Not Just Another Spy Thriller, Karan Tacker Calls Special Ops His Turning Point

Karan Tacker opens up about his enduring bond with Neeraj Pandey, calling their creative partnership one of the most defining aspects of his acting journey. The trailer of the much-awaited series Special Ops 2 has finally dropped, and fans are brimming with excitement to see Karan Tacker back on screen. It marks the third instalment in Neeraj Pandey's gripping action-espionage thriller franchise, where Karan reprises his fan-favourite role of Farooq Ali — a RAW agent who operates in high-risk, high-pressure zones. Farooq Ali remains one of the most cherished characters of Karan's career, and he has portrayed the role with remarkable dedication and depth. Karan has been consistently collaborating with Neeraj in recent years, and speaking about their bond, he shared, 'Getting a script from Neeraj Sir is one of the biggest things for me. Outside of television, this was exactly the kind of opportunity I had been seeking as an actor — and I couldn't have asked for a more fitting collaboration than with Neeraj Sir." He also recalled a conversation with Neeraj Pandey from the time Special Ops 1 had just been released. He shared, 'He asked me how I felt about the response. I told him it was amazing. Then he said what if people didn't respond like this? Would it still feel amazing? I said yes because I had a great time shooting it. And that's when he told me the only real takeaway from any project should be the experience you had while making it. That one lesson has stayed with me ever since." Coming to Special Ops 2, the makers have officially announced that the new season will premiere on JioCinema starting July 11. The trailer's official synopsis reads: 'One is a relentless hero, the other is a terror mastermind. In a race against time, Himmat Singh and his team are on a mission to end a 19-year-long manhunt." The series returns with its ensemble cast, including Kay Kay Menon as Himmat Singh, Karan Tacker as Farooq Ali, Vinay Pathak as Abbas Sheikh, and Vipul Gupta as Balakrishna 'Bala" Reddy, among others. What's Next for Karan Tacker? Apart from Special Ops 2, Karan has a packed lineup ahead. He will next be seen in Tanvi: The Great, directed by Anupam Kher. The film recently premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival's Marché du Film and is slated to be screened today, June 19, at the New York Indian Film Festival. The theatrical release is scheduled for July 18. First Published: June 19, 2025, 19:02 IST

Exclusive: Assam Top Cop Had No Money To Make A Feature Film. His Short Made It To Cannes 2025

Guwahati Police Commissioner Dr Partha Sarathi Mahanta is a man who wears many hats. From the rough and tumble of policing one of the most important cities in Northeast India, Guwahati, to directing films, he is handling both roles with aplomb. Ansuni Chinkhe (Unheard Whispers), a socially charged Assamese short film directed by Dr Mahanta, IPS, Commissioner of Police, Guwahati, made a significant mark on the global stage following its recent online screening at the prestigious Marché du Film (Cannes Market), the business counterpart of the Cannes Film Festival. Though Dr Mahanta has no formal training in filmmaking, he says he has gained valuable experience by being closely involved in the making of several films - from concept development to final production. When asked about his passion for films, Dr Mahanta told NDTV, "Like anyone else, I've always loved films since my childhood. Later, I had the opportunity to act in a number of Assamese feature films as well as Assamese TV series. In fact, when the concept of a mega series was first introduced in Assam, I was part of some of the very first ones that were made. I featured in quite a few of them." "That's when I began to realise how powerful a medium film truly is - how effectively it can connect with people. Just like stage plays and dramas, films have the ability to project reality. Even though it's acting, it reflects real life. When someone cries, laughs, or shows tension on screen - those emotions resonate deeply. All human emotions can be portrayed, and the audience naturally connects," Dr Mahanta added. Mahanta says he does not have the resources to make a full-fledged feature film or the time so he began working on projects that could be created with smaller budgets, thus beginning his journey of making documentaries and short films. "It feels even more fulfilling than just being in front of the camera - because now, I'm creating [something]. Whatever is in my mind, in my thoughts, I get to translate into reality through a medium that connects with people more than anything else. That's why I'm passionate about filmmaking," Dr Mahanta tells NDTV. The passion has resulted in appreciation and recognition with the prestigious screening at Marché du Film. "It feels truly great - fulfilling and deeply satisfying - when your work is recognised, especially by something as prestigious as Marché du Film Flames. The film has already been awarded at a couple of other festivals too, like the Jaipur Film Festival and the Delhi Short Film Festival. And, of course, being recognised by Marché du Film feels particularly special," he adds. According to Dr Mahanta, Ansuni Chinkhe -- which won the Best Short Film award at the New Delhi Film Festival 2025 -- is an experiment. "It's based on a poem I wrote originally in Assamese, which was later translated into Hindi. The entire film features just one actor. It's essentially a soliloquy, a single performer reciting the poem with expression, a touch of acting, but not too loud or theatrical. Just the right amount - subtle, restrained, and emotive," he says. The short film has been narrated by the National Film Award-winning actor Seema Biswas. It portrays a challenging yet powerful story of a young girl in India, shedding light on the obstacles she faces from birth through adulthood. However, the filmmaker says Ansuni Chinkhe is not merely a narrative of suffering. It not only depicts adversity but also aims to inspire change, serving as a cinematic expression of resistance and empowerment, he adds. When asked how he finds the time to engage himself in creative pursuits, Dr Mahanta says, "Time management as a police officer is never easy - our profession doesn't run on fixed hours. Emergencies don't arrive with prior notice, and duties often extend beyond scheduled shifts. But I've learned that prioritisation is the key." "And above all, I've realised that time management isn't just about squeezing tasks into a calendar - it's also about energy management. I try to protect my mental bandwidth for things that matter, including creative pursuits like writing or filmmaking. Even if I get just 15 minutes in a day for something personal, I make sure I use it with full attention. That's how I try to stay balanced," Dr. Mahanta says, giving an insight into staying balanced while performing in a high-pressure job. Ansuni Chinkhe is not the only film that Dr Mahanta has been associated with. He has several acclaimed films to his credit. Among them are Lachit The Warrior, an animated film based on the life of Assamese General Lachit Barphukan. It has screened at over 40 film festivals and won 25 best short film awards. Lachit The Warrior was showcased in the Indian Panorama section at the 2023 edition of the International Film Festival of India, Goa. He has also directed Hargila - The Great Adjutant Stork, a documentary that has been screened and awarded at nine international film festivals and gained a special mention at the 70th National Film Awards in 2022. Fehujali, a short film directed by Dr Mahanta, has screened at eight international film festivals and won two best documentary awards. Dr Mahanta lists Sholay, Baahubali, The Godfather, and The Matrix amongst his favourite films for different reasons. "There are many other films I admire for various other reasons - be it storytelling, technical brilliance, emotional depth, or pure cinematic innovation. Each film leaves behind something - an image, a thought, a feeling - and that's what makes cinema so powerful and personal," he adds.

