Six OFWs from Iran arrive safely in PH

Six overseas Filipino workers (OFW) repatriated from Iran amid its conflict with Israel arrived safely in the Philippines on Saturday morning, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) said. The OFWs — five who worked as shrimp hatchery technicians in Iran and one domestic worker from Dubai who accompanied her employer to Iran as a tourist — arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 in Pasay City. Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) Administrator Patricia Yvonne Caunan, Department of Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Eduardo de Vega, and DMW Assistant Secretary Venecio Legaspi welcomed the OFWs. The repatriated workers were also met by the MIA Medical Team as well as a social welfare officer of the Department of Social Welfare and Development. The OFWs boarded an Emirates flight to Manila. "The repatriation was made possible through the efforts of the Philippine Embassy in Tehran, led by Ambassador Roberto Manalo, in close coordination with the DMW and OWWA," the DMW said. The repatriated OFWs were given financial assistance by the DMW, OWWA, and DSWD. The MIA Medical Team also provided them with food and medical services. The OWWA will give the OFWs temporary hotel accommodations and domestic flights back to their home provinces. The DMW said two more OFWs from Iran are expected to arrive on Saturday night. "This group marks the first batch of Filipinos repatriated from Iran following the June 13 Israel-Iran conflict," the DMW said. President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. on Monday tasked government offices to take the necessary steps to ensure the safe and orderly return of Filipino workers who wish to avail themselves of voluntary repatriation. In a statement, Marcos said the government is already processing over 200 requests for repatriation and ''we are moving quickly to bring them home while others have opted to remain at work.'' ''I urge our fellow Filipinos to coordinate with our embassies in Tel Aviv and in Tehran. Please follow their guidance, inform them of your situation, and do not hesitate to ask for assistance,'' Marcos said. The Philippine government raised crisis alert level 3 in Israel and Iran on June 20, urging Filipinos in the area to avail of voluntary repatriation. Crisis level 3 or voluntary repatriation phase is imposed by the Philippine government on countries with deteriorating security conditions. At least 30,000 workers, mostly caregivers, are in Israel, and more than 1,000 are in Iran. Tensions heightened between Israel and Iran on June 13 after Israel struck nuclear and military targets Tehran with missiles. According to an Israeli military official, Iran had enough material to make 15 nuclear bombs within days. Iran retaliated, then both countries traded missile attacks. The US also bombed Iran nuclear sites on June 21, and Iran thereafter fired missiles at an American base in Qatar on June 23. A ceasefire between Israel and Iran was announced by US President Donald Trump. —KG, GMA Integrated News

Is this famous British sports car brand making two comebacks?

