Missing teen surfer miraculously found on remote island after vanishing at sea

Darcy Deefholts, 19, sparked a desperate search after he failed to return from a Wednesday afternoon surf at One Tree Beach, near the quiet coastal town of Wooli. As daylight faded and fears grew, Darcy's father turned to social media in a heartbreaking plea for help. In a desperate plea to find his son, concerned parent Terry Deefholts wrote: 'HELP – I NEED BOATS, BEACH WALKERS, DRONES, 4WDs and PLANES AT FIRST LIGHT. Marine Rescue teams scoured the coastline from Bare Point to Pebbly Beach, but the search was suspended overnight, leaving a sleepless family clinging to hope. But in an astonishing twist of fate, Darcy was discovered alive the following morning on North Solitary Island, a desolate spit of land just over eight miles offshore. It was something his father described as a "one-in-a-million miracle." He added: "I haven't even spoken to him yet… I'm just so over the moon. I can't even begin to fathom how he survived. It's just a lot to process." Just hours before his son was found, Terry had begged boat owners to search nearby islands and even feared the worst but refused to give up, the NY Post reports. Taking to social media, he posted: 'Boats – need one to go straight to North West Solitary Island." But it was North Solitary where young Darcy would ultimately be found, battered but alive. His original post has since been shared more than 1,100 times, with strangers from across the state offering boats, drones, and even planes to aid the search. Thousands became invested in the post and prayed for a positive outcome. Updating them on the search, Terry wrote: 'We are overwhelmed by the community efforts. There is only one thing we want now – our beloved boy to be found safe.' NSW Police confirmed Darcy had left his Wooli home by bicycle at around 2.30pm on Wednesday and hadn't been seen since, sparking urgent concern due to the out-of-character disappearance. Darcy was described as slim, 180cm tall, with black hair and a quiet nature. Marine Rescue NSW swung into action late Wednesday, deploying rescue vessel Wooli 30 in a last-light search, which resumed early Thursday with help from Coffs Harbour crews. Inspector John Murray commented: 'The volunteer crews will conduct search patterns under the direction of Marine Area Command."

Shocking moment man tries to climb onto cruise ship using mooring ropes and is arrested
A 29-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly trying to climb onboard a cruise ship via its mooring ropes in Sydney, Australia. New South Wales Police Force reportedly took the unnamed man into custody following the incident. It occurred at the Overseas Passenger Terminal in Sydney's Rocks suburb on Saturday May 17. Video shows the man swinging on the ropes as he allegedly attempts to board the ship. He was later picked up in a NSW police boat and taken to the local police station. The man has reportedly been charged with three offences including entering a cleared zone when not screened and entering land-side and water-side restricted areas without authorisation. He is now on bail but is scheduled to appear at Sydney's Downing Centre Local Court on June 11. A police statement at the time said: 'At about 2:55pm today (Saturday 17 May 2025) police were called to a boat terminal at The Rocks, following reports a man had attempted to climb onto a cruise ship via a mooring line. 'On arrival, police attached to Marine Area Command found the man suspended over the water from the mooring line.' In two videos posted by TikTok user @ the man appears to be swinging from the ropes. He then appears to be pulled into the waiting police boat after he descends from the ropes. The man appears to be wearing a slider-type shoe as he scales the ship's ropes.

Police said a multi-agency search and rescue was launched shortly after. 'Police with assistance from Marine Area Command, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, and Surf Life Saving NSW, have commenced a multi-agency search to locate the woman. 'She is described as being of Caucasian appearance, of thin build, with light brown shoulder-length hair in a ponytail, and was wearing cream-coloured shorts.' Anyone with information about the whereabouts of the woman, or anyone who matches the woman's description at Pottsville Beach, is urged to contact police.

Six killed as huge waves crash onto Australia's east coast
The death toll from drowning incidents caused by giant waves battering Australia's east coast has risen to six. A fisherman who was swept off the rocky shore was pulled from the sea but could not be revived, New South Wales Police said on Sunday. Since Friday, Australia's east coast has been battered by giant waves triggered by Cyclone Tam. In New South Wales, five people have drowned and another remains missing. One person has also reportedly drowned in the state of Victoria, according to local reports. The Australian weather bureau had warned that large waves could batter the coasts of New South Wales and southern Queensland from Thursday through Saturday, with conditions expected to ease on Sunday. Some parts of New South Wales may continue to experience strong winds until midnight on Monday, the bureau said. 'Hazardous Surf Warnings are in place, highlighting that conditions could be dangerous for coastal activities like swimming, boating and rock fishing,' it said in a post on X on Friday. Rescue teams — including local police, the Marine Area Command, and non-profit organisations such as Surf Life Saving NSW — have been working to save those swept into the sea, as well as to recover and identify the bodies of those who drowned. Several people, including a 14-year-old boy, have been pulled from the water and admitted to hospital, NSW Police said. Volunteer lifesavers and ocean lifeguards have carried out more than 150 rescues since Good Friday, according to Surf Life Saving NSW chief Steven Pearce. 'It would be the worst Easter drowning toll that we have seen in New South Wales on our record,' Mr Pearce told ABC News. 'Just the combination of hot temperatures, a long weekend, hundreds of thousands of people going to the coastline and an enormous swell that has impacted the coastline up and down,' he said. Police have urged witnesses to come forward with information about the circumstances surrounding the drowning incidents. 'Large and powerful surf conditions are expected to be hazardous for coastal activities such as crossing bars by boat and rock fishing,' NSW police said in a post on X. 'If on the water in general, a reminder to wear a lifejacket and have all safety equipment. Check local weather and if in doubt, don't go!' the police force warned.
