'Help me find my missing son's body so I can bury him at home'
Distraught mum Galina is making a heartfelt plea for her son Maris Ile's location so he can be laid to rest on home soil in Latvia alongside his deceased father The mum of a missing man believed to have been murdered has begged for information on her son's whereabouts so he can be buried on home soil. The mother of Maris Ile, 54, has launched a public appeal for information to help find out what happened to her son after he was last seen in November 2024. Maris, a Latvian national, was living in King's Lynn, Norfolk and was in regular contact with his family in Latvia. In March, Norfolk Police launched a no-body murder investigation as enquiries led them to believe that Maris has come to harm. Mum Galina said: "I am begging, if you know something, if you've seen Maris please report it to police." "This is very important to me. If he is no longer alive, then I would like the police to find his body, so he can be cremated and brought back home to Latvia so he could rest on Latvian soil. "So that he could be buried with his father in the cemetery. I would be very grateful if you provide any information to police who are searching for him." Four men and a woman were arrested at addresses in King's Lynn, Norwich and Peterborough on suspicion of murder in connection with Maris' disappearance. All five remain on police bail until September 11, 2025. Forensic tents were observed at the North Lynn allotments during the suspects' arrests as part of the investigation, but they are not thought to have yielded any new leads. While partial human remains were discovered in Walton Highway in May, it has since been confirmed that these did not belong to Maris. Instead, the remains were identified as those of a man in his 30s. Anyone with information about Maris' disappearance who has not yet come forward is urged to contact the Major Investigation Team (MIT) by calling the police non-emergency number 101 and quoting crime reference 36/11508/25. Alternatively, people can submit tips via Norfolk Constabulary's online portal.

Thais part of Asean peace talk team
Thai officials will be part of an Asean delegation discussing peace with Myanmar's junta government in the capital, Nay Pyi Taw, next month, Foreign Affairs Minister Maris Sangiampongsa said on Wednesday. Speaking after attending the 58th Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting and related events in Kuala Lumpur from July 8–11, Mr Maris confirmed Thailand's commitment to Asean's peace initiative. During an informal meeting focused on the Myanmar crisis on Wednesday, Asean foreign ministers reaffirmed their support for Asean's Five-Point Consensus as the framework for addressing the situation, he said. Mr Maris noted that Malaysia, this year's Asean chair, emphasised the urgent need for a ceasefire with rebel forces around the country as a prerequisite for delivering humanitarian assistance. "Asean wants to see Myanmar become politically stable and safe for its people," he said. The meeting endorsed a plan for the foreign ministers of Malaysia, the Philippines (the incoming Asean chair), and Thailand to visit Nay Pyi Taw for talks with the Myanmar military authorities, he said. The goal, Mr Maris said, is to stress the importance of peacebuilding and inclusive humanitarian support. He also proposed that Asean's humanitarian mission, initiated after the earthquake in Myanmar in March, must be continued and expanded to ensure aid reaches all people in need. To achieve a sustainable resolution to the crisis, Mr Maris called for inclusive dialogue involving all relevant stakeholders in Myanmar. "As Myanmar's closest neighbour, Thailand is ready to facilitate dialogue among all sides and support a 'Myanmar-led, Myanmar-owned' solution," he said. "There is no point in Asean telling Myanmar what to do without the participation of all those involved in the crisis."

ASEAN must tackle global challenges together
BANGKOK: ASEAN must work together to boost intra-regional trade and deepen cooperation to navigate an increasingly complex global political and economic landscape, said Thailand's Foreign Minister, Maris Sangiampongsa. Alongside intergovernmental collaboration, he said the private sector also plays a crucial role in overcoming these challenges. 'Amidst a complex global political and economic landscape, I stressed that ASEAN must work together to confront these challenges, particularly by strengthening intra-ASEAN trade, as we represent a combined market of nearly 700 million people,' he posted on his official X account on Thursday. He added that ASEAN members should work together to enhance collaboration among the region's business communities. Maris is currently in Kuala Lumpur for the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) and related meetings, including the AMM Plenary Session and Retreat Session, which began on Tuesday. During the Plenary Session, Maris said ASEAN members exchanged views on strengthening and fostering a more cohesive ASEAN Community. 'I also emphasised the growing threat of transnational crimes in our region, particularly online scams, which undermine ASEAN's community-building efforts. In this regard, I called for stronger regional cooperation to tackle these threats effectively,' he said. At the Retreat Session, Maris said discussions focused on reinforcing ASEAN unity, including pursuing a collective ASEAN approach to the situation in Myanmar. 'The meeting recognised the importance of achieving a ceasefire in Myanmar, as well as organising a joint visit by the Foreign Ministers of Malaysia, as the current ASEAN Chair, along with Indonesia and the Philippines, as incoming Chairs, in the coming months to explore ways to facilitate humanitarian assistance,' he added. Meanwhile, the Thai Foreign Minister also held a bilateral meeting with Norway's State Secretary, Andreas Kravik. Maris said the discussion focused on deepening bilateral cooperation, particularly in trade and investment, including the possibility of Norway's sovereign wealth fund - the largest in the world - investing in Thailand's Land Bridge project. 'Norway is a global leader in the green transition, from which Thailand can learn and adapt in order to help the Thai private sector move towards carbon neutrality,' he said. The 58th AMM and related meetings, held under Malaysia's ASEAN Chairmanship for 2025 with the theme 'Inclusivity and Sustainability', comprise 24 ministerial-level meetings involving ASEAN Dialogue Partners and Sectoral Dialogue Partners. – Bernama

