Pune: After serving 25 years in the first battalion of the Maratha Light Infantry of the Indian Army, retired soldier Ramesh Kharmale (49) has embarked on a new mission to protect and revive nature. He, during his military career, participated in various operations, but that is not it. He has started digging trenches on the hills of the Sahyadri Ranges in Junnar taluka to plant trees and restore natural water resources. "Both duties that I performed are aimed at saving the motherland," Kharmale told TOI. "I applied my 'Paltan' work ethos to this endeavour and turned it into my new mission," he added. At present, Kharmale serves as a forest guard with the Junnar forest division and is actively involved in various roles beyond his official duty, said the forest officials. Pradip Chavan, the range forest officer of the Junnar range, under whom Kharmale worked for two years, described him as a 'highly motivated and determined' personnel. "He works tirelessly and sincerely. Because of these two qualities, he achieved unprecedented results in the field, wherein very few people work on the ground," added Chavan. Kharmale, with the help of villagers, developed the first 'Oxygen Park' in the Vadaj village. There are over 200 trees in the park. He said, "I aim to create such parks in several villages to create a condusive ecological balance to improve overall life." The infantryman wears several feathers in his hat as he actively participates in wildlife rescue operations, grass cutting, and head awareness campaigns in villages in Pune, Ahmednagar, Nashik, Satara, and Kolhapur districts.

The Madras Regimental Centre held 'Shaurya Samparavah', an outreach programme for armed forces veterans in Belagavi on Saturday. It was organised under the aegis of head quarters Dakshin Bharat Area at Kargil Hall in Maratha Light Infantry regimental centre. Brigadier Krishnendu Das, officer in charge, Records and Commandant The Madras Regimental Centre presided over the event and addressed the veteran fraternity of Belagavi and the nearby districts of Dharwad, Hubballi, Gadag, and Vijayapura attended. The commandant thanked the veterans, veer naris and their dependents for the contribution made by them in their service with the armed forces and for the nation. He further assured them of the organisation responsibility to ensure well-being of the veteran community and speedy redressal of their grievances. Kolhapur: The 351st coronation ceremony of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was celebrated on a grand scale on Friday. Former MP Sambhajiraje Chhatrapati performed the traditional rituals on the idol of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at Raigad Fort, where the actual coronation had taken place on June 6,1674. The coronation ceremony of the king is being celebrated at the fort over the last few decades owing to the initiative of former MP and Akhil Bhartiya Shivrajyabhishek Mahotsav Samiti. On Friday, Sambhajiraje Chhatrapati and his son Yashraje Chhatrapati performed the abhishek of the idol of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at Raigad Fort. Powadas recited by shaheers brought enthusiasm among the people. Around 150 police officers, 1,600 police personnel, along with the traffic police team, state reserve police, Raigad police, riot control team, local rescue team, and volunteers, ensured that the celebrations were conducted peacefully. At the New Palace in Kolhapur, the residence of royal family of Kolhapur, a 'suvarna mudra abhishek' was performed by the royal family members in presence of MP Shahu Chhatrapati. On this occasion, royal family members Maharani Yadnyaseni Chhatrapati, Malojiraje Chhatrapati, Madhurimaraje Chhatrapati, Yashasviniraje Chhatrapati, and Yashrajraje Chhatrapati were present, along with a large number of citizens who arrived at the New Palace to witness the event. A musical band performance by Maratha Light Infantry was also held. Meanwhile, a colourful procession rally on behalf of the Akhil Bhartiya Maratha Mahasangh was taken out on Friday evening, in which hundreds of kids dressed as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Maharani Jijau participated. Belagavi: The fifth batch of Agniveer under the Agnipath scheme witnessed the culmination of training on Thursday. On this occasion, a ceremonial attestation parade with full military traditions was held at the Maratha Light Infantry Regimental Centre (MLIRC), Belagavi. The attestation parade of the Agniveers was reviewed by Brigadier Joydip Mukherjee, commandant of the MLIRC, who applauded the Agniveers for their immaculate turnout and very high standards of drill. The parade was commanded by Agniveer Gajanan Rathod, while Lt Col Digvijay Singh was the parade adjutant. The Agniveers took the Oath of Affirmation in the presence of the national flag, the regimental flag, and religious holy books in an impressive ceremony witnessed by their parents, serving and retired fraternity of the regiment, dignitaries of Belagavi, cadets of NCC, and the young students of various schools. The pride with which the Agniveers took the oath made the ceremony even more impressive. Addressing the newly attested Agniveers, the reviewing officer reminded them of the rich heritage and the glory of the Maratha Light Infantry, as one of the oldest infantry regiments of the . He also stressed the importance of discipline and physical fitness in a soldier's life. He exuded confidence in the training conducted at the regimental centre and assured that it would stand the young soldiers in good stead before wishing them the very best in their future assignments. The reviewing officer also awarded medals to the meritorious Agniveers for excelling in different spheres of training. Naik Yashwant Ghadge, Victoria Cross Medal for overall best Agniveer, was awarded to Agniveer Kaple Krishnat. The attestation parade concluded with a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the Sharqat War Memorial, to pay respect to the brave hearts of the regiment by the reviewing officer and the Agniveers. The proud parents were also felicitated with the Gaurav Padak to honour them for motivating their wards to serve the nation.
