Wildfires Shut Marseille Airport, Burn Thousands of Hectares

Israa Farhan Devastating wildfires in southern France and Spain have led to major disruptions and extensive environmental damage, with Marseille Airport forced to shut down and more than 5,000 hectares of land scorched across the region. As extreme summer heat continues to fuel fast-moving blazes, authorities across Europe are on high alert. In southern France, a wildfire erupted near the town of Vitrolles, prompting officials to close Marseille Provence Airport on Tuesday. Thick smoke from the blaze blanketed the city and surrounding areas, resulting in the cancellation of at least 10 flights to destinations including Brussels, Munich, and Naples. Departures and arrivals were suspended from around noon, with some flights diverted to alternative airports in Nice, Nîmes, and other regional hubs. Marseille's airport, the fourth busiest in France, remained closed into the evening as fire crews battled the flames. Despite a rapid response by 600 firefighters and 10 aircraft, including four Canadair water bombers, the fire spread rapidly, driven by strong winds and dry vegetation. Flames reached up to 30 meters high, tearing through pine forests and threatening nearby towns such as Narbonne, Bages, and Peyriac-de-Mer. The Aude department, along with Var and Bouches-du-Rhône, has been placed on maximum alert due to the escalating fire threat. Meanwhile, in Spain, wildfires ravaged around 3,000 hectares of woodland in the Els Ports Natural Park near Paüls, Tarragona. The blaze, which broke out on Monday, intensified under record-breaking temperatures and bone-dry conditions. Spanish authorities urged nearly 18,000 residents in nearby areas to remain indoors to ensure their safety as firefighters battled to contain the spread. Elsewhere in Europe, Germany has also raised its alert level following a massive forest fire in the Saalfeld highlands of Thuringia. The blaze began near the village of Jösselsdorf last Wednesday, consuming 250 hectares of forest and prompting officials to declare a state of emergency. This fire is considered the largest of its kind in Thuringia in over three decades. More than 650 firefighters, supported by technical relief agencies and volunteers, have been involved in the containment efforts. These simultaneous wildfires underscore the growing impact of climate-related extreme weather events across Europe, with rising temperatures, strong winds, and prolonged drought conditions creating a perfect storm for fire outbreaks. Authorities across the continent are warning that the worst may still be ahead as the summer heatwave continues. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks Videos & Features Video: Trending Lifestyle TikToker Valeria Márquez Shot Dead during Live Stream Technology 50-Year Soviet Spacecraft 'Kosmos 482' Crashes into Indian Ocean

Foreign Office warning after 13 people injured in French holiday resort and flights cancelled

Foreign Office warning after 13 people injured in French holiday resort and flights cancelled Brits have been warned to 'be vigilant' A plane in Marseille Provence Airport (Image: Urbanandsport/NurPhoto ) A major wildfire in the French resort city of Marseille has spread to the northern outskirts, with authorities warning that overnight firefighting efforts will be 'critical' in containing the flames. Nine firefighters are among at least 13 people who have been confirmed to be injured so far according to reports. The blaze has forced the closure of a local airport and is sending smoke billowing across miles of sunlit countryside, including near the well-known landmark, Notre-Dame de la Garde. Marseille Aiport is currently closed although the Foreign Office shared that it 'may reopen later' and has reminded travellers that fires are common at this time of year, warning people to 'be vigilant' if they are staying in a high-risk area. ‌ Videos shared on social media show huge plumes of smoke rising from the Marseille forest. Locals helicopters are circling overhead at the airport as part of the emergency response. For our free daily briefing on the biggest issues facing the nation, sign up to the Wales Matters newsletter here ‌ Flights are being rerouted to Nice, another major tourist destination, as fire crews continue to tackle the flames. The outbreak follows a weekend of strong winds that allowed 'nascent fires to spread very quickly.' The Foreign Office currently states: 'Marseille Airport is currently closed due to wildfires in the area. Article continues below 'It may reopen later today, but you should contact your operator for the latest information. 'Wildfires can start anywhere in France during the summer months, particularly along the Mediterranean coast and in Corsica. 'The French weather service have launched a fire alert map for travellers to check.' ‌ The government body also reminds Brits that fires have become more frequent because of drought and high temperatures, noting that French authorities may evacuate areas and close roads for safety reasons. The advice if you're staying in a high-risk area is to check the local safety and emergency procedures be vigilant follow the advice of local authorities ‌ And if you are caught in, or witness, a wildfire call the emergency services on 18 (fire) or 112 (emergency services). See information for property owners about bush clearance which can be mandatory in some areas. France's weather agency, Météo France, had issued prior warnings that conditions could rapidly deteriorate. ‌ In a statement on Monday, they said: 'Hundreds of hectares were ravaged by fires over the weekend. As of Saturday, the danger level was very high locally. 'A very high fire danger level means a risk of fires starting and the potential for these fires to spread very significantly.' Wildfires like the one currently affecting Marseille are becoming more common and more dangerous across France and Europe. ‌ In recent years, unusually hot, dry, and windy weather made worse by climate change has created perfect conditions for fires to start and spread quickly. France had one of its worst wildfire seasons in 2022, with around 75,000 hectares of land burned. In 2023, fires across Europe destroyed over 500,000 hectares which is twice the size of Luxembourg. Article continues below Strong winds, high temperatures, and long droughts are making fire seasons longer and more intense than ever before and many fires are also started by human activity, either by accident or on purpose. If you're in an affected area, the French government's Civil Protection website and local préfectures provide emergency advice, evacuation updates, and safety information.

Wildfire on Edge of Marseille Injures More Than 100, Officials Say

Firefighters battled a fast-moving blaze on the outskirts of France's second-largest city, Marseille, into the early hours of Wednesday, after the wildfire injured more than 100 people and prompted hundreds to evacuate. The blaze was ignited by a car fire in Les Pennes-Mirabeau, a small community about eight miles north of Marseille. Whipped by powerful, erratic winds, the wildfire had spread to about 1,700 acres by late Tuesday, forcing the authorities to temporarily halt flights, suspend trains and close some roads. France's interior minister, Bruno Retailleau, flew to Marseille Tuesday night where he gave a news conference with the mayor and other officials. Mr. Retailleau said that at least 110 people had been injured, including at least 30 firefighters, as well as local and national police. He said it was 'exceptional' that there were no deaths, given the intensity of the fire. Mr. Retailleau said that firefighters would be battling the blaze all night. More than 600 volunteer and professional firefighters were involved, aided by 15 firefighting planes and helicopters, he said. At least 400 people had been ordered to evacuate and 14,000 were told to stay home, he said. The Marseille-Provence Airport suspended flights on Tuesday because of the fire. It is one of France's busiest airports, serving more than 11 million passengers last year. The airport said Tuesday evening that it would reopen at 9:30 p.m., but officials warned that flights could still be affected. The fire erupted after a dayslong heat wave parched parts of Western Europe, turning woodlands into tinderboxes. The French weather agency had warned that there was also a high risk of forest fires elsewhere in the country, given the windy conditions. See temperatures as...
