Christina Applegate and Katey Sagal recall 'cynical' vibe on 'Married... With Children' set: 'Somebody's gonna talk s--- on you'

The fictional mother-daughter duo debriefed on the 'negativity' on set. With a sitcom as wry as Married... With Children, it's no surprise that the set was just as snarky behind the scenes. Married costars Katey Sagal and Christina Applegate recently spoke about their time working together on Sagal and husband Kurt Sutter's podcast Pie. The Dead to Me actress said she often felt like she didn't belong on the Married set because she wasn't into "sarcasm and s--- talking and negativity." Sagal agreed that there was a "cynical" vibe on set. "We were a sarcastic, cynical bunch," Sagal said. "You weren't safe, really. You turned your back, somebody's gonna talk s--- on you." Applegate recalled a moment when this happened after a scene. She had gone to her dressing room and heard people talking badly about her through a monitor in her trailer. "I was like, 'Wow, I was just there 20 seconds ago,'" she shared. On her own MeSsy podcast, Applegate previously discussed how Sagal was a "safe space" for her in the 11 years Married was on the air. She noted that her TV mom was recently sober when the show began, which was a comfort to Applegate. "You had lived a lot of life and a lot of scarring and things had taken place," Applegate told Sagal. "And now you were on that side of strength. And I needed that. I needed that so badly in my life, a stable person."Married followed the dysfunctional Bundy family including shoe-selling patriarch Al (Ed O'Neill), his lazy wife Peggy (Sagal), teen daughter Kelly (Applegate), and bumbling younger son Bud (David Faustino). Despite the apparent negativity on set, the Married cast has maintained a fond, familial relationship throughout the years. Applegate also had O'Neill on the MeSsy podcast last year and said he practically raised her. 'Years and years of my life spent with this man and he's an incredible actor," she said. "He's an incredible human being.' In 2022, Applegate reunited with Sagal and Faustino when she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. TV dads we still love: Tim Taylor, Phil Dunphy and Gomez Addams

Tim Taylor of the '90s sitcom "Home Improvement" ranks as the top TV dad, according to a survey of Roku users. Why it matters: The ranking highlights how nostalgia and streaming habits shape who we see as iconic dads. Flashback: Television dads were celebrated at last year's Primetime Emmy's. Zoom in: Phil Dunphy ("Modern Family") and Gomez Addams ("The Addams Family") tied for the favorite among users ages 18-34. Al Bundy ("Married ... With Children") was the top choice among the 35-54 age group. Fun fact: Roku found Gomez Addams has the most consistent appeal across generations and genders. The eccentric patriarch has been portrayed in various media since the 1940s and is currently played by Luis Guzmán in the Netflix series "Wednesday." Other small-screen fathers receiving votes in the survey include: Red Forman ("That '70s Show") Homer Simpson ("The Simpsons") Hank Hill ("King of the Hill") Al Bundy ("Married ... With Children") Philip Banks ("The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air") Carl Winslow ("Family Matters") Mike Brady ("The Brady Bunch") Jack Pearson ("This Is Us")

Christina Applegate reveals death in her family that has brought her to 'tears' as she continues MS battle

Christina Applegate has suffered a family loss. The Married... With Children actress - who has been battling the crippling disease MS - revealed on Tuesday that her father Robert 'Bobby' Applegate has died at the age of 82. The 53-year-old Anchorman movie star broke down in tears when she shared the heartbreaking news on her podcast this week. Applegate was talking to fellow MS sufferer Jamie-Lynn Sigler of Sopranos fame on their podcast MeSsy. She told guest JoAnna Garcia Swisher that she was crying because her father passed away about a week before they were recording their podcast session. Christina added that this was the first time she had shed tears over the passing of her dad because she had held it in. The star with her dad when she was a young girl in the 1970s 'We knew he was going to die. Is that an excuse for not feeling?' she asked. 'Because you kind of know that someone's going to go, and you've said your goodbyes,' added the longtime actress. Swisher then said she was very sad when one of her parents died adding it left her in an unusual state. Applegate noticed the first signs of MS after 'falling' on her series Dead To Me. The actress was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2021, but she has recalled filming the pilot episode of the drama - which aired from 2019 to 2022 - which included a scene where her character Jen Harding was running across a field. During an episode of her own 'MeSsy' podcast with Sigler, she told Dead To Me director Liz Feldman: 'I remember falling that day. Hi, first sign of MS! So, not to bring everybody down, but there I was.' Liz recalled: 'I remember you losing your balance when we were shooting the pilot a couple of times. It was very hard to figure it out because, you know, I remember one time, it was really late at night. 'We'd been shooting probably 14 or 15 hours … It seemed completely reasonable that anybody would be collapsing.' Christina confirmed: 'It was MS.' Christina added that this was the first time she had shed tears over the passing of her dad because she had held it in She revealed her diagnosis with the autoimmune disease - which affects the brain and spinal cord (central nervous system) - in 2021. That was before the show finished. The star previously admitted that filming the final season helped her deal with the news. Christina told Kelly Clarkson in December 2022: 'The beauty of Dead to Me is that it gave me almost this weird platform of dealing with it. 'I didn't have to be on all the time and I didn't have to make all the jokes and I could fall apart in a scene,' the actress added. 'And it was, like, me. It was my soul actually falling apart, unfortunately, in front of the world, but it was cathartic in a beautiful way.' She and fellow MS patient Sigler launched their MeSsy podcast, to talk about their lives with the illness. Christina said: 'Just some thoughts. When we hold in feelings of despair we give those feelings incredible power. 'Why Jamie and I have our podcast is to air those feelings. 'Raw, honest and triggering. And by just sharing we free ourselves. Never feel alone. There is always an ear somewhere. Love you.'
