HFD shares summer safety tips ahead of July 4th holiday

Open liquor on boat nets man suspension on road
A marine officer is watching boaters from the OPP patrol boat's bow. (Source: OPP) Hosting compliance for lifejackets and safety equipment on boats, the Collingwood & Blue Mountains Ontario Provincial Police Marine Unit pulled over a personal watercraft Monday at 3:30 p.m. When using a personal watercraft or Jet-ski-type boat on the Nottawasaga River in Wasaga Beach, police spotted open liquor onboard. The 37-year-old man was arrested and taken to the station where his impairment level was determined to be twice the legal limit. The Wasaga Beach man was charged with: Adult operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus) Adult operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs Adult having care or control of a boat underway with open container of liquor The Wasaga Beach man is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Collingwood on July 15 to answer to the charges. Boat operators who are charged with impaired driving offences get an immediate 90-day driver's license suspension as well.

Hanlan's Beach is getting a bubble zone to keep away motorized boats and vehicles
Toronto police's marine unit will create a bubble zone around Hanlan's Beach as a pilot project this summer to improve safety for swimmers, kayakers and paddleboarders. The "motorized watercraft exclusion zone" will extend 200 metres off the shoreline of Hanlan's Beach, the marine unit said in a news release on Friday. The pilot project is being introduced with the help of the city and Ports Toronto, the marine unit added. All motorized vessels, including personal watercrafts such as Sea-Doos and Jet Skis, powerboats and sailboats, will be banned from entering the designated area. The marine unit says "clearly marked buoys" will be set out on Monday to make the boundaries of the zone clear and marine unit officers will patrol regularly to ensure there is compliance, using education, safety checks and enforcement when necessary. "The Toronto Police Service Marine Unit remains committed to the safety and security of our waterways and beaches," the marine unit said in the release. As well, a 400-metre "quiet zone" is in effect along Hanlan's Beach, which means boaters must keep music and amplified sound at reasonable levels, the marine unit said. "Sound travels further on water, and this measure is intended to preserve the enjoyment of all beach and water users," the marine unit said. According to the marine unit, the exclusion zone is supported by the Canada Marine Act and will be formally listed in the PortsToronto Rules and Procedures, Port Authority Regulations.

2 killed in Kawartha Lakes boating accident: OPP
Two men are dead following a boating accident on Sturgeon lake on June 8. (OPP photo) Two men are dead following a boating accident in the Kawartha Lakes region on Sunday afternoon. The incident happened on Sturgeon Lake, which is roughly 155 kilometres northeast of Toronto. Emergency responders were called to that area shortly after 3 p.m. after receiving reports of a canoe carrying three males that had capsized. In a news release, the OPP's Kawartha Lakes Detachment said one of the males was able to make his way to the shore, however two others were 'unable to remain afloat and succumbed to their injuries.' They added that there were no life jackets in the boat. The local OPP, including its Marine Unit, along with City of Kawartha Lakes Fire and EMS, and the OPP's Aviation team were involved in the lifesaving and recovery efforts. 'With capsized vessels and falling overboard the top contributing factors in boating deaths every year, a significant number of lives stand to be saved if boaters, personal watercraft users and paddlers wore a lifejacket or personal floatation device,' said the OPP, which patrols more than 110,000 square kilometres of Ontario's waterways.
