'Back to Black' Marisa Abela Joins Chad Stahelski's 'Highlander' Reboot With Henry Cavill

Chad Stahelski's Highlander reboot has added Back to Black star Marisa Abela to its star-studded cast that includes the previously announced Henry Cavill ( Man of Steel, The Witcher ) and Russell Crowe ( The Exorcism , Gladiator ). Photo credit: John Nacion / Getty Images Based on the original Highlander (1986), the new film will be produced by United Artists' (UA) Scott Stuber and Nick Nesbitt, and made for Amazon MGM Studios. 87Eleven Entertainment, Stahelski's production banner, Josh Davis of Davis Panzer Productions, as well as Louise Rosner will also be producing the movie. Michael Finch, who has previously worked on Hitman: Agent 47 (2015) and John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023), will be writing the screenplay. Given that UA has secured the full rights to the 1986 cult classic, there is the potential to develop the new film into a full-blown series, though it remains to be seen whether they will remain true to the source material. Sean Connery and Christopher Lambert in 'Highlander' (1986) The original Highlander (1986) starred Christopher Lambert ( Mortal Kombat , Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance ) in the titular role of the Scottish Highlander, Connor MacLeod, with Sean Connery ( James Bond films) starring opposite him as MacLeod's mentor, Juan Ramirez. The epic wove through past and present-day settings as immortal warriors engaged in a timeless battle to be the last man standing and claim the ultimate Prize. Receiving widespread popularity upon release, the film later spawned sequels, a TV series and gained a cult following. While Cavill has been cast to portray MacLeod and Crowe to portray Ramirez, Abela's role has been described as a new character, a fellow immortal and former love of Cavill's MacLeod. Photo credit: PA WIre Abela has had a couple of recent critically acclaimed roles, including her role as Amy Winehouse in the biographical drama Back to Black (2024), that gained her a nomination for a BAFTA EE Rising Star Award, as well as her role in the banking drama Industry (2020-present) that won her a 2025 BAFTA TV Award. She also had a stellar performance in Steven Soderbergh's Black Bag (2025), stealing scenes from the likes of Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett. Though Highlander will undoubtedly be Abela's biggest onscreen role yet, with her repertoire of widely lauded roles, Cavill and Crowe may have some competition to be 'the only one' to watch in the upcoming Highlander film. Marisa Abela calls it ‘a real honour' to be cast in the upcoming reboot of Highlander

Marisa Abela has said it is 'a real honour to step into such a legacy' after being cast in the upcoming reboot of Highlander, which also stars Henry Cavill and Russell Crowe. The 28-year-old actress, who recently won a 2025 BAFTA TV Award for her role in the BBC series Industry, is joining the new iteration of the 1986 cult fantasy film, which will be directed by Chad Stahelski. The project is being developed by Amazon MGM Studios and United Artists, with a theatrical release planned. The reboot of Highlander, first announced in 2021, is being spearheaded by former Netflix film chief Scott Stuber, 55, who now oversees United Artists. Michael Finch is writing the screenplay, which is based on the original film by director Russell Mulcahy. That film starred Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery as immortal warriors locked in a centuries-long battle across time. Scott Stuber and Nick Nesbitt will produce the new film on behalf of UA, alongside Neal H. Moritz, 64, Stahelski's production company 87Eleven Entertainment, Josh Davis of Davis Panzer Productions, and Louise Rosner. United Artists has secured full rights to the 1986 film and may also develop a new television series, expanding on a franchise that previously included several sequels and a long-running TV adaptation. The original Highlander was produced by Peter S Davis and William N Panzer and has built a devoted fanbase since its release. Marisa said: 'It's a real honour to step into such a legacy, and I'm looking forward to working with Henry and Russell on something this iconic.' The actress most recently appeared opposite Michael Fassbender, 47, and Cate Blanchett, 55, in Steven Soderbergh's espionage thriller Black Bag. She also received a BAFTA EE Rising Star Award nomination for her portrayal of Amy Winehouse in the 2024 biopic Back to Black. Chad Stahelski, 55, best known for his work on the John Wick franchise, will direct the film. He said earlier this year that Highlander 'has always been a project close to my heart'. Marisa is represented by The Artists Partnership, WME Entertainment, Shelter PR, and Sloane, Offer, Weber and Dern. A spokesperson for Amazon MGM Studios declined to comment on the casting.

NewJeans' Danielle Marsh stars in a campaign for the new Omega Aqua Terra collection

K-pop idol Danielle Marsh of NewJeans is one of the faces of a new campaign by Omega promoting its new Seamaster Aqua Terra collection. The Australian-South Korean singer stars in the campaign alongside rising actress Marisa Abela, Academy Award-winning actress Ariana DeBose, Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Tems, model and entrepreneur Ashley Graham and Sunday Rose Kidman Urban, a new face in modelling and the daughter of actress Nicole Kidman. The campaign, titled What's Your Secret, highlights the Aqua Terra in a new, smaller size of 30mm. These include five stainless steel models with polished and brushed bracelets, one model in 18K Sedna Gold and three references in 18K Moonshine Gold, available in their pure form or in a choice of three two-tone gold combinations with stainless steel. Dial options include deep blue, deep purple, vibrant green, cool black, warm brown as well as mother-of-pearl options. Abela, 28, said of her role: 'Elizabeth Bennet is one of the most fiercely intelligent and iconic characters in literature, and stepping into her shoes has been an incredible honour. 'What I love about this adaptation is how it lets us hear her inner world in such a vivid, intimate way — it feels both timeless and fresh. The audiobook will also star Will Poulter as Mr Wickham, Jessie Buckley as Caroline Bingley and Bill Nighy as Mr Bennet. Dickinson, 28, added: 'Playing Mr Darcy was an amazing experience. The rest of the cast includes Glenn Close, who will be taking on the role of Lady Catherine De Bourgh, Marianne Jean-Baptiste as Mrs Bennet and David Gyasi as Mr Gardiner. Pride And Prejudice will be released in English, Castilian Spanish, French, German, Italian, and Brazilian Portuguese, with each version featuring a local cast. Aurelie de Troyer, head of regional content for Europe at Audible, said: 'It's remarkable how Pride And Prejudice has stood the test of time globally to be one of every generation's favourite love stories. 'Lulu Raczka's script is thrilling and conveys all of Jane Austen's energy in an engaging, modern way. Arguably the best known of these is the 1995 BBC TV version starring Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth. A 2005 film adaptation starred Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen. In April, Netflix announced that Olivia Colman, Emma Corrin and Jack Lowden would star in a Pride And Prejudice series on the streaming platform.
