Barcelona veteran could be sent on loan in January

A headline member of the first-team ranks at La Liga giants Barcelona could be forced to find himself a new temporary home for the 2nd half of the upcoming campaign. That's according to Diario Sport, who point towards Marc-André ter Stegen as the player in question. Goalkeeper Ter Stegen has of course seen his name return to the centre of the headlines in Catalunya's capital over the last 48 hours. This comes after confirmation was forthcoming that the German's absence from group training with Hansi Flick's squad this week comes owing to a back injury. Ter Stegen has been advised to go under the knife to solve the problem, a move which would see him ruled out for around four months. And in the case of heading down such a route, the most likely scenario would see the 33-year-old farmed out on loan in January. Already down the pecking order at the Camp Nou owing to the recent arrivals of both Joan García and Wojciech Szczęsny, Ter Stegen would be highly unlikely to secure any sort of meaningful game-time in Barcelona over the 2nd half of the term. In turn, as per a report from Sport: 'It is very likely that Ter Stegen will agree to go on loan for six months from January to show himself and have the possibility of going to the World Cup with the German national team.' Barcelona captain Marc-Andre ter Stegen to take surgery decision next week

Barcelona are keen on the idea of captain Marc-Andre ter Stegen having surgery to resolve an ongoing back issue. The German goalkeeper is weighing up the decision, which could resolve some short-term issues for Blaugrana. Ter Stegen has spent the last week training in the gym, as back pain continues to obstruct him. Two options are on the table: following a more conservative treatment based on rest and physiotherapy, or to have surgery. The surgery would rule him out for four months, and Sport say that he will take the decision next week. Barcelona keen on surgery for ter Stegen El Chiringuito say that Barcelona are keen for ter Stegen to undergo the surgery, while Sport explain that between the club doctors, some external consults and the German national team doctors, he has been advised by all to have surgery. In theory he would recover easily from the procedure, which is unlikely to have complications. Image viaFor Barcelona, it would allow them to register his replacement Joan Garcia due to the injury-rule, using 80% of his salary, and pushing a problem down the line until January. From his perspective, ter Stegen would have the chance to resolve the matter, and then have six months to potentially head out on loan and get back to full sharpness, before the 2026 World Cup. On the other hand, it would more or less relinquish the number one spot, and his chances of getting it back would be slim. FIFA could also cover costs for Barcelona As per MD, ter Stegen first began struggling with the back issue on international duty with Germany during the Nations League games. For long-term injuries suffered while playing for an international side, FIFA pay out €20,548 per day in compensation, and FIFA were already informed of the injury. If ter Stegen were to be ruled out and have the surgery, it could be worth as much as €2.5m to the Catalan side.

Man City join the race for Barcelona star

Pep Guardiola's Manchester City are expressing a keen interest in the potential signing of an out-of-favour member of the goalkeeper ranks at La Liga champions Barcelona. That's according to , who of course point to Marc-André ter Stegen as the player in question. Shot-stopper Ter Stegen is for his part widely expected to be on the move before the summer is out. Whilst the German is continuing to stand firm, adamant that he will be going nowhere over the weeks ahead, his relegation to 3rd-choice in Hansi Flick's squad is ultimately expected to prove too much to look past. A whole host of clubs from across Europe, in turn, have been tipped as potential landing spots for Ter Stegen with a view to next season. And as alluded to above, this week, a new suitor is understood to have entered the fray. As per a report from AS: 'This whole situation has put Manchester City on alert, considering the idea of finding a reliable replacement for Ederson.' Turkish heavyweights Galatasaray, meanwhile, are also continuing to keep a close eye on the situation. Conor Laird – GSFN

Barcelona star considering surgery that could have major transfer impact

Barcelona star Marc-Andre ter Stegen is considering a second surgery in the space of a year, amid intense speculation over his future. The Blaugrana captain has been told that he will be third-choice this season behind Joan Garcia and Wojciech Szczesny if he remains at the club, but so far has vowed to fight for his spot. The 33-year-old spent much of last season out injured after undergoing knee surgery, with Wojciech Szczesny signed out of retirement to replace him. As he returned from injury in May, ter Stegen played a handful of games, but missed out on playing in crucial clashes against Real Madrid and Inter. Ter Stegen considering surgery As per Jijantes, ter Stegen is considering going under the knife for a second time in the space of a year, and the fourth time in the last four years. He has an ongoing back problem that has kept him out of training for the past five days, and limited to work in the gym. Image via Getty Images Registration and recovery for ter Stegen If he does undergo surgery, ter Stegen would be ruled out for several months of action. Barcelona could use the long-term injury rule to register other players in his absence, including Joan Garcia. Jijantes note that it could be enough money to include Garcia in their squad, and complete another operation. Consequences for ter Stegen and Barcelona It would potentially save Barcelona a headache in terms of registration in the short-term, but it could more or less rule out a departure this summer, and any hope of saving money on his salary. Similarly, for ter Stegen it would further hurt his chances of remaining Germany's number one for the World Cup next summer. This past season Barcelona used the rule to register Dani Olmo and Pau Victor, but were then faced with a registration issue in January, which they only resolved through a court order.