TVR has been promising it will make a comeback for several years now, but while British sports car fans continue to hold their breath for that, another forgotten name from the history books has been resurrected. Marcos has returned and it's got big things already in the works. In case you're not familiar with Marcos, the company was founded in 1959 – a couple of years after Lotus was born. The founders were Jem Marsh and Frank Costin, who combined their surnames to form the brand's name. Its first creation was the Marcos Xylon: a very unconventional-looking two-seat sports car that earned the nickname 'Ugly Duckling'. It was designed to go racing, rather than win beauty pageants, with Formula One champion Jackie Stewart and five-time Le Mans winner Derek Bell at the wheel. The car's name means 'wood' in Greek, because the chassis was actually made from timber, Marcos going further down the arboreal route than Morgan, which only uses wood for the body frame of its cars. Advertisement - Article continues below After that in 1963, the Marcos GT arrived with an elegant design reminiscent of the Jaguar E-Type and other now-iconic sports cars. While it initially got a Volvo four-cylinder engine, a 3.0-litre Ford V6 would eventually be fitted under the extremely long bonnet. Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below Then in 1966 Marcos went after a wider audience by launching the Mini Macros. As the name suggests, this was meant to be a rival to the original Mini, but it wasn't nearly as cute – or a very pleasant sight at all, really. Baffingly though, the two-metre-long city car was entered in the 24 Hours of Le Mans that year and was the only British car to cross the finish line. Marcos launched several other models after this, mostly sticking to the classic British sports car formula. The company was forced into liquidation and closed its doors in 1972 but was revived about a decade later. It then went bankrupt in 2000. The brand name would be revived by a new company in 2002, which managed to launch two models before also ceasing production in 2007. All of which brings us to the Marcos of today. Marcos and all the original assets of the brand were purchased in 2022 by businessman Howard Nash, and now the Marcus Motor Company has outlined three big projects. It's not hanging about either, as physical prototypes for the all-new cars are already in development. Advertisement - Article continues below '[Marcos] has a wonderful history but also an ethos of simplicity for raw, driver-focused handling,' said Nash, 'It's an analogue experience you can't get from large car manufacturers and supercar brands, and one which I think enthusiasts hanker after today. We want to honour that original ethos while being forward-looking too, giving Marcos a new, younger audience, as well as bringing the brand back for those who grew up with it.' Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below Project #1, as it's being referred to, is a 'faithful reimagining of a much-loved Marcos model with a recognisable silhouette but a contemporary platform and drivetrain'. That's not much to go on, but we feel it's more likely to be a brawny rear-drive sports car than a reborn Mini Macros. Project #2 is a totally-new vehicle with potential for both road and track. Marcos says this particular car 'will owe nothing to legacy Marcos models but will honour the brand ethos of light weight, simplicity and seat-of-the-pants handling'. It sounds like fun, plus a rolling chassis has now been engineered, built and crash tested. Finally, Project #3 is for continuation cars. Because the Marcos Motor Company owns the original body moulds and tooling for almost every model in the Marcos back catalogue, it can deliver 'faithful contemporary versions.' The company will continue providing parts and maintenance to existing owners as well through its Heritage Spares arm. This is actually the second time we've heard about the resurrection of Marcos recently, because it was announced that the name would be returning about a month previously. That news, however, came from an entirely different company, owned by completely different people. Confused? So are we. Advertisement - Article continues below Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below William Storey, CEO of 'Marcos Cars Limited', shared in May that his brand would be launching a 'new F1 inspired supercar' this November. Supposedly, the car will be designed and built in Britain, with him also boasting that 'Ferrari and Lamborghini are in our sights'. The name William Storey will be familiar to fans of Formula One because he's also the CEO and founder of energy drink company Rich Energy: the scandal-hit title sponsor of the Haas Formula One team for some of the 2019 campaign. In case you haven't heard this story before, after being disappointed by Haas's performance, Rich Energy abruptly ended the partnership less than half way through the 2019 season, announcing the news on its twitter page. Storey then compared the team's race car to a 'milk float' in an interview, however, as we understand it, he was removed as CEO of Rich Energy shortly after the debarcel. Haas also reportedly sought £35million in damages from the company. Back to the present, Storey has called the announcements made by the Marcus Motor Company and its owner Howard Nash 'misleading', posting on Linkedin that 'to be absolutely clear: Marcos Cars Limited is the legal owner of the Marcos brand. Advertisement - Article continues below Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below 'Our new supercar is the only genuine new Marcos vehicle. We are focused on the future of British performance engineering not on rehashing the past.' Mark Carbery, board advisor to Marcus Motor Company, responded to Storey's allegations, saying: 'Marcos Motor Company Ltd owns the original assets of the Marcos brand, dating back to 1959. Body moulds, toolings, jigs, drawings and CAD, production rights, brand rights, trademarks, records of almost every vehicle ever made, the still-trading Marcos Heritage Spares operation, and legacy entities including Marcos Engineering and Marcos Sales. You name it. 'Just a point to clarify. Someone out there is making claims to the brand and its heritage, and of being CEO of an official Marcos enterprise. He's posted to that effect on LinkedIn and on the socials. His enterprise does not have the assets or the rights.' He continued, 'Unfortunately, however, the claims led some people to mistakenly associate him with Marcos Motor Company and our assets. He's not associated with us in any way.' With no less than two possible comebacks apparently on the cards, the Marcos saga will no doubt continue. Stay tuned to see how it develops. Want the latest car news in your inbox? Philippines V-P Duterte must go on trial due to severity of charges, prosecutors say