Watch: Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu achieves MLB feat not seen in almost 67 years
July 1 (UPI) -- Boston Red Sox right fielder Wilyer Abreu achieved an MLB feat not seen in nearly 67 years in a win over the Cincinnati Reds -- recording an inside-the-park home run with a grand slam in the same game. Abreu delivered the historic performance as part of his team's 13-6 triumph Monday in Boston. He went 2 for 5 with five RBIs and two runs scored. Advertisement "I was very excited, but at the same time I was very tired," Abreu said on the NESN broadcast. With his first career grand slam, Abreu became the first MLB player since Roger Maris to hit the two types of home run in the same game. Maris accomplished it while playing for the Kansas City Athletics in a 12-0 win over the Washington Senators on Aug. 3, 1958, in Kansas City, Mo. The Red Sox scored seven times in the first inning and carried that advantage into the top of the fourth at Fenway Park. They then allowed the Reds to score four times to trim the deficit. Abreu came to the plate to lead off the bottom of the fifth after the Reds scored their fourth run. The Red Sox outfielder fell behind 0-2 in the count against starting pitcher Joe La Sorsa. The left-handed pitcher finished the exchange by issuing a 93.4-mph fastball up in the zone. Advertisement Abreu chopped at the middle-of-the-plate offering, smashing the pitch 104.2 mph toward the 420 sign in right center field. The ball drilled the top of a short fence and caromed left. Reds outfielder T.J. Friedl slipped in the warning track dirt, allowing the ball to trickle further out of reach. Abreu flew around the bases as the Reds struggled to gain possession and finished the play with a headfirst slide into home for the Red Sox's eighth run. Reds designated hitter Austin Hays answered with a 414-foot solo homer in the next half-inning, but the Red Sox replied with five more runs down the stretch. Outfielder Jarren Duran clubbed a 373-foot solo homer just inside the right field foul pole in the bottom of the sixth. The Red Sox then loaded the bases for Abreu in the bottom of the eighth. The Red Sox outfielder hit the first pitch he saw from Reds relief pitcher Connor Phillips to right field for a 407-foot grand slam. Second baseman Matt McClain hit an RBI single for the final run in the top of the ninth, but the Reds could not overcome the massive deficit. Advertisement Abreu became the sixth player overall to record a grand slam and inside-the-park home run, joining Jim Tabor, Charlie Gehringer, Everett Scott and Jocko Fields, in addition to Maris. His inside-the-park homer was also the first for a Red Sox player since Eduardo Nunez accomplished the feat in 2018. It was the first grand slam by a Red Sox player at Fenway Park since Jacoby Ellsbury in 2011. Abreu, a Glove Glove-wining outfielder, hit .256 with 16 home runs and 45 RBIs through his first 74 appearances this season. Shortstop Trevor Story, third baseman Marcelo Mayer, catcher Carlos Narvaez and designated hitter Roman Anthony joined Abreu as the Red Sox players who collected two hits apiece Monday. Story went 2 for 4 with a three-run homer, a walk and a run scored. Red Sox starter Garrett Crochet allowed seven hits and five runs, including four earned, over six innings, but still earned his eighth win of the season. Advertisement Reds starter Chase Burns allowed five hits and seven runs, including five earned, over just one-third of an inning to drop to 0-1 this season. McClain and Hays were the only Reds players to record multiple hits. McClain went 3 for 5 with two RBIs, a run scored and a strikeout. Hays went 2 for 4 with a home run, triple, three RBIs, two runs scored and a strikeout. The Red Sox (42-44) will host the Reds (44-41) in the second game of the series at 7:10 p.m. EDT Tuesday at Fenway Park.