Cannes Film Festival & Market Reaffirms One Persisting Trend

Amy Baker, CEO and co-founder of Winston Baker, speaks to the audience during the 15th International ... More Film Finance Forum in Cannes. Cannes Film Festival represents the epitome of the film festival experience. It boasts old Hollywood glamour (and an even stricter dress code) from one of the most alluring red carpets in the world to larger-than-life premieres like Mission Impossible – The Final Reckoning, one of the hottest tickets in this year's lineup, But beyond the silver screen and behind the giant red carpet and gowns, there is a well-attended and robust market centered around the Palais just on the edge of the La Croisette. For nearly two decades, this central meeting hub has provided a space for industry professionals and festival goers alike to educate, discuss and pontificate over networking events, panels and more. Amy Baker, CEO and co-founder of Winston Baker, has led the development of this programming with the company's annual International Film Finance Forum in Cannes in partnership with Marché du Film. Winston Baker is a globally recognized entertainment content curator, specializing in strategic solutions across entertainment finance, music, innovation, sports and various pockets of the industry. And as the 15th annual finance forum, this year's program did not disappoint. Set on the Festival Main Stage, Baker's company led candid conversations with thought leaders, established executives and talent to demystify and predict trends in the ever-changing film marketplace. I had a chance to connect with Baker following the whirlwind market to get her sense of how this year compares in Cannes past. She noted a surprising amount of support for their artificial intelligence (AI) panel which focused on China. 'In years past, that was not as well attended but this year the crowd showed up with real interest.' AI topics still appear to be a charged issue within the industry—especially after the strikes of 2023— as attendees often questioned the panel itself and yet inquired about AI uses. Baker says that while there is a 'strong interest in figuring out the use of AI,' it is still met with skepticism and concern (with enough hope to reinforce that AI in film is not going anywhere). An image of panelists at the 15th Annual International Film Finance Forum in Cannes. After 15 years of hosting this event series, Baker notes that the main change is that the industry 'newbies' now bring fresh materials and greater sophistication than in previous years, thanks to increased access to technology. She is impressed with early creators' sizzle reels and sample artwork that look 'just as good as a studio.' With newcomer trailers matching the level of those screening in the professional sales booth, how does the industry discern and pinpoint where the talent lies? Baker was also excited about the Cannes audience's continued support for disruptors and advancement in her disruptors and advancement in her Shifter(s) Series with The Shift. For instance, Lars Knudsen and Ari Aster, Square Peg co-founders and filmmakers known for horror hits like Hereditary and Midsommar, received wide coverage from the press for their latest film screening at the fest Eddington. While the film industry is contracting, this is one example of how there are still seasoned professionals who continue to reinvent the business and draw in eyes. But we were both amused to find that disruption can sometimes be overlooked or judged. Baker remembers back to 11 years ago when Ted Sarandos, the CEO of Netflix, took the stage at her event and proclaimed that streaming movies would take over distribution, and the audience's skepticism was blatantly apparent. Baker has excelled in providing a forum where new ideas and observations are welcome, and the progressive Cannes Film Festival is especially supportive of her programming. When asked about the viability of Cannes for both seasoned industry vets and newcomers, Baker still believes that this is one of the preeminent festivals and markets as it is always on her radar. Her advice to newcomers is that the human experience of attending these markets still rises above any AI algorithm and there is nothing like 'being there in person to run into people and just talk as you never know who you will meet.' Those who prepare and do their Cannes homework can make the most out of this still relevant human experience where one can meet the past, present and future of filmmaking in one beautiful beach setting. Next up for Baker is the inaugural International Film & Television Finance Forum during the Venice Film Festival in August and another forum at the Busan International Film Festival in September. With the American Film Market (AFM) back in Los Angeles this fall, she is also receptive to that being another great watering hole—not just for selling films, but for bringing the industry together through her company to collectively navigate the future of entertainment.
