Start of Friday's Mets-Pirates delayed due to inclement weather

The start of the series opener between the Mets and the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park was delayed due to inclement weather, including lightning in the area. The Pirates announced a new start time of approximately 7 p.m. Advertisement The Mets enter this series after two straight wins to split their four-game series with the Atlanta Braves. David Peterson (5-3, 2.98 ERA) will look to keep the Mets' winning ways going. In his last start, Peterson was roughed up by the Phillies, allowing five runs over four innings in the loss last Sunday. Friday marks the return of Mark Vientos, who was activated off the IL prior to the game. He's starting at DH and hitting in the No. 6 spot for the Mets. The Pirates are sending Mitch Keller (1-10, 4.02 ERA) to the mound. The veteran right-hander pitched well in his last start -- Saturday vs. the Rangers -- having allowed just two runs on three hits through 5.2 innings, but Keller took the loss.

Griffin Canning placed on the injured list by Mets after surgery to repair ruptured Achilles

PITTSBURGH (AP) — New York Mets pitcher Griffin Canning had surgery on Friday to repair a ruptured left Achilles and will miss the remainder of the season and possibly part of the 2026 season. Canning was injured during Thursday night's 4-0 win over the Atlanta Braves in New York. Signed to a $4.25 million, one-year contract as a free agent in the offseason, the 29-year-old right-hander was 7-3 with a 3.77 ERA in 16 starts as he bolstered an injury-depleted rotation. Third baseman Mark Vientos was reinstated from the 10-day injured list before Friday's series opener at Pittsburgh, left-handed reliever Colin Poche's contract was selected from Triple-A Syracuse and right-hander Blake Tidwell was recalled from Triple-A. Tidwell will take Canning's place in the rotation. Right-hander Austin Warren and infielder Jared Young were optioned to Triple-A. Left-hander Richard Lovelady declined his outright assignment to Triple-A and became a free agent. Outfielder José Azócar accepted his assignment to Syracuse after clearing waivers. ___ AP MLB:

Mets Facing Brett Baty Decision After Roster News on Thursday

Mets Facing Brett Baty Decision After Roster News on Thursday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Mets are just a half-game out of first place despite having a revolving door at third base this season. Veterans Mark Vientos and Brett Baty, as well as prospect Ronny Mauricio, have all had extended time at the position. However, Vientos hasn't played since June 2 due to a hamstring injury. Advertisement The latter player leads the team with 151 at-bats as a third baseman, while Baty has 109 and Mauricio has 39. Vientos is slashing .230/.298/.380 with six homers and 21 RBI over 53 games, Baty .223/.271/.402 with eight homers and 27 RBI over 59, and Mauricio .224/.274/.414 with three homers and five RBI over 17. Manager Carlos Mendoza explained how the team will manage the depth chart with Vientos getting activated on Friday, via SNY. "We got one more [game] tonight, we gotta get through it, and then we have a decision at the end of the day," he continued. New York could stick Vientos at designated hitter going forward, as he has 34 at-bats in that spot as well. However, that would probably be temporary, as Jesse Winker (oblique) will eventually return too. He's taken 63 of his 67 at-bats as a designated hitter this season and is slashing .239/.321/.418 with one homer and 10 RBI. The Mets could have to decide between keeping Baty or Mauricio in the big leagues at some point. Mark Vientos Makes Honest Admission After Mets News

Mark Vientos Makes Honest Admission After Mets News originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Mets have shown recently that although they're just a half-game out of first place, they still need all the help they can get. They're 2-8 in their last 10 contests and have lost three straight series heading into Thursday night's bout with the Atlanta Braves. Advertisement That's why they need third baseman Mark Vientos (hamstring) to be healthy. The 25-year-old who's slashing .230/.298/.380 with six homers and 21 RBI over 53 games this season, hasn't played since June 2. If he gets back to his 2024 form, he could push New York over the top. Vientos slashed .266/.322/.516 over 111 regular season contests before slashing .327/.362/.636 with five homers and 14 RBI over 13 playoff games last year. Mixing that level of production with Juan Soto, Pete Alonso, and Francisco Lindor in the lineup can only mean good things. Vientos revealed how he's feeling before Thursday's game, via SNY. New York Mets third baseman Mark Vientos (27).Steven Bisig-USA TODAY Sports "I feel like there's always a trend with me [starting slow] in first halfs [of the season] throughout my career," the veteran admitted. "It's a good thing that it's a long season, that's why when they say change 162 games I'm the one that says 'no, I want all those games.' Second half is just as big as the first half." Advertisement He also confirmed that he'll be activated on Friday. Right-handed pitcher Griffin Canning (7-3, 3.91 ERA) will start for New York on Thursday against Atlanta right-hander Grant Holmes (4-6 3.71 ERA). The Mets will then start a road series against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday. before hosting the Milwaukee Brewers and New York Yankees.
