a party with VIPs. You're telling me it's you and Epstein?'', he told the New York Times. Epstein also attended an event at Mar-a-Lago in 2000 with Ghislaine Maxwell, who is serving a 20-year prison sentence for grooming teenage girls to be abused by Epstein. Mr Trump and Epstein's relationship took a turn, however. They are said to have become rivals in 2004, each going up against each other to buy up Palm Beach properties, but the reason for their falling out is not fully understood. After Epstein's arrest, Mr Trump distanced himself from the sex offender. 'I was not a fan,' he told reporters in July 2019. 'I had a falling out with him a long time ago.' On Maxwell's arrest in 2020, his words were warmer. 'I haven't really been following it too much. I just wish her well, frankly,' he said at the time. 'I've met her numerous times over the years, especially since I lived in Palm Beach, and I guess they lived in Palm Beach. But I wish her well, whatever it is,' he added. In 2022 Maxwell was sentenced to 20 years in prison after she was found guilty of sex trafficking. She was accused of conspiring with Epstein to set up a scheme to lure young girls into sexual relationships with Epstein from 1994 to 2004 in New York, Florida, New Mexico and the US Virgin Islands. But despite distancing himself from the sex offender, Mr Trump's name came up at Maxwell's 2021 trial, when a woman testifying under the pseudonym Jane said Epstein took her to meet Mr Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort when she was 14. She did not allege any improper behaviour from Mr Trump. Mr Trump insisted he had never been on Epstein's plane or private island, but flight logs released during the trial suggested the US president flew on the plane seven times. According to the logs, on at least one of the trips between New York and Florida, Mr Trump was accompanied by his former wife Marla Maples and their daughter Tiffany. Another log listed his son Eric as a passenger. Other notable passengers on Epstein's plane included former President Bill Clinton, Robert F Kennedy Jr, Prince Andrew and actor Kevin Spacey. Virginia Roberts Giuffre, an Epstein victim who killed herself last month, claimed she was working at Mar-a-Lago as a locker room attendant when she was 'recruited' by Maxwell. There were no new revelations about Mr Trump's relationship with Epstein in the files released by the Biden administration. But last year Stacey Williams, a former Sports Illustrated model who dated Epstein, told The Guardian the financier had taken her to Mr Trump's Fifth Avenue penthouse in 1993 and encouraged Mr Trump to grope her in a 'twisted game'. Mr Trump denied the allegations. Weeks later Michael Wolff released tapes of Epstein describing himself as 'Donald's closest friend for 10 years'. Mr Wolff, who has written several books about Mr Trump, said the recordings were from 2017 when he was having a discussion about writing Epstein's biography. Karoline Leavitt, who was the Trump campaign national press secretary, accused Mr Wolff of 'outlandish false smears' and engaging in 'blatant election interference on behalf of Kamala Harris'. Mr Musk's bombshell claim was part of a spectacular war of words between the world's most powerful men, with the president claiming the Tesla boss has 'Trump derangement syndrome', and Mr Musk insisting Mr Trump only won the election because of him. Earlier in the day Mr Trump told reporters during a sit-down with Friedrich Merz, Germany's new chancellor: 'Elon and I had a great relationship. I don't know if we will anymore.' In February, Pam Bondi, the US attorney general, pledged to release all of the information the government holds on Epstein, which have come to be known as the Epstein files. She invited a select group of pro-Maga influencers to the White House where they were handed binders containing what she said was 'Phase One' of the full document release. However, the 200-page document contained only phone-book contacts and flight logs, most of which have been available since 2015. No date has been set for releasing the remaining files. House in Trump security zone is listed for $12.5 million
Another Palm Beach house is up for grabs in the security zone that borders President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago Club. The four-bedroom house at 112 Algoma Road is priced at $12.5 million and is a potential tear-down, according to the May 20 sales listing. The street is the third one north of Mar-a-Lago in the neighborhood that closes to through-traffic when the president is in residence at his private club. Built in 1952, the one-story house on Algoma Road is being marketed in the local multiple listing service in two categories – single-family homes and land. With 2,930 total square feet, the Bermuda-style house stands on a non-waterfront lot of about a third of an acre. It's the second house west of South Ocean Boulevard, which divides a row of direct-beachfront homes from the rest of the Estate Section. The house has been in the same family for nearly 45 years. Property records show its owned through a trust by Joyce S. Vaughn, who has it homesteaded as her primary residence in the latest Palm Beach County tax rolls. She bought the house for a recorded $385,000 in 1981 with her late husband, management-consulting executive Clother Hathaway Vaughn III. He died in 2019 at 85. Agent Margit Brandt of Premier Estate Properties holds the listing, which describes the property as having a 'bespoke' location with a 'truly elite level of privacy' and nearby deeded beach access. The listing says the house has a swimming pool but provides no details about the home's interior. 'Looking at the market today, 112 Algoma is the only dry lot available for sale in Palm Beach's Estate Section,' Brandt told the Palm Beach Daily News. 'It is also the only piece of land publicly available (in the MLS's land category) in the presidential security zone adjacent to Mar-a-Lago. This presents a special opportunity for a buyer to build their dream home in one of the most coveted, exclusive locations in the world.' Since early December, six residential properties in the Mar-a-Lago security zone have sold at prices ranging from $12 million to $27.5 million. Among those sales was another on Algoma Road. In December, that never-lived-in, five-bedroom house developed on speculation at 130 Algoma Road changed hands for a recorded $14.3 million. Two other houses are 'active' listings in the MLS's single-family category in the same neighborhood. An estate at 160 Clarendon Ave. is offered at $48.85 million by broker Lawrence Moens of Lawrence A. Moens Associates, while a house at 1048 S. Ocean Blvd. is listed at $23.95 million by agent Elizabeth DeWoody of Compass Florida. One other neighborhood house is listed in the 'pending' category of the MLS, meaning it is under contract. That's a four-bedroom house at 142 Via Palma with 7,633 total square feet, listed by Brandt at $18.95 million. When Trump is at Mar-a-Lago, security officers shut down South Ocean Boulevard in the neighborhood, opening the road only to property owners or their authorized visitors, representatives or workers. The security zone runs north from the club property for seven blocks, or about half a mile, to South County Road. Because the area is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Intracoastal Waterway on the other, the roadblock effectively divides the town in two, forcing through-traffic to detour across bridges into West Palm Beach and back.
