First Image From HBO's 'Harry Potter' Series Teases Return to Hogwarts

First Image From HBO's 'Harry Potter' Series Teases Return to Hogwarts originally appeared on Parade. HBO has unveiled the first official image from its highly anticipated Harry Potter television series. Production on the new HBO Original series is now underway at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the U.K., the same studio that housed much of the original film franchise. The series is set to debut in 2027 on HBO and HBO Max. The newly released image doesn't give away much in terms of plot, but it does show a glowing Hogwarts crest and the iconic castle silhouetted behind a golden haze. For longtime fans, it's a magical signal that the reboot is very real and very much happening. The lead roles of Harry, Ron, and Hermione will be played by Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stout, and Arabella Stanton, respectively. The latest round of casting includes Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom, Amos Kitson as Dudley Dursley, Louise Brealey as Madam Hooch, and Anton Lesser as wandmaker Garrick Ollivander. The series has also assembled an impressive creative team. Succession alum Francesca Gardiner serves as writer and executive producer, while Game of Thrones and The Menu director Mark Mylod is on board to executive produce and helm multiple episodes. Also joining the production are Oscar-winning cinematographer Adriano Goldman, creature effects designer John Nolan (Westworld), and Emmy-winning costume designer Holly Waddington (Poor Things). The series will be produced by HBO in association with Brontë Film and TV, and Warner Bros. Television. J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, and Ruth Kenley-Letts will executive produce on behalf of Brontë, with longtime Harry Potter producer David Heyman also returning via Heyday Films. HBO has previously described the reboot as a 'faithful adaptation' of Rowling's seven books, with each season expected to cover one installment in the series. The show will exist independently from the original film franchise. The magic is certainly brewing! HBO unveils first look at Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter as filming begins in the UK

HBO has released the first official image from its much-anticipated television adaptation of Harry Potter, marking the beginning of production at Warner Bros Studios Leavesden in the United Kingdom. The image introduces Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, the 11-year-old actor stepping into the iconic role first made famous by Daniel Radcliffe. McLaughlin will be joined by Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, forming the new generation of Hogwarts' beloved trio. The young actors were selected following an extensive casting search of British children aged 9 to 11. 'The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold, and we cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen,' said executive producers Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod, who introduced the trio in May. They also added, 'We would like to thank all the tens of thousands of children who auditioned. It's been a real pleasure to discover the plethora of young talent out there.' Additional cast announcements include Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom, Amos Kitson as Dudley Dursley, Louise Brealey as Madam Hooch, and Anton Lesser as wandmaker Garrick Ollivander. The series is described as a 'faithful adaptation' of J.K. Rowling's bestselling novels, with one season dedicated to each book. According to HBO, the show promises to be 'full of the fantastic detail, much-loved characters and dramatic locations that Harry Potter fans have loved for over 25 years.' The ensemble also features John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid. Other cast members include Luke Thallon as Professor Quirrell, Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch, Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy, Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy, Bel Powley as Petunia Dursley, Daniel Rigby as Vernon Dursley, and Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley. The series is being executive-produced by J.K. Rowling, with Francesca Gardiner also serving as writer. Mark Mylod, best known for his work on 'Succession', is among the directors attached to the project. HBO's Harry Potter is slated to premiere in 2027—exactly 30 years after the publication of 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone' and 16 years after the release of the final instalment in the original film franchise.

J.K. Rowling Raves About HBO's ‘Harry Potter' Series After Working ‘Closely' With the Writers: ‘I've Read the First Two Episodes. They Are So, So Good'

