Sabah launches utility corridor to drive strategic infrastructure growth
Abidin (centre), representing the Chief Minister, officiating the launch gimmick for the Sabah Utility Corridor at the Marriott Hotel in Kota Kinabalu on Friday. KOTA KINABALU (July 4): The State Government has taken a bold step to strengthen infrastructure delivery in Sabah with the official launch of the Sabah Utility Corridor (KUS), a strategic initiative aimed at catalysing systemic development across the state. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor said the establishment of KUS is not merely the creation of a new entity, but a strong reflection of the government's commitment to fast-track development, streamline utility coordination and attract fresh investments into Sabah. 'KUS has been mandated to function as a one-stop agency to expedite utility work permit processes and develop a comprehensive state-wide utility asset database,' he said in his keynote address delivered by Datuk Abidin Madingkir, Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, at the official launch at Marriott Hotel on Friday. He noted that this initiative aligns with the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) Development Plan, which prioritises inclusive development and the delivery of services that are efficient, transparent and future-ready. With the integration of digital technology and a unified utility mapping system under KUS, Hajiji said project approvals will be accelerated, overlapping of work can be reduced, and field safety will be enhanced. 'This approach will have a significant impact not just on the smooth execution of government and private sector projects, but also supports Sabah's digitalisation agenda, investment competitiveness and smart city development,' he said. He added that this is a clear example of how public-private sector synergy can yield high-impact solutions for the people. Hajiji also emphasised that improved coordination of utility processes would unlock more areas for development, which in turn would stimulate economic activities and create employment opportunities, particularly in rural areas. 'Projects like this will reinforce industrial logistics and expand access to basic amenities such as electricity, clean water and telecommunications for our rural communities,' he added. Hajiji also called on all staff of KUSSB and Qhazanah Sabah Berhad to carry out their duties with professionalism and unwavering commitment, ensuring the corridor brings real benefits to the people. 'We've laid a solid foundation. Now is the time to execute it with courage and conviction,' he stressed.

'Phenomenal' Glasgow flower shop named best in Scotland
Lavender Blue, in Partick, scooped the prize at the Scottish Independent Retail Awards 2025. The plush awards were hosted at the Marriott Hotel in Glasgow last week, and owner Allie McCann is over the moon to pick up the gong. Allie, 51, opened the shop 15 years ago, she said: "It was just surreal. We had won in previous years for Central Scotland in Glasgow. "But to come top in Scotland, I can't quite get my head around it because it's such a phenomenal accolade." Allie is over the moon to have scooped the award (Image: Colin Mearns) READ MORE: HUGE new mural being painted in Glasgow city centre by well-known artist The award has come at an emotional time for the shop, which is celebrating its 15th year in business this year. Allie, from Kilsyth, explained that the past year has been tough. She said: "We had six weeks' notice to leave our shop in July. "I received a letter dated July 20, 2024, requesting we be out by August 31st. "It was just the most stressful time of my life. "So much so that I ripped and tore my retina, and it bled into the back of my eye and my brain, and I've now had four surgeries on my eye, and I think it was all to do with stress." "So it was just a crazy year, and it just ended like this last night, and I never expected it at all." The shop is bursting with colour (Image: Colin Mearns) When they had to leave their original location, which had been home to the business for 14 years, the florists were lucky to secure a location just up the street. Allie was relieved to stay in the area, as the shop has become 'part of the community'. She explained: "Lavender Blue kind of really belongs to the people of Partick, people associate it as a Partick shop, and it couldn't go anywhere. "The support we've had from people of Partick and local businesses, everybody all the way up the street was all helping us move. "So I couldn't single out one person because everybody on this street, whenever they saw what happened to me, I think everybody felt that they were a bit vulnerable themselves as well. "Everybody is very tight and looks after each other along this way. "So that would be another thing I was kind of heartbroken at thinking I'd have to leave." The shop have put up a sign to celebrate the gong (Image: Colin Mearns) Allie's small team includes Gemma McQuade, Ryma Skeen, and her husband, David, who "works so hard and never gets paid," and her friend, Susan McDonald, who's stepped in to help out when needed. Allie added: "It just feels fantastic because it really was a win, not just for this shop, but also for a kind of testimony to our backstory of having to move and everything. "These girls that have been with me were just phenomenal, and it's you know a testament to everything that we've done in the last 6/7 months and the work that we put in to keeping it going at a time where I could have happily just closed the door and run away." One member of staff who can't go unmentioned is their "social media superstar" LouLou, Allie's 11-year-old French bulldog. Allie explained: "The dog is the star of the shop. She would be so upset if I didn't mention her! "She's got her own following, and people will come into the shop purely for Lou, she's shameless with her attention-seeking." Lavender Blue provides flowers across the city, and you can see their work up and down the high street. One of their high-profile clients is The Ivy on Buchanan Street. You can visit the beautiful blue shop at 77 Hyndland Street, and of course say hello to LouLou when you're there.
