Road repair and coastal reinforcement in Mengabang Telipot-Batu Rakit to finish by October

KUALA NERUS: The persistent issue of coastal erosion caused by strong monsoon waves in Batu Rakit is set to be resolved with the completion of road repair and coastal reinforcement works along the T145 Jalan Mengabang Telipot-Batu Rakit route by early October. Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi confirmed that the 280-metre project, which began in April, has progressed to 72.24 per cent, surpassing the original schedule by 13 days. The RM4.95 million project, funded by the Malaysian Road Records Information System (Marris), is being executed with technical assistance from the Public Works Department (JKR). 'The project has shown commendable progress in both implementation and financial management,' Nanta said after inspecting the repair works in Kampung Tanjung Batu Rakit. He emphasised that the ministry, through JKR, will ensure the project meets quality standards and stays on schedule. The scope of work includes rubble clearing, geotechnical improvements, retaining wall construction, geotextile system installation, sand filling, and soil stabilisation. These measures aim to enhance the infrastructure's durability and safety. Nanta urged residents and road users to cooperate with safety protocols during the remaining construction period. – Bernama

MPP records rise in assessment rate collection, reaffirms commitment to devt

Tan (centre) and others pose for a photo call after the meeting. KUCHING (June 26): The Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) has recorded an increase in assessment rate collection, with RM16 million collected as of June 2025, marking a 58.06 per cent collection rate, up from 57.47 per cent during the same period last year. Chairman Tan Kai, after chairing the MPP full council meeting yesterday, said the increase demonstrates the council's ongoing commitment to enhance revenue collection and community cooperation. 'Arrears collection has also risen by RM189,000 compared to the same period in 2024. 'MPP has implemented several proactive measures, including mobile counters, door-to-door programmes, SMS and email reminders, follow-up calls, and reminder notices,' he said, stressing that assessment rate revenue is crucial for sustaining services and development in Padawan. Payments can be made at all MPP counters, Service Sarawak locations, the Kuching North City Commission (DBKU), the Kuching South City Hall (MBKS), Post Malaysia Bhd, H&L Supermarkets, and online via the Service Sarawak website, S Pay Global app, and PayBills Malaysia website. Ratepayers who have not received their bills are encouraged to update the contact details at MPP or Service Sarawak counters to receive digital copies. During the meeting, Tan also provided updates on infrastructure projects funded through the Malaysian Road Records Information System (Marris). A total of 121 projects under the Special Marris Road allocation, amounting to RM8.2 million, have been approved, with 47.1 per cent completed. Under the Special Marris Drainage allocation, 28 projects worth RM7.8 million were approved, with 32.14 per cent completed. Separately, 133 out of 411 routine maintenance projects across the council's area have been completed. 'The council reaffirms its commitment to transparency, efficiency, and timely project delivery to ensure maximum benefit for the community,' said Tan. He also warned private developers against carrying out earthworks without prior engineering approval, noting that companies must apply for road permits and clearly indicate routes for heavy vehicles, particularly when transporting construction materials. 'Repeated damage to roads caused by heavy vehicles places a burden on public resources due to frequent repairs,' he said. 'Non-compliance with Section 8A of the Sarawak Building Ordinance 1996 and planning regulations may lead to enforcement, including site closure. A non-compliant site was closed just last month as part of such enforcement efforts.' Moreover, MPP is also moving to regularise unauthorised advertisements within its jurisdiction. Tan stressed that all advertisements must follow council guidelines and by-laws to ensure public safety and preserve the townscape. 'Violators may face a compound of RM1,000 under By-law 28 of the Local Authorities (Advertisements) By-laws 2012,' he said, adding that MPP is committed to working closely with business owners to support compliance and guide them through proper licensing procedures. On another matter, MPP will hold a free dog licensing, anti-rabies vaccination, and microchipping programme this Saturday at the Kota Sentosa basketball court parking lot. The first 50 dogs vaccinated, licensed, and registered with the council will receive a RM150 subsidy. assessment rate collection lead MPP Tan Kai

Sarawak to convert over 5,000km disused logging roads into village routes to boost rural access and development

KUCHING, May 23 — The Sarawak government is planning to take over former logging roads, including wooden bridges, that connect settlements in rural areas such as Baleh constituency. Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development Datuk Aidel Lariwoo said the move is to ensure better and more organised road access for residents. 'So far, there are 5,297km of logging roads that connect various rural settlements in the state. 'Of that total, 3,293km are still active logging roads, while 2,004km are no longer in use,' he said in response to a question from Nicholas Kudi Jantai (GPS-Baleh) at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) here today. Aidel said 312.8km of former logging roads have been successfully registered under the Village Roads category through the Malaysian Road Records Information System (Marris). 'The active logging roads stretch over 1,172.60km and unregistered roads remain under the responsibility of logging concession companies,' he explained. He said the state government is working to take over 188km of former logging roads, including the wooden bridges along those routes. He explained registering these former logging roads under Marris would allow the government to secure financial allocations for maintenance. 'This registration also allows the former logging roads to be classified either under State Roads (JRN) or Village Roads (JKPG), depending on their respective criteria and specifications,' he said. He emphasised that this initiative is a strategic move to enhance rural infrastructure and narrow the development gap between urban and interior areas. — The Borneo Post

S'wak taking over former logging roads to improve rural links

State Deputy Infrastructure and Port Development Minister Datuk Aidel Lariwoo addressing the Sarawak Legislative Assembly during question time on Friday (May 23). KUCHING: The Sarawak government plans to take over former logging roads and wooden bridges to improve connectivity to rural settlements, says state Deputy Infrastructure and Port Development Minister Datuk Aidel Lariwoo. He said there was a total of 5,297km of logging roads connecting settlements in rural areas across the state. Of this, 3,293km are still active while 2,004km are no longer in use. "Former logging roads and wooden bridges, which are in urgent need of repair or of high importance, can be considered as proposed projects under the 13th Malaysia Plan," Aidel told Nicholas Kudi (GPS-Baleh) during question time in the Sarawak Legislative Assembly on Friday (May 23). To a supplementary question, he said the state government was registering former logging roads under the Malaysian Road Records Information System (Marris). "This will enable funds to be allocated under Marris for the maintenance of these roads, either as state roads or village roads according to their criteria and specifications," he added.