With HBO's 'Harry Potter' series nearing a production start date, J.K. Rowling has taken to X to give the series her full-blown support. She confirmed that she's 'worked closely with the extremely talented writers' on the show, although she will not be getting any writing credits herself like she has on the 'Fantastic Beasts' movies. 'I read the first two episodes of the forthcoming HBO 'Harry Potter' series and they are SO, SO, SO GOOD!' Rowling also posted. Games Restructures Development Into 'Game of Thrones,' Harry Potter, 'Mortal Kombat' and DC Universe Divisions HBO made it clear from the beginning that Rowling would be involved in some capacity with bringing her iconic literary series back to life on screen, this time as a television series, where each book is set to cover one season of TV. Network CEO Casey Bloys previously told reporters that Rowling was 'very, very involved in the process' of selecting showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director Mark Mylod to lead the charge on the 'Harry Potter' TV series. Rowling has courted controversy since 2020 for regularly sharing beliefs on social media that many believe are transphobic. The author also uses platforms like X to regularly troll her critics and take aim at public figures (such as slamming John Oliver's comments on trans athletes). Both HBO and the new 'Harry Potter' cast have received backlash for getting into business with Rowling due to her anti-trans posts. Bloys has said that Rowling's anti-trans statements 'haven't affected the casting or hiring of writers or production staff' for the show. He appeared on 'The Town' podcast in May and stressed to 'Harry Potter' fans that the network's upcoming series will not be 'infused' with Rowling's controversial views on the transgender community. 'The decision to be in business with J.K. Rowling is not new for us. We've been in business for 25 years,' Bloys said. 'We already have a show on HBO from her called 'C.B. Strike' that we do with the BBC. It's pretty clear that those are her personal, political views. She's entitled to them. 'Harry Potter' is not secretly being infused with anything. And if you want to debate her, you can go on Twitter.' Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton and Alastair Stout are headlining HBO's 'Harry Potter' series as Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley. The supporting cast will feature John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, among others. Rowling made headlines in May for saying she wouldn't fire Essiedu after he signed an open letter condemning the U.K. Supreme Court for ruling that transgender women are not legally considered women and transgender men are not legally considered men. 'I don't have the power to sack an actor from the series and I wouldn't exercise it if I did,' Rowling wrote on X while sharing an article about Essiedu. 'I don't believe in taking away people's jobs or livelihoods because they hold legally protected beliefs that differ from mine.' The 'Harry Potter' series is expected to go into production later this year for a premiere sometime in 2026. Harry Potter series price tag unveiled after claims of record breaking budget

Harry Potter is facing a reboot with a brand new cast of actors and it's been reported the series would beat Rings of Power as the most expensive TV show ever to be created HBO has responded to claims the upcoming Harry Potter TV series will be the most expensive television show ever made, following reports suggesting the cost per episode would reach a staggering £75 million. The adaptation of JK Rowling's book series is set to be a decade-long project, with each season dedicated to one of the seven novels. Reports originally published by The Express claimed that the ambitious project would dramatically outspend even Prime Video's The Rings of Power, which cost around $465 million (£399 million) for its first season. However, a source close to the production has now confirmed to that the reported £75 million per episode figure is inaccurate. ‌ ‌ Instead, the budget is expected to be more in line with the final season of Game of Thrones, which cost approximately $15 million (around £12 million) per episode. Even with a more modest budget than reported, the new Harry Potter series is shaping up to be a landmark production. Casting directors received over 30,000 applications from young actors hoping to play the new generation of Hogwarts students. Now, Warner Bros. and HBO have confirmed that Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton, and Alastair Stout will take on the roles of Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley. This also marks the actors' first professional appearances on screen. ‌ Showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director Mark Mylod shared: "After an extraordinary search led by casting directors Lucy Bevan and Emily Brockmann, we are delighted to announce we have found our Harry, Hermione, and Ron. "The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold, and we cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen." ‌ Francesca Gardiner, whose previous credits include His Dark Materials and Killing Eve, is on board as showrunner and writer. She will be joined by Mark Mylod, a veteran director known for his work on Succession and The Last of Us, who will direct multiple episodes. The cast also includes acclaimed actors such as John Lithgow as Professor Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid. The series is scheduled to begin filming this summer and premiere in 2026. It is said to be a faithful adaptation of the books and HBO bosses are hoping to use it to bring the wizarding world to new and existing fans alike. HBO Max will stream the series in various countries, including the UK, Germany, and Italy. Production is already underway, with a £1 billion studio expansion being constructed in Leavesden that includes an on-site school for the show's young stars. Analysts are predicting that this will have a long-term impact on the UK's creative industries. Tom Harrington from Enders Analysis has told The Times: "It's not just the box office, the merchandise, the tourists or the tours arising from the books, but the resurgence of big UK film and TV production that came in the wake of the Potter films."