Philippine Vice-President Sara Duterte is facing removal from her post and a lifetime ban from office if convicted. PHOTO: REUTERS Philippines V-P Duterte must go on trial due to severity of charges, prosecutors say MANILA - Philippine Vice-President Sara Duterte must be tried, and ultimately convicted, over serious charges, including an alleged threat to have the president killed, prosecutors argued in a submission to a Senate impeachment court on June 27. Ms Duterte is facing removal from her post and a lifetime ban from office if convicted. She has denied wrongdoing and maintains her impeachment is politically motivated and the result of an acrimonious falling out between her and President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. Lower House prosecutors said the weight of the evidence against Ms Duterte justifies a full-blown trial, rejecting her defence that the allegations against her in an impeachment complaint were unsubstantiated. 'The severity of the charges leaves no room for technical evasion. A trial is not only warranted but necessary to reinforce justice, uphold democratic principles, and affirm that no individual, regardless of rank of influence, stands above the law,' they said in their response to Ms Duterte's defence. 'It is obvious from a simple reading of (Ms Duterte's response), which relies on misleading claims and baseless procedural objections, that the only legal strategy of the defence is to have the case dismissed and avoid trial,' the prosecutors said. Ms Duterte, who was impeached by the Lower House in February, has described the impeachment complaint as unconstitutional and 'nothing more than a scrap of paper.' Included in the complaint were allegations that she misused public funds while vice-president and education secretary and had plotted to assassinate Mr Marcos, the First Lady and the House Speaker based on remarks during a November press conference about hiring an assassin. Ms Duterte's impeachment is widely seen in the Philippines as part of a broader power struggle ahead of the 2028 election, which Mr Marcos cannot contest due to a single-term limit for presidents and will likely seek to groom a successor to protect his legacy. Mr Marcos has distanced himself from the impeachment. Ms Duterte, the daughter of former President Rodrigo Duterte, is expected to run for the presidency in 2028 if she survives the impeachment and would be a strong contender. Palace hits VP Sara for saying she doesn't favor any country

Malacañang on Friday criticized Vice President Sara Duterte for saying she does not favor any country at all. This developed after Duterte recently shrugged off allegations that her family is pro-China as she also questioned the Marcos administration's foreign policy. Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Atty. Claire Castro on Friday reiterated that President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr., for his part, is pro-Philippines. Castro stressed that Marcos has promised that "he will not yield even an inch of our territory." "Ang tunay na Pilipino, umaawit ng Lupang Hinirang na may dangal. Sinasambit ang mga katagang, 'Ang mamatay nang dahil sa 'yo.' Sabi nga po ni Dr. Jose Rizal, 'Ang hindi marunong magmahal sa sariling wika ay masahol pa sa hayop at malansang isda,"' Castro said when asked about Duterte's recent statements. (A true Filipino sings Lupang Hinirang with dignity. They recite the words, 'To die because of you.' Dr. Jose Rizal even said, 'Those who do not learn to love his or her own language are worse than animals or slimy fish.') "Paano pa kaya ang isang Pilipino at isang lider na umaming hindi mahal ang kaniyang sariling bansa, ano kaya ang kanilang amoy? Iyon lang po," she added. (How about a Filipino and a leader who admitted that she doesn't love his or her country. What's the smell of this person? That's all.) GMA News Online asked Duterte's camp for comment on the matter, but it has yet to reply as of posting time. Last Wednesday, the Vice President expressed frustration with the state of the Philippines under Marcos, saying she gets embarrassed as a Filipino thinking that other countries are seeing its debacle. She said, "Matagal na nilang narrative na pro-China ako. I am not pro any country at all. Ang sinasabi ko lagi, we need to develop, we need to maintain, and we need to level up our relations with all countries, hindi lang sa China." (They've been using that 'I am pro-China' narrative for a long time now. I am not pro any country at all. What I always say is that we need to develop, we need to maintain, and we need to level up our relations with all countries, not just China.) Castro had said that Marcos already expected her criticisms on how the government is handling the territorial dispute in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) as the Dutertes are pro-China. — VDV, GMA Integrated News
